Day 2, Roto-rooter tech, John Brooks, cabled toilet line which was still blocked, and again thought we had cleared the problem.
Day 3, Monday July 21, 2014, Roto-rooter tech, Matthew or Matt, came to our home because we were still experiencing some kind of blockage in the toilet line. My husband was the only person home when Matthew arrived and he had already begun to assess the problem. I joined them when I got home from work to hear Matthew saying that he was absolutely sure the problem was not a blockage but that the inside of a cast-iron y-shaped pipe was completely corroded and collapsed inside. He stated that although the cast-iron looked fine on the outside he was positive it was rusted and collapsed on the inside. My husband suggested cutting a piece of the pipe above the cast-iron and taking a look inside. Matthew stated that we didn't want to cut any pipes. Matthew began explaining that to fix our problem he would have to jack-hammer the bathroom floor up above this pipe and go through the wall to remove and replace this cast-iron piece with a completely different configured pipe. He stated this would entail getting permits from the city of Gahanna and would cost between $4000 and $6000. I then told Matthew that because of the extensive work the high cost that I was going to get a second opinion. Matthew immediately stated, "If you want to get some 'Hill-Jack' plumber with no experience in here to mess things up that's just fine!" He then went on to repeat at least 3 times with a sarcastic
half laugh, "Sorry you're upset that something's broke" to which I replied that I was not upset that something was "broke," I was not convinced that what he was explaining was the problem. Matthew continued to be rude, so much so that I told him he needed to leave my home. To which he replied, "I will! This conversation is OVER!" I then said I was going upstairs to call the main Roto-rooter number to have someone else work on this (there is a guarantee so we were trying to get things fixed by this company because we had already paid). Matthew interrupted me and yelled, "This conversation is over -- why are you still talking?" I told him again to leave my home. A call to Roto-rooter to advise of this situation was never returned.
"Thank you so much for your feedback. We are currently in the process of investigating your concerns further so that we can address with our team. We will be in touch with you if we have any additional questions and to provide an update. Pat Swanson Customer Satisfaction Manager"
Jamie Carter was the service gentleman, who arrived on time, introduced himself, and was pleasant, polite, and clean.
After Jamie observed all of my problems, he pointed out another small leak, in the basement that i had not noticed. He told me that the pipes in the basement would need to be replaced, and also he could rebuild the shower tub fixtures instead of replacing them, which I was VERY HAPPY about, and at that point , I knew that he was my ANGLE that I prayed for. I say that because, I didn't ask Jamie about rebuilding the shower and tub fixtures, he just told me that on his own, when other contractors gave me estimates for REPLACING the shower and tub fixtures, even when I asked about rebuilding them, they said NO, that I would have to replace the whole thing, which would involved cutting my bathroom tile out, or cutting a larger access hole under my kitchen cabinet including a 2 x 4, which didn't seam right. This would have been more business for them, but another problem for me!
Jamie was very hard working and about his business and did whatever it took to ensure all work performed was working correctly and completed with out any leaks.
As far as I'm concerned, I'll tell everyone that i know who is having a plumbing problem to call Roto Rooter, and ask for Jamie Carter.
The guy they sent seemed punctual and professional enough at first. He commenced to check the main line drain via the pipe access in our yard, though he did so a bit slowly, often just staring in front of him several minutes claiming it'd likely be a big job. My boyfriend came home during his inspection and told him about the problems he experienced when trying to fix the problem himself. It was almost like a switch going off - the guy became quite snarky with him and began acting like he knew it all.
All of a sudden, he started adding to what he thought the problem was and quoted us a price of $400 an hour, which was to cover his time as well as bringing in a younger guy to do the actual work (he was a bit older and refused to even enter our crawlspace to inspect anything there, despite our problem being down there). He also refused to provide a written quote, which was supposed to be part of the complimentary assessment.
We felt it pretty suspicious that he would quote such a high price without even inspecting the crawl space or providing anything in writing. It seemed as though he didn't even want the job and we decided to not use their services - ever! We called another company, who responded promptly and fixed the problem in less than a half hour, for less than Roto Rooter quoted us!
Primary reason for blockage was not immediately evident; two different technicians (_______ and "Super Shawn") spent almost three hours combined working snakes in multiple starting points without success; once cause of problem was identified as corroded lateral line, field supervisor Rob Brady was able to arrange for an excavation and repair team ("Sarg" Robert and "Country Boy" Andrew) to come on site that same afternoon; work went well and proceeded exactly as planned; once line was exposed, further corrosion was identified and an additional change order was written at a very reasonable price; Robert and Andrew stayed until after 10pm to complete the job and clean-up the area.
I was vey pleased with the rapid response and manner that was used to diagnose the root cause of the problem and propose solution(s). Each element of the plan was fully explained and executed exactly as described. All four young technicians demonstrated excellent knowledge, skill, and customer relations as did the field supervisor. If plumbing services are needed again at my home, I will be calling this company again and asking for these technicians to be assigned to respond. I am also recommending them to friends and neighbors. Several neighbors observed the R-R trucks in front of my house for over twelve hours.

Called them on a Saturday morning, as the toilet had clogged for the second time within a month. The technician came out as scheduled and augered the commode. He was nice, efficient, and cleaned up after himself. It took him about 15 minutes to do the job.
He had me sign a waiver about possible scratching from the equipment, but stated that he'd never made scratches before and that I probably wouldn't care about the inside of the toilet anyway. That was fine, I knew that is a possibility. After he left I noticed many scratches in the bottom of the bowl. Not a problem, as I had signed a waiver, but I was a little disappointed that it happened and he didn't mention it.
On Sunday morning March 24, the toilet nearly overflowed again. Another technician came out that afternoon; no charge as they have a week-long guarantee. Augered again, never mentioned the possibility of removing and resetting the toilet (he should have at least mentioned that, since clearly the previous day's work did not solve the problem). He assured me it was fixed, and left. Took him about 10 minutes. He was pleasant and courteous as well.
On Tuesday morning March 26 the toilet nearly overflowed yet again! I called and asked to speak to a manager. Never did get to speak to one, but did discuss the matter with an office worker. She asked if I had been given the option of them removing, augering, and resetting the toilet for a (around $325, I think). When I informed her I hadn't, she said that they could send someone out to do that and I could pay the difference. I asked if I could use another coupon, since this would be the third visit and the option wasn't offered at the initial visit, but was informed that this was not likely. No acknowledgement of mistakes on the company's part, or the fact that I've had to juggle schedule around due to the job not being done correctly the first time . . . or the second.
At first I scheduled a third appointment, but after further reflection decided to cancel and go with another plumbing company that I've used several times in the past (the only reason I didn't contact them in the first place is because it happened on a weekend and I wasn't sure they had emergency services). It may cost me more money in the long run, for sure, but the peace of mind will be worth it. The technicians are nice and courteous, but do not seem very knowledgeable, and the office staff do not seem to care much about the customer.
**3/27/14 update: I left my price "grade" at C, but did toy with a "D" after my experience with the other company. Roto Rooter originally quoted me $199 for the 15-minute augering job, but I paid $159 because I had a coupon. My tried and true folks charge $109 (minus a $20 coupon) for the same job, and removing/resetting the commode was over $100 less as well. Bottom line is lower cost for a better job. Just thought it important to share. Thanks.
Our house is old with narrow doors. He had to take the door off to get his equipment through. He did it with ease !.
The old cap was hard to get off, but he kept trying until he got it.
He completed this job, with professional skill, great attitude and a smile the whole time. He reassured me (I was so worried about the cost and results). I felt confidence right away.
It works great ! Problem solved. I will not hesitate to call them again !
