The carpet was fair quality; with a reasonable pad; however the installation was not good. We paid specifically so we would not have a seam in the middle of our largest room (15ft carpet). However, we have two seams; and they are visible from at least 12 feet away.
We have contacted J and J three times to rectify this issue; the first time the owner said; "the seams will lay down in about 6 weeks", (they did not they used too thick glue in the seams); the last time the owner said "this install is within industry standards". we replaced the carpet because the original carpet was not installed correctly, and the doorway carpet rolled up. This was pointed out to the owner before we purchased the carpet,
The carpet was installed over two days; the first group of installers did a great job, they were very careful and it looks fine.
the second day another group of installers came, who spoke little English; and installed the larger areas that is where we have the issues.
Do: shop around on the carpet price and quality, but he installation is more important.
Don't: use J and J's installers; there must be a better group than the second team. :(
Although it was somewhat difficult to reach this company (no website and closed on Mondays), we wanted to use a local small business for our carpeting. (Past experience in our former town told us that local service for carpeting was a better deal in the long run.) I scheduled J&J to come and take some measurements of the stairs, and then I went to the office/store and borrowed some samples. I called and ordered the carpeting and paid a percentage up front. The overall price seemed high, but I attributed it to the one carpeting needing to be bound on the edges to make the runner.
The carpet came in pretty quickly, and the installation was scheduled. The installers were pleasant and on time.
After the installers were gone, I looked at the stairs and was shocked. The edge-to-edge carpeting that went down to the basement did not meet the baseboards in some places--it was as if it had been cut too narrow. I could actually see unfinished stairs along the sides. In addition, the pattern on the basement stairs was crooked, not only to the stairs, but to the other steps.
The bound carpet runner, which goes from the main floor to the second floor, had unfinished edges at the tops of the stringers. They had just cut and tacked the carpeting, and the cuts were even ragged.
In addition, both stairs felt funny when we walked up or down, and what we noticed is that the carpet pads does not go to the edges of the steps, so when we put our feet down, it's uneven to the edge. Not fully padding a stair tread makes no sense.
Fortunately I had held back $300 of our payment due. J&J came out and fixed the unfinished edges on the main staircase and stretched the carpet to the edges on the basement stairs. They did a good job on the main, bound carpet staircase, and they were very nice about it.
However, the two things that bother me every time I go up and down the stairs are the crooked carpeting to the basement and the incomplete padding on both sets of steps. Because of these things I cannot recommend J&J Carpets. Their work is just not good enough for the price. I regret not calling my old "local" company to do the job, as they are always meticulous in their work.
