For starters, I'll say the place is competitively price. At $14 a month, it's a pretty hard price to beat. However, you do need to negotiate when you sign up. The initial price they give you is usually higher, but they sales people seem pretty desperate to make it happen so they'll come down. The draw backs of the low price is the fact that they make up for it in the volume of memberships they sell, which leads to a very crowded gym. It's gotten better, but during the winter months it wasn't uncommon to need to circle the parking lot to find a space or park at the apartment complex next door, and inside the gym is just as crowded. You can usually get on the cardio equipment, but if you're looking to use free weights your access to the dumbells with be blocked by people working out directly in front of the mirror and you'll likely need to and quot;hoverand quot; over someone if you want to be able to get on a piece of equipment. We paid in full for our membership, and even though we have 6 months left on it, we've decided to start looking at other gyms. The crowds make it impossible to get the equipment we'd like to use.

I have been a member for about a year. They have changed their name to L.A. Fitness. It is relatively inexpensive for what I need it for. I've had minimal interaction with the staff. They have classes. For the price it's a good place.

I have used their fitness equipment, their weight and exercise machine. It was closer to my house. The negative will be that the equipment is broken and stays broken for a long period of time. There are just little things that are really annoying about the gym. They have a lot of same type of equipment, so it is very easy at anytime a day to get on a treadmill or elliptical machine and that's the great part of it. On the downside, the waiting room gets very crowded as it is small. They have a sauna. They have a Keeter that I can work out in and it is unique. I have never seen that before. They provide a wide range of fitness equipment. Their rates have gone up. I will use them again because they are in such a convenient location.

They were on my way home. I don't really like them. Their personal training program is not very good. The trainer wasn't very knowledgeable and scheduling appointments was extremely difficult. My personal trainer quit and they didn't tell me. I did get reimbursed but it took a long time. I would probably not use them again.

I would say that probably the rates are fair. I had a little bit of problem with some of the equipment not working as I exercised. There was a bit of cleanliness issue at times for the facility especially the locker room. It wasn't horrible but just there were couple of noticeable things.

They don't tell you upfront when you sign up. If you have to cancel even a tiny thing only certain time you can do it and that's what I don't like. The facility is very nice although TV's doesn't work on the machine which is fine. One thing that I didn't like was that one friend of mine wanted to join so I wanted to get a pass to see whether she wanted to join but they said they would charge $15. Then I complaint to the owner and it was something that they could have done but the initial thing that they told me was which I wasn't pleased.

We canceled after one month. There was a general lack of parking. The trainers put on hard core sales. The overall experience was average. The price and quality of service were poor. Their punctuality, responsiveness and professionalism were poor. I would not go back to this facility.

The one thing that it has that most others don't seem to have is if anyone has knee problems it has a walking pool where I can swim and I don't feel awkward like most other places. There are accessories where you can ride bikes and also sit and watch a movie. The main reason why they put movie is we don't know while watching a movie that we are doing are fitness for two hours as well. Their price is good. It is open most of the time. It is a brand new place.

Urban Fitness is very convenient to our home. Reluctantly we've decided to cancel our membership and seek a new workout spot for the following reasons: 1. Surprise fees for and quot;administrativeand quot; and and quot;maintenance.and quot; These fees although not specified are in the agreement fine print. What is the killer is that maintenance is either slow or not happening. Machines are frequently down for weeks on end for repairs. The video monitors on half the aerobic machines are not functioning. The monitors in the men's locker room have been out for at least a year. The monitor for the reception area has been out a similar length of time. The pool is frequently down for maintenance and the temperature varies quite a bit. The showers in the locker room have not functioned properly for at least two years. There are lights out in both locker rooms, and loose tiles in the woman's locker room. The water fountains have been in a state of disrepair for several years. 2. Equipment is missing or not in it's proper place. 3. Staff is not interested in helping the clientele. Most of the staff are fitness trainers and seem competent in that regard. But these staff members seem unwilling to help members who are having trouble with machines, video displays , etc. I have never seen a staff member providing an equipment orientation for new members. 4. Focus is on gaining new members. New members are provided deals significantly better than those given and quot;charter members.and quot; In addition, personal training services are always pushed onto members. 5. Personal training focuses on high impact and quot;P90Xand quot; type training with little apparent regard for the clients current fitness leve. Fine for some, but not all. 6. No free towel service. 7. No whirlpool. Positives: 1. Plenty of aerobic machines, although in the summer the upstairs aerobic area can get warm. 2. Adequate number of free weights, although during peak periods benches are a premium. 3. Nice running track. 4. Nice lap pool when it is open. In short with better maintenance and a reasonable price structure, we'd stay.

Gym - The gym itself is a multi-level, multi-functional gym and has a wide variety of clients (big, small, young, and middle-aged). It has always been fairly clean and the showers large, with plenty of hot water. The gym has two levels; however, the upper level can only be obtained by stairs, with no elevator, which makes that area non-handicapped accessable, which, is where the stationary bikes are located. Not good for a middle-aged, arthritic woman. They do have a very small, walk-in-closet-sized "private" workout area for women who don't want to exercise with the masses, but finding available equipment to use is difficult, if not nonexistant. There are TVs located throughout the gym and one of the selling points they give you is that they play movies that you can hook your earbuds into and watch from machine-to-machine; however, the truth is that not all the machines have this capability and there are no instructions on how to connect or use this "perk." Finding someone to help you with a piece of equipment or to ask questions is also nonexistant. I wonder sometimes what would happen if someone had an accident and needed help. The locker rooms are extremely basic, with no towels, limited locker space (bring your own lock), and often not stocked with hand soap or paper towels. They claim there are hair dryers available, but they are tiny, with no power, and are broken off the wall, leaving holes in the wall, etc. Pool - The aerobic classes vary on intensity and enjoyment, depending on the instructor, which makes for an inconsistent workout and enjoyment level. No bathing suit wringer available, which I find incomprehensible for a fitness center that offers a pool. Staff - The front desk is always understaffed and I've been going here for 11 months now, and have never been greeted nicely by anyone employed by the gym...at the front desk or otherwise. Salesmen and Personal Trainers - When you originally sign up, take the extra time to read your contract very, very closely, even if you make the salesman wait on you. It's worth it to know what you're getting into here. Ask lots of questions, but don't rely on the answers to be straightforward or honest. I was told I would have someone from the gym available to take me around the various pieces of equipment and show me how they worked. In reality, what the salesman did was sign me up for an appointment with a "personal trainer," which I did not want, as I already knew what I wanted to work on...I just needed to know how each machine operated for movement of the weights, safety, etc. Going through the personal training appointment was a nightmare and the personal trainer did not listen to what I told him about what I wanted. I wasn't introduced to any of the equipment, except for a stationary bike, and instead, he made me work out with a stupied ball...something I could do at home! At the end of the appointment, I was hit up with the costs of the personal trainer, even though I told him I wasn't interested. The costs are outrageous, to say the least, and I actually found the whole experience to be insulting. Even if I had wanted to sign up for a personal trainer, I wouldn't have done so because he wasn't listening to what I had to say and/or wanted. He had his own agenda and didn't care what his potential client wanted. No thank you...especially if I'm paying YOU so much money! And Finally - Parking can be a big problem, especially in the winter. Now that there are more stores going into the little strip mall area wrapped around the side of Urban Active Fitness, parking spaces anywhere are becoming a premium, depending which times you go. I find the benefits are not worth paying for and will cancel my membership after this first year. I can get the same results by going to my condo fitness center, or just walking the neighborhood streets when the weather is nice.
Description of Work: I wanted to attend this gym because it's very close to my house, has an indoor pool, which offers instructor-led aerobic classes, and was fairly new.

We joined the fitness club and then decided to cancel within a week or two after we joined. Firstly, we felt like we were sort of pushed into signing up for a personal trainer when we joined. Secondly, we did some research on the internet after we had joined and found out that other individuals had similar experiences when they joined. They also tried to cancel their membership and had a horrible time getting their money refunded. So there were many negative reports on the internet that we felt like it was not the place we wanted to be involved with. We weren’t impressed with them whatsoever. We used their services for about a week. Their communication was misleading. I would not at all use their services again.

#1. I joined Urban Active in June, 2007 with a 2 year contract when it first opened. I was told at that time that, because I was one of the original members, my rates would always be less than others that joined later. A year and a half later they were selling memberships at 1/2 the cost of mine. #2. I renewed my membership in June of 2009. After filling out the new contract information, reviewing the total cost for the new contract, AND paying for it, I was then told about a "facilities improvement" semi-annual charge that each member must pay. This fee was not disclosed to me when reviewing and paying the cost for the contract. It is, however, printed in extremely small letters on the back of the contract. #3. I had a month-to-month contract for my minor child that I was told at the time I signed the contract that I could cancel it at any time. I cancelled it in June of 2009. However, I was charged for two more months for the contract. I wasn't told about this at the time I signed the contract nor was I told about it when I cancelled it. I was told that these charges are explained in the contract. I reviewed the contract but did not see any mention of this. However, giving Urban Active the benefit of the doubt, the print is so small that I couldn't read it even with my glasses on. Maybe it is there. #4. Urban Active advertised a summer special for $19.99 a month. I checked on this for my wife. I was told that it would cost ~ $250.00+ to set up the contract. Do the math. That doesn't work out to $19.99 a month. This is a good, clean gym and the rates are more than reasonable even with their initially undisclosed required payments. I wouldn't have a problem paying these extra dues if they were presented in an upfront manner. I do recommed the gym. However, read the entire contract - and you may need to bring a magnifying glass.

I joined Urban Active almost two years ago and was told I was getting a best rate with a "founder's rate" of $44.95 a month with a 2 yr agreement and no month to month contracts. Since then, they have a month to month rate, and I have heard of some members getting as low as $24.95 a month. I have no complaints with the facility, equipment, or classes offered. I just wish they were more loyal to those customers that were original members with their rates.

I signed up for personal training, gave them my credit card number and then had buyers remorse that evening. I went in within the 3 days allowed for buyers remorse. I had to sign MY ORIGINAL copy of the contract and give it to the lead trainer to submit. I requested a copy to which he replied "oh you can trust me. You'll get your $ back." Well, instead I got the original $934 charge plus additional monthly charges were attempted at over $400 per month. It took me MULTIPLE calls and over 3 months to get my money refunded! I had to threaten to get a lawyer. Each phone call I got a "promise" that it was taken care of. Buyers Beware!!! The gym is nice but stay clear from the personal trainers. They have the whole sales thing down!
Description of Work: This is a beautiful gym with a lot of nice equipment. They are all over customer service to get you to join but that ends once you join. The gym itself is fine but BEWARE of the personal training scam. They make their money there.
