It went very well. They were punctual, and accurate with the time it would take for them to complete the job. I am very pleased with their work, and am already putting together a list for our next project with Ed.
Description of Work: We had lighting installed on two floors and the exterior of our house, along with painting a four-color scheme throughout the first floor, which was complicated. Ed and Matt did a great job. It looks fabulous, just what I wanted. I am so pleased!

1) The stairs turned out beautifully. A very minor gripe with some remaining squeaking after they finished, but this was easily resolved. They even threw in some drywall repair on a couple of internal basement walls for me. The work took two days plus another hour after the week-end to finally install the treads. They were very flexible by not finishing up the installation on the second day to allow me to stain and paint the treads and risers uninstalled over the week-end. That made it a lot easier to do. 2) The windows have been a wonderful addition and we finally have removed a dark corner from our home. The stained trim and other woodwork all blends very nicely with the existing wood and you can hardly tell the configuration is not original. Very pleased with the result. Most of the work was done in two days with two more short visits on consecutive days to apply additional coats of clear polyurethane on the stained woodwork. Ed and Matt were a pleasure to work with. They cleaned up after themselves every day, left their tools arranged tidily, and took steps to prevent dust from being spread around. The cost stated was for both projects and included all materials (~$1300 of custom windows).
Description of Work: Two projects: 1) Replace the stair treads on the stairs down to the basement and add skirting boards. This required removing the old treads and risers, cutting standard treads to the correct shapes and custom-making larger treads round a 180 degree turn at the bottom. 2) Installed a couple of windows to let more light into the family room. This involved making the holes in the wall, removing part of a bookcase, fitting the windows, adding trim around the windows and blending stained and unstained areas to make it all look homogeneous. They had also specified and purchased the custom windows at the local lumber yard.

Great experience! I received immediate response from the office and quick follow-up with an initial site visit to obtain a quote. I did have to follow-up to get the quote, but this was the only issue. Mr. Compton and his crew came on the day agreed upon to perform the work. The quality of the work performed was phenomenal. Clean up performed was as expected. Great experience. I will definitely be contacting his company for future work.

We bought a house in Granville Village with a carport. The carport was in poor condition structurally and we wanted it converted into an attached, two-car garage if possible (something rather rare for that part of the village). The project was tricky. The village said that we were not allowed to remove the carport and build a new structure (the garage) because it was so close to the neighbor's yard. We could, however, convert the carport to a garage as long as we did not take down the existing structure. Unfortunately, the building department said the foundation for the carport was bad and it needed to be replaced. This left us with a problem. We hired Ed Compton and his sons through Craigslist and we were very glad we did. Ed's solution was to prop up the roof above the carport with temporary walls, keeping the roof of the carport intact. Then, he removed the carport walls and existing foundation. Next, he poured a new foundation and installed new, permanent walls to support the roof. Subcontractors (who were very good) poured the garage floor and installed electrical. After the garage door, back door, and windows were installed, the project was done. The project took about 4 weeks and the finished project was beautiful. The new garage blended perfectly with our house. Ed was more expensive than several other folks, but we think it was worth the extra price. He is a perfectionist and insists on doing everything carefully and correct. He also takes pride in his work. His makes sure the finished product is something that he would be proud of it it were on his own home. We were also very happy interacting with Ed's sons, who worked with him most days. They were very conscientious about their work and friendly. It was a real pleasure hiring a family-owned and operated business for this job. We were very pleased with Ed. He is currently working on another, smaller project inside our house.
Description of Work: Replaced carport with new two-car attached garage.

First, Ed is a very honest guy. Second, he will do what the customer wants--exactly what the customer wants (unless he can see that something will not look good!) I loved working with him. He is very creative and is a good listener. Some of the trim work was tricky, and we both put our heads together to come up with great solutions. I am more than pleased with the work he did. Ed and his assistant were here most of the day, over 5 hours. And they worked hard, did a great job, and cleaned up. I hope to have work for him in the future and highly recommend him. The price is also fair. Out of the $1020 charged, almost $700 was in materials. Labor was very reasonable.
Description of Work: Ed came out and gave a fair estimate of some custom kitchen work. This is important to know because three other trim carpenters failed to give me an estimate! That told me that, although the jobs we had might seem small, they were tricky and required someone who had years of creative experience with trim work! We had numerous items that needed special trim work: a built-in microwave built-in refrigerator, a built-in refrigerator, a built-in beverage cooler, a stair bannister that was wobbling and needed secured, and a chair rung that needed replaced. Ed came out a second time to match stain and bring sample trimwork for our kitchen. He then came out a third time and did the work, bringing an assistant. Additionally, he made three trips to the woodworking company he uses so that he could find the best match for our cherry cabinets!

Ed was right on time, and he gave careful attention to my questions and concerns. He was honest with his feedback, and that is what I wanted, not something the provider thought I wanted to hear.
Description of Work: He gave me an estimate of whether it would be worth putting a roof on a home that we were considering renovating but weren't sure when that would be or whether it should be renovated.

From the moment I called Ed, I had a positive experience. He was punctual and pleasant and kept me informed about when to expect arrival of the cabinets, island, and work force. Once construction began, the thing that most impressed me was my original soffit was done inadequately. Ed took the time to build a frame under the soffit and add a drywall piece to form the ceiling. I asked Ed why he was redoing the soffit, and he said, "Because it was not done right, and I like to do things right." You don't hear that very often these days. The job was done so nicely, even though several surprises came up along the way. Ed was a problem solver, and he overcame the problems to get the job done in a timely, quality fashion. I highly recommend him.
Description of Work: Ed replaced the old cabinets in my 1864 home in the Village of Granville. He also added an island (really a penisula -- we pushed the island against the wall).

Ed and his crew were very knowledgeable, professional and very, very good at what they do. He had excellent sub-contractors that worked the same way. They showed up for work in all kind of conditions from high 90's heat and even worked in pouring rain. He suggested several ideas that made the building of my garage better and used venders and materials that we wanted or bought ourselves. I can't say enough about the great job he did and I have recommended him to everyone I know that needs a good contractor. I am a very happy customer and will definitely use his company again.

He was very good and I'm thinking about using him on another project. He doesn't charge for materials just for the work. He made a list of what we needed and I picked it up. You know right up front what you are dealing with as far as price. He tells you the hourly cost and how long the project will take. He is very responsive as well. He also explained what he was doing as he went along.
Description of Work: I used Ed Compton Construction this past June. He worked on an exterior building for me.
Ed was a big help in giving us ideas, options and prices. They quoted prices for several different brands and styles of windows. He was careful to explain everything up front from how they would install the windows to the amount of time it would take. It took Ed and Matt just over a day to install both very large windows and install new trim inside and out. They were always on time, cleaned up after themselves and very professional. The new windows look amazing inside and out. I would definitely use them again!
Description of Work: Compton Construction replaced 2 large picture windows as well as replace the trim and new window sills. They also repair a small section of siding where a wall AC had been removed and the siding had never been properly replaced.
