Even if a company's service is lackluster, I don't go out of my way to write a negative review. In this instance, their actions have frankly pi**ed me off to the point of writing this.
The previous homeowners had to complete radon mitigation after the home inspection found high levels of radon gas (May and June). Late in the fall we saw that the system was not functioning properly (we hadn't moved in yet so we never paid much attention to the unfinished part of the basement- our error). We called the number listed on the system to have a representative check this for us. After seeing the new electrical panel we had installed, the technician passed blame to our electrician (who had updated some of the wiring in the house after we took possession) and said that the electrician must have 'messed something up.'
They completed no work at this point and we confirmed with our electrician that nothing was altered that would affect the system. We called the company again- they agreed to come out and fix the system. The best part is that the technician never mentioned that we would be assessed any kind of fee for this. All we knew is that the system had possibly never worked from the time of its installation. He also did not give us any kind of guidance as to how their warranty works, etc. We were their customer by default, so did not have any of this information. Also said nothing about a cost involved.
Turns out that they later bill us $150 for the service call- listed on the invoice is 'due to electrician error- not covered under warranty.' We had signed nothing agreeing to this--no work order completion and definitely did not agree on the supposed cause of the problem. When we called the company to discuss (again) the representative (owner possibly?) was really rude and threatened collections, liens on our house, etc. if we did not pay. He also insulted our electrician- saying he was 'obviously not qualified to do the work. Is he even a real electrician?' He assumed this because we told him he was a family friend. Wow. Rest assured that he is a fully licensed, insured, and over-qualified electrician- AND- family friend.
Because we were tired of receiving invoices, threatening letters and calls for liens, and that it was our word against theirs, we sent them the money last week (after trying to reason with them a fourth time- and the woman in the office had no idea). However, also found last week are photos of the unfinished basement from July and August, showing the system wasn't functioning before the electrician began his work- we just didn't realize it at the time when the photos were taken.
It's only $150 but as a small business owner- also of a family-run business, I'm shocked as to how this company conducts business and pretty much insults its customers without just cause or proof to stand on. Even when we had our locks changed we signed a work order completion and payment acknowledgement. That is normal.
After unearthing our photos we've decided that the system probably never functioned properly (the previous owners were on a 60amp service, after all, 2900sqft+). We will probably be contacting them again to get our money back. After this debacle we will also choose another company to monitor our system going forward. It doesn't seem like there are many choices for radon service in the Canton area (which was probably why they were chosen in the first place) but I would recommend using another company.
"Dear Ms [member name removed] Thank you for the feedback. As a local business we value our customers and take their concerns very seriously. This is why A-Z Radon Services has been in business for over 20 years with over half our new business coming from referrals of satisfied customers. Part of our installation process requires us to perform a post mitigation radon test and turn those results over to the lender as well as the state of Ohio Department of Health for review. If the system was not working properly at the time of testing it would have halted the closing of this home. We did respond to the service request and after inspection of the system it was discovered that an upgrade was performed to the electric system which included replacing the panel box. This would affect every circuit in the house. The polarity of the electrical current was reversed on the circuit with the radon fan rendering the motor inoperable. Our technician discussed the matter with the homeowner and advised that the electrical needed repaired so the fan motor would operate. This is additional electrical work is not covered under our warranty. Our technician relayed to the owner to have the electrician fix the wiring that was connected improperly during the panel replacement. We did not charge the homeowner for this service call. We then received another call stating the system was still not working and the electric had been checked by an electrician. Upon arrival, it was discovered the electric had not been fixed by the electrician. Our technician reversed the polarity in the fan housing as a courtesy which fixed the system as we advised on our previous visit. Our having to repair the incorrect wiring of the homeowners’ contractor would never be covered under our warranty. It is important to note that we made several trips to the residence to attempt the second service call and the customer was not home. As with any service repair not covered under warranty, there is a service call charge that would be assessed for the technician’s time and travel. Once again, we appreciate the feedback and wish you the best in your new home."
