The quality of his work was outstanding. He was very professional and built exactly what we expected. When we changed our mind on one item towards the end of the project, he adjusted with no issues and delivered exactly what we wanted.

I called Tiller Carpentry, and though Joe was involved in another job, he made time on the weekend to come out and evaluate/give an estimate. He was very prompt and courteous. We wanted the accesses to be as inconspicuous as possible. We decided on one access through the ceiling of an upstairs bedroom, and the other, through a wall in another upstairs bedroom's closet wall, which should have given access to the separate, small attic space over the master bedroom.

The work was scheduled for the next week, and Joe arrived right on time, and his finish carpenter employee (Rob) arrived soon after. In the bedroom closet, when Joe cut through the closet wall, he encountered a concrete wall that extended as far as he could reach. This wall was not on the blueprint and we could not determine why it was there. We agreed to close up the access and for Joe to return the next day with a framing carpenter he employees to re-evaluate how to access that space, as we really wanted to avoid the access in our master bedroom ceiling for asthetic purposes. Rob taped and mudded the drywall in place.

The next day, Joe returned with 3 employees: Rob, his framing carpenter, and his paint/drywall employee. Joe cut the access we had discussed in the upstairs bedroom ceiling. From there, he and the framing carpenter evaluated from inside the main attic and determined that they could access the area over the bedroom from another wall inside the second bedroom's closet. Once the second access was cut, Joe and the framing carpenter left to attend to another job. Before they left, they assured me that they had not seen any bats, although they did see some droppings. Rob stayed to create the finished doors for the two accesses. The painter/drywaller finished off the drywall repair from the day before, and primed the two attic doors once Rob had finished with them. He also returned the following day to paint the doors and ensure that all was satisfactory.

Despite the unexpected complication, Joe and his employees were very professional. They looked for solutions that worked for us, and did not settle on the easiest course of action, which would have been faster for them but would have resulted in an unattractive access in the ceiling of our master bedroom. The work was completed quickly, as efficiently as possible, and meticulously. The drywall repairs are virtually unnoticeable, and the workers were all very conscious to clean up after themselves. The cost of the job remained the same as quoted. I would definitely recommend Tiller Carpentry for any renovation needs, large or small!

We waited 9 years to finally add closet doors to the second floor bedrooms in our wonderfully quirky 1950 Clintonville home. Joe Tiller came highly recommend by Capital City Millwork and knowing we wanted to use CCM, we hired Joe at their recommendation. Naturally, we checked Joe on Angie's List first! We knew prior to beginning the project that it would be far from straightforward and thank goodness we found someone with Joe's temperament and great talent. We had a few starts and stops along the way due various factors, not significant enough to mention, but we are thrilled with the end products! If you are looking for a driven, committed, talented craftsperson, we recommend working with Joe Tiller.

A++++ If we could give Joe a higher "grade", we would!  What a nice, courteous young man who possesses the winning combination of craftsmanship, integrity and customer service!  He has a bright future ahead of him.  He was a hard worker who always arrived on time and put in an honest days work.  My retired father-in-law spent his career in Cincinnati as a high-end remodeling contractor, so we have very high expectations when we do something to our home.  The level of detail that Joe brought to our project met all of our high standards.  Not only was the work exceptional, his attention to our home went above and beyond!  Plastic and cardboard were used to protect the hardwoods and the carpet and everything was cleaned up at the end of each day.  At the end of the project the only way you would know that he had been here was because of the finished product...there was no dirt left or damage done to anything!  We will highly recommend him and plan to use him for projects in the future.

Tiller Carpentry did a good job overall. I did have troubles with his painter and to Joe Tiller's credit he is trying to make the situation right. The painter used a wacker sprayer and he got the polish everywhere and the stain didn't match. Joe Tiller did an excellent job though. He is an honest, hard worker. He matched the cabinetry we had to make it look like the original. Aesthetically it looked very good. He was very professional. We just had a problem with the subcontractor and Tiller Carpentry is fixing the issue.

The project went great. The final product is amazing. What a difference to have the wrought iron installed, which was a recommendation of Joe Tiller. We had wanted to just do wood spindles and we are so glad we followed his advice. The floors look amazing, they were really damaged but now look fantastic. The new wood floors in the kitchen look great and match up really well to the rest of the wood that was already in our home. Over all Joe and his team did an amazing job. He was very professional and organized. This was a messy project and he took every care to ensure the rest of our home wasn't effected by the dust and mess. We had a great experience with Tiller Carpentry and will definitely use them for all our future projects.

EXCELLENT remodeling experience - very pleasant and stress-free! Mr. Tiller, Dan (framing - excellent work!) and Josh (painter and his crew) were terrific! Everything went on schedule! Joe is more than capable in his capacity as "general contractor" (I wish we had found him in the Springtime and given him ALL the work that we needed to have done around our home as it would have saved us a great deal of stress [and time]!) He is very hard working and is extremely talented, to say the least. He has a gift for anything made of wood (he also has experience with masonry!) and he personally put the sheet metal liner together for the laundry chute (it came in sections). The top part of the laundry chute, located in the closet, looks like ARTWORK - it looks like a VERY FINE pedestal to be used to show off a beautiful vase, sculpture, or a blown glass piece! We chose to have it built high, at 44" with its door accessible from the front to avoid having to stoop down to drop clothes into it (its also good to build it high to keep toddlers from accidentally falling in). Joe built the "picture frame" for the access door from paint-grade poplar wood with a very nice, thick profile. He also selected the knob for it (great choice for the hardware - modern, European hinges!) He built another door for the bottom of the laundry chute, visible in the basement (this door will remain closed at all times to keep drafts and the "basement smell" from drifting up into the upper part of the home. We plan to accumulate the laundry in the chute and when ready to launder, will manually open this door (from the basement) and let all the clothes drop down at once into a waiting hamper below). Hopefully, photos of the finished laundry chute will be taken and posted on Joe's website as a picture is truly worth a thousand words! I would be terribly remiss if I did not mention that Joe took great care to make sure the interior of our home was well protected from any and all debris (sawdust, dirt, damage, etc.) This aspect of any project is equally important to its overall success, if not more so, and it is greatly (sadly) being overlooked by many contractors leaving us (in our personal experience) to do the clean up work ourselves. Its so wonderful to be able to come back in, after a fairly major project like this has been completed (and also stop by in the evenings, during the course of it), and look around and see that everything was left in order, NEAT AND CLEAN! Joe is REALLY CONSCIOUS about keeping up with the debris that is created on a daily basis, as the project progresses - so much so that I am left with the impression that this project did not create ANY debris (which I know is simply not possible)! This kind of jobsite clean-up is what I always read about and never got to personally experience before, until now - with TillerCarpentry! Wow! I really don't think there is anyone better out there than Joe Tiller - he is a carpenter of the highest caliber, at the top of his field! Evidently, as a wonderful bonus, he is also quite versitile in other trades/skills as well! He has a great work ethic (for such a young man!), TONS of integrity and is just an all around great person! My husband and I feel very fortunate to have met him - "our carpenter". We now know exactly who to call for any future projects! Thank you for everything Mr. Tiller!

Contractor subcontracted work to a non-employee that was uninsured and not bonded. Subcontractor removed all trim around wall and then removed large portion of drywall. Upon removing drywall, subcontractor discovered HVAC running inside wall. Subcontractor left job immediately leaving our home dirty. Contractor did attempt to get an idea if HVAC could be rerouted but it could not. Contractor expected us, homeowner to share the cost of putting the house back together because he said he was "bleeding" money on this job. Contractor did a non professional job of putting trim casing back on walls and did not bother to paint the unpainted, replaced drywall. The contractor did "half way" offer to come back and paint but at this point we did not want him back in our house!! Not only were we, the client, inconvenienced with the job in a big way he wanted us to pay for their mistake!! There are plenty of carpenters out there ~ I'd pass on this one.

Joe Tiller was always very puctual and easy to get a hold of. In addition to the work listed above we also decided that the sub floor in that room needed at least 1/4 replaced. When the work was "done" all the above work was completed except the sub floor replacement. The problem was I thought it was necessary and the carpenter doing the job decided it wasn't. I used Tiller carpentry because I wanted that done and they were the only ones willing to do it. This caused a problem because Joe Tiller did not itemize the estimate and kind of guess-timated the actual final bill. After some negotiating Joe met me half way on a final price, but in the end I had someone who would have done the same work for about $350 less. I also had to call them back out to re-do a sloppy sealent job. In the end I really felt like the carpenter was a bit bored with the whole project. I do not have a problem with the overall quality of work perfomed, but when you have a clear understanding of what is to be done you expect it to be done.
Response from Tiller Carpentry
"I am truly disappointed that the customer was not totally satisfied with all aspects of the project. This project was unique in the fact that the extent of the water damage could not be known until the work was actually being performed. The estimate reflected this in that I had to approach the job in a worst-case scenario. When the problems areas where located it was determined that the extent of the damage was less than worst case. I deducted $600.00 form the invoice that was agreed to by both parties, leaving the job total at $1,282.35. I had thought the homeowner and I shared the understanding that the extent of the work would be known when the extent of the damage was known and the price would reflect the scope of work. Each job is important to me and leaving the homeowner totally satisfied with all aspects of the job is my goal."

Perfect, awesome, beautiful...just a few words to describe the results of the work performed by Tiller Carpentry. Joe answered our call right away and was promptly on time the day he was scheduled to be at our house to estimate the above projects. We knew within minutes that we were not going to bid out the job to anyone else. Joe is knowledgeable, talented, professional, confident and carries a positive attitude. Joe used subs for painting and staining that were just as skilled and as professional as he is. Joe tweaked a few things along the way from the original plans and they turned out better than expected. We have other projects to be considered and we would not think of calling anyone else. Joe is the best and we would HIGHLY recommend him as you will not be disappointed.

It went great overall. The workers that came were very professional. Our basement is not level, so they tried very hard to make the built-ins appear that they were level. They were very professional and very capable. It's a really nice finished product. I am very much happy with the work they have done.

Joe is a true gem. He has excellent customer service skills--he was courteous, prompt, and worked well with other contractors (we had a lot of other work being conducted at the same time). Most importantly, Joe takes great pride in his work. I feel comfortable that he provided the same quality of workmanship that he would provide if it were his own home. He spent hours making sure the angles on our crown matched the crown on our cupboards. We can't wait to hire him to help us with additional projects throughout our home.

Absolutely beautiful built-ins. Joe returned our call for estimate very quickly. Gave us an estimate that was in line with 3 other carpenters that we had look at the job. Then finished the job for about $500 less than the estimate. Joe also listened to us. The other carpenters tried to tell us what they thought we should do because the space was difficult. The measurements were complicated. One side was 2 inches wider than the other. The floor of the room slopes a good inch from one side to the other (older home) and even the existing entry to the room was not plum. Joe found all of this and was able to design a custom bookcase that made everything look square. He lowered the height of the entry to give us a shelf of books above the door while maintaining the open feel. The other carpenters didn't want to do that. They said that we should just put two separate bookcases on the sides and they still gave us estimates from $4000-$4500. Joe tied it all in amazingly. He kept saying. "We can do that". "We can figure something out". And he did. These bookcases are over 9 feet high and 4 feet wide with the total span of more than 13 feet. Inset doors and accent trim give the bookcase a clean, simple but elegant look that we were going for. Bravo Joe! The pictures say it all. Fabulous. We loved it so much we had him build a pediment across the entry, then a custom bookcase for our new baby, then a smaller built-in downstairs. Cost of the pediment ($100). Joe is professional, but friendly and down to earth at the same time, making every interaction comfortable. A man of few words, young and enthusiastic but with experience, and he gets the job done. We would highly recommend Joe and plan to bring him back for more work in the future.

I just purchased my first home. The house was built in 1956 and in need of renovations. I hired Joe Tiller to build a kitchen island for my new counter tops. Joe was prompt, professional, and right on price. I was so pleased with his craftsmanship and attention to detail in the project, I had him do all the woodwork in my home.
