We were very pleased with Rich Roofing and would definitely use them again.  They replaced our entire roof and replaced our screens.  The company that they used to do our screens did a terrible job.  They are still working with us to get those fixed.  They returned our calls and were very attentive to anything that we called them about.  They did have to re-do a few things and they were great about getting it done.  Everyone in the company itself and in the people they hired to do the various work, were friendly and professional.

The initial contact with the salesman was very good - he was friendly, informative and pleasant and not pushy. He inspected and said the hail and wind damage was moderate and that it was a valid insurance claim. We called our adjustor, who came out and agreed. Rich Roofing offered to deal with our insurance for us, acting in our interest. I was a bit skeptical about doing that but we had heard radio announcements about the company and the BBB listed them as A+  I also liked the idea of dealing with a local, long term reputable company who used local employees who were background checked. The salesman assured us that all the employees had been with Rich Roofing for at least ten years. He assured us that he would be available for questions from start to finish so that we would receive quality work and good communication. That is what ultimately sold me...We agreed to use them and signed the contract. I later learned that the original Rich Roofing of Troy, Ohio was bought out last year right after the big Kettering hail and wind storm. I learned this by researching on the Ohio State website. This is fine but I think it is misleading to advertise as a local company in business for decades. I still don't know for sure who owns and runs the company and where they are located. My first complaint is that the  salesman only provided a folder with small samples of one brand of shingles and I said I really wanted full size shingles or to see actual houses so I could choose a color. This was a major change to our home and I wanted to love the way it worked. The salesman gave us addresses of local homes so we could see sample and choose wisely. My husband and I spent several afternoons driving all over Dayton and Beavercreek to see what the colors looked like. In retrospect I guess we could have also driven out to HomeDepot or elsewhere to see shingle samples but I had just assumed the salesman would bring these. He told us a project manager would call us the following Monday to set up a day. The following Friday we had not heard back so called the company. They told us the project manager was gone all week and so assigned us to someone else - we called the next manager and he scheduled us for the very next Monday. The crew arrived 7am as promised and went right to work. They put tarps all around the house to collect the old roof and cleaned up very well. The roof was laid quickly - since there were about 8-10 men working at any given time. One problem arose concerning the "drip edge". There was no clear foreman or supervisor and all of the men spoke mostly Spanish so communicating was very difficult. We could not understand what the "problem" was until they were nearly done as we watched and waited. They had removed the top portion of our siding that runs along the eaves. Dripedge? The new product provided did not cover our wood so they left it exposed. A roofer told us this was siding and not roofing. So why was it removed at all? He said the wood was also a dripedge. We tried to discuss this with them, unhappy with old wood showing. Communication was frustrating and they told us we had to call the company if we wanted something different. We made repeated calls to the company and project manager throughout the afternoon but nobody returned the calls. Apparently the crew was able to contact him because finally at about 5pm someone brought out some new wider edging and installed it after the roof was complete - and I believe this edge should have been the first step. The crew had to pull back the brand new shingles and tack down this edge - which now hangs farther out and not flush to the side of the house - because there is an old wooden "drip edge" underneath. We later learned that this wood could have been removed but since the product they had delivered (the narrow strip) would not cover it all they opted to leave the wood there. Leaving it this way may have been functional but the exposed wood would require us to repair and repaint it. We put siding on the house several years ago to protect the wood and avoid painting! If we had this explained to us before they started we would have insisted on  a wider edge right away. Later that evening, the project manager arrived and apologized for not being available. He inspected the work and the edge they applied and said it would be fine. He said that it would not damage the new roof by installing it after the fact. I don't like the drip edge that sticks like that out but it is done. So, the biggest complaint I have is with the communication and lack of a visable supervisor or leader. As for the roof it does look very nice and the cleanup was excellent. The crew seemed very nice, worked hard and finished quickly. My impression is that Rich Roofing is a very large regional company, probably a merger of multiple companies with many project managers, many crews and resulting bad communication. Nothing wrong with that but I don't like being mislead and run around. As a consumer, I want to know the correct facts ahead of time.

All in all, the process was rather frustrating because of so many different levels of management to deal with and not really knowing who does what job - sales, project manager, crew managers, administration,  and crew.. But I do think the roof looks very nice and am happy with it for the most part. Looking back, I wish I would have used a much smaller and truly local company. That is normally how we hire for services - word of mouth and always local people. Rich Roofing was not small or local but rather a large regional contractor. I wish I would have sought multiple bidders but them offering to deal with insuance and even showing up when my insurance adjustor arrived seemed like a good idea but I would not do it that way again. It made me feel like I really should let them do the work for their effort...Higher price and convenience does not necessarily mean better quality and service. I would have preferred to have at least a few of the crew members speaking better English. I do not think I would use them again.
Response from Rich Roofing

"[Removed member name], I just wanted to respond to your review since you included concern about the size and ownership of our company. We are in fact a small, family owned company that is located in Troy, Ohio. We have been in business for almost 50 years now. The business name is Rich and Sons, Inc and we do business as Rich Roofing, which helps denote the type of work we specialize in. Rich and Sons, includes Eric Rich Sr. and his two sons Eric and Wes. After the big hailstorm, the amount of employees did increase in order to handle the large amount of damaged homes. However, at no time was the company bought out, nor did it merge with any other companies. We are grateful that you chose us to install your roof and are sorry to hear that you have any dissatisfaction. We hold ourselves to a high standard and do our best to let our customers see that. If you have any additional concerns, please feel free to contact our office. In regards to your research on the state website, we will investigate any issues with additional use of our name. Thank you for taking the time to review."

We had multiple problems with Rich Roofing from the beginning (including nobody called us back with the price of the first estimate which they lost and had to come out twice to measure and give an estimate).  We wanted a good quality roof job and were willing to pay a little more for a high quality job, but that was not the case.  Overall the roofing job was ok except for poorly installed drip edge and ice guard.  The ice guard material doesn't come all the way down in places and the drip edge is cockeyed and doesn't even meet in other places (it's supposed to overlap a little bit).
After multiple phone calls and no-shows to check out the problem, a man came out and admitted it was poor quality installation and they would repair it.  Nothing happened.  After more phone calls and more no-shows, a supervisor came out and also said they would take care of it and they would get back to us.  Again, nothing happened.  No phone calls or follow ups.
They will tell you they've corrected the problem, people have been let go and things are resolved, but don't expect any service after installation.  It still makes me a little angry everytime I hear their ads on the radio, but we've given up on getting the problem resolved and if we have any leaks, etc., we'll probably call another company to fix the problem rather than deal with the warranty.
Please be advised...if you are expecting a high-quality roof or high-quality service because Rich Roofing's price is higher than most, you will be wasting your money.  Choose another company with a good rating here on Angie's list and save yourself several thousand dollars and a lot of headaches.

I don’t trust them anymore. I cut them a cheque in the first week of October and was told that I would have my new roof on by the first week on November. Then it was coming up to the holiday seasons just before thanks giving so I gave them a call. I pressurized them because they said it would be done by now. My daughter and I would like to hang our Christmas lights the day after thanks giving so I wanted to know what was going on. They showed up on the Saturday after thanks giving. One man and his wife came and started tearing off my roof while I was at work. When I came home they were waiting on another crew to come in who never showed up. They had torn off the roof by then and didn’t put any drip pads or anything like that. There was 4 inches of rain during the next three days which completely filled my daughter’s room. The carpets and drywalls were severely damaged and they didn’t step up to the plate or anything. They said they would so I gave them a change but they didn’t. I called their 800 emergency lines and never got a call back from them. I knew there was a wet spot in my living room. They were very negligent and not very quick to take responsibility for something that they obviously caused. They came out the following Wednesday or Thursday which was 5 days later and just proceeded to put the roof. I just wanted them off from behind me so I ended up cutting their final cheque in January. I finally found someone who knew what to look for. They had put the drip edge right behind the gutter and I was wondering why the rain water has been coming behind my gutter.  They didn’t even drop the drip edge behind the gutter so I am still yet to put a call into them. I hate calling them because of the service that they have provided me. I had to make another insurance claim for my daughter’s room and all that they gave me was $500 which was my deductible for my inconvenience while my daughter didn’t even have a room in Christmas to sleep in. My daughters room had to torn out down to the studs. I had to take 3-4 extra days off of work for doing the drywall, insulation and putting a new carpet. It really ruined our holidays. They were working at my house even before and the day after Christmas trying to get it done so that I could get the carpet installed. Rich Roofing never gave me a formal apology; one guy said he was sorry but it was half hearted. I used them because I had heard a good local radio advertisement. The advertisement said they used good local back ground checked employees but not a single vehicle has showed up in the house other than the guy who did the final inspection. Three quarters of them didn’t speak English. I also heard a lot of vulgar language which was in Spanish which shouldn’t have taken place. They looked like shady characters. They also did some damage to my gutters which weren’t there before. It was a really bad experience. I would never use them again and would never suggest them to anybody too. They might have done a good job for other but they sure didn’t for me. They screwed up, ignored it and wanted to just get away. When they said they were local people I used them because I wanted more money flowing back locally. I like to spend local and keep it local; not one person who worked on my roof was from Ohio. They seemed more like a storm chasing team to me.

The inspection was performed promptly on June 27, two weeks after the the insurance adjuster's visit.  Called them two months  later for status and a week later picked out colors and wrote check for 50% down.  Called again two weeks later for status and was told work would begin the following week, which it did.  Roof was completed in one day and one hour the next day.  Two days later the gutter crew showed up and completed the gutters, gutter topper, and spouting.  This left only the single pieces of siding and trim to be replaced.  Several phone calls to the company revealed that they did not know what needed to be done to complete the job.  Working against an insurance deadline of November 25, and another one month extension, the siding and trim were replaced a few days before Christmas.  The final inspection and payment took place just before year end.  I was told that my two major contacts were both relieved of their duties, as they had been a source of misinformation, lack of communication, and lost records, causing the delays and frustration I had experienced after the bulk of the work was complete.  The other employees and contractors I had contact with acted in a very professional manner.  I also received several verbal apologies for the problems.  I believe the company performed a quality job and would use them again if they truly resolved their communication problem, which will be evident upon feedback from several neighbors and other acquaintances who have contracted with them for work yet to be started, and from feedback on this website.

We had two estimates and decided to use Rich Roofing because they were able to do everything we wanted done without multiple contractors. The flow of work went fairly smooth with few miscommunications. The major hangup we had was with the insurance company. It took all summer to finally come to terms with them. Once we overcame that hurdle things moved along. The staff from the company handled the insurance and scheduling and kept us informed. The working crews were efficient and outside of the language barrier a few times there weren't any problems. The crews did very good work and cleaned up when finished. We only had one problem with a vent shield and it was taken care of quickly. We highly recommend them and would use the company again.

They did a wonderful job. The insurance company paid for it. It was $17000. My overall experience was wonderful. The quality of their work was great. They came before schedule and completed it before their scheduled time, so their responsiveness was good. I had a lot of questions. They sent people back out and double-checked their work. After they completed everything, they showed me everything they did. They double-checked to make sure they got everything completed properly. They were pretty good. I would absolutely use them again in the future.

There was no problem with the quote turnaround from this company. The gentleman who gave me the bid was very professional but his price was quite a bit higher than the other two bidders. We went with another company and are very happy with the results. I will not use them to bid again in the future.

Top notch work.  They were thorough, knowledgeable, and careful.  They are a very professional company in my opinion.  We were completely satisfied with the roof repairs they performed.  Two of our neighbors were fortunate to have complete new roofs installed by Rich Roofing; they are clearly the best looking new roofs on the street.

Had Rich come out to quote a new roof (second layer). I've had 2 other quotes from high scoring companies on angies list and they come in around $5000. Rich came in at $8600. He asked if I had other quotes...Yes. He asked if he was higher...Yes. His response was ok. Then he showed me that his material quote alone was $4100. It wasn't until later that it hit me that therefore he was quoting $4500 in labor and profit. He didn't even try to discuss coming down in price. Other than the price, he was a very professional and friendly gentleman. They very well may do fine work, but I can't see spending that much money.

I gave him a down payment of $10920 on May 6th and he told me the roof would be done in two weeks later. It is now June 23 and my roof is still not done. I would never use this company again, nor would I recommend them to my worst enemy.
Response from Rich Roofing

"We are very sorry that things did not go as scheduled. It is not our policy to intentionally delay the work. However, this customer was refunded their deposit in full and relived of contractual obligation. The contract did not state a specific time frame and it is unfortunate that we were not able to complete the project as quickly as those involved had hoped. It is also disappointing that this customer rated our pricing so poor after signing a contract based on our pricing. It is our sincere hope that this customer was able to get the services needed, addressed and had a good outcome."
