"WE DID NOT "POCKET" THE $20.00 ESTIMATE FEE. EACH AND EVERY ESTIMATE FEE IS ACCOUNTED FOR ON ANNUAL INCOME TAX RETURNS, REGARDLESS OF HOW HOMEOWNERS PAY, I.E. CHECK OR CASH. THE HOMEOWNER CONTACTED US FOR A QUOTE FOR SEVERAL ITEMS THAT WERE IN NEED OF REPAIR BEFORE HE MOVED. ONE OF THE ITEMS WAS TO INSPECT THE ATTIC FAN, DUE TO A RUBBING NOISE THE FAN WAS MAKING. THE HOMEOWNER WAS INITIALLY PROVIDED WITH A VERBAL ITEMIZED BREAKDOWN OF REPAIRS. AS HOMEOWNER WAS PLANNING TO MOVE AND DID NOT WANT TO INVEST MONEY IN REPAIRS, HE ASKED US TO PROCEED ONLY WITH THE FAN INSPECTION. HOMEOWNER SIGNED DETAILED CONTRACT FOR AN UNHEARD OF PRICE OF $52.00 (AFTER DEDUCTIONS OF 10% DISCOUNT AND ESTIMATE FEE), TO PERFORM THE FOLLOWING WORK QUOTED VERBATIM FROM CONTRACT, "INSPECT FAN FOR RUBBING NOISE, MAKE MINOR ADJUSTMENT AND/OR TIGHTEN LOOSE BELT(S), IF APPLICABLE. CONTRACT DOES NOT INCLUDE REMOVING AND/OR REPLACING PART(S), NOR TRAVEL TIME TO PURCHASE PART(S)". OUR TECH INSPECTED THE FAN AND STRAIGHTENED A BENT BLADE, WHICH STOPPED THE RUBBING NOISE. HOMEOWNER ADVISED OUR TECH THAT HE DAMAGED THE FAN BY STEPPING ON A BLADE WHILE MOVING CONTENTS FROM THE ATTIC. THE FAN WAS IN WORKING ORDER WHEN OUR TECH LEFT. THE HOMEOWNER WAS BILLED $52.00, NOT $85.00 AS HE ALLEGES. THE HOMEOWNER CALLED A COUPLE OF WEEKS LATER AND ADVISED THE FAN WAS NOT WORKING AT ALL. AS THE FAN WAS 20 YEARS OLD, DON ADVISED THE HOMEOWNER TO CONTACT OTHERS TO REMOVE AND REPLACE THE FAN."
"THE HOMEOWNER TOLD ME HE RECEIVED A BID OF $2,200.00 FROM ANOTHER COMPANY BECAUSE THEY ARE SLOW. CONSIDERING THE COST OF MATERIAL ALONE, I BELIEVE THE $2,200.00 MAY BE MISLEADING, AS WAS THE HOMEOWNER’S STATEMENT OF MY PRICE BEING THREE TIMES HIGHER. MY BID WAS $3,300.00, A VERY COMPETITIVE PRICE, AND CLEARLY NOT THREE TIMES HIGHER. I APOLOGIZE FOR THE DELAY IN GETTING THE ESTIMATE TO THE HOMEOWNER. ESTIMATES ARE PERFORMED IN ORDER, AND I HAD A FINISHED BASEMENT AND SEVERAL OTHER LARGE JOBS THAT WERE REQUESTED PRIOR TO THIS ONE. THE NOMINAL ESTIMATE FEE (WHICH IS REFUNDED IF WE DO THE WORK) IS THOROUGHLY EXPLAINED TO ALL HOMEOWNERS, BEFORE THE ESTIMATE IS EVEN SCHEDULED, THAT THE FEE IS PAYABLE WHEN I ASSESS THE WORK TO BE PERFORMED."
