Griffey Remodeling

Having worked with multiple remodelers and contractors on two different houses, Charlie Griffey is by far the best I've ever worked with. I have high expectations, and Charlie exceeded every one. Charlie had workers at my house every day (including some weekend days) during my project and communicated with me (unsolicited) on a daily basis. This is unheard of for a contractor. Furthermore, his subs do great work. Charlie was not satisfied until we were completely pleased. He even called later after the project was completed to make sure we were happy. He had recommendations for me that I was hesitant to pursue, but he ended up being spot on. Furthermore, we encountered a delay (in shipping--not Charlie's fault), and Charlie remedied the situation himself in order to stay on track. I cannot say enough good things about Charlie's communication, professionalism, efficiency, or attention to detail.

We have worked with Griffey Remodeling three times: a bathroom remodel, a kitchen remodel/add-on, and a new garage. Griffey Remodeling has never been the lowest bid, but we continue to work with them for several reasons: 1. They always completed the job at or under budget. 2. Their bid included everything to complete the job (no add-ons like paint, trim, etc.). 3. When there was an occasional miscommunication, changes were made to our satisfaction. 4. The final product is as good or better than we anticipated. Griffey Remodeling designs and picks out finishes based on preliminary conversations. However, we were also allowed the option to purchase the finishes ourselves. That was how we were able to come in below budget and had the ability to make our own finish selections. We had a different project manager each time, but Charlie Griffey is part of the process from beginning to end. In the end, the extra expense is well worth the price because there are no cost surprises, and the final product is first rate.

In April, we called and spoke with Taylor, who said she would pass our name and contact number along to the appropriate person with information about our project. We never heard back.

Difficult to speak with by telephone. Very abrupt and disinterested in the job when I finally was able to reach him by cell phone while attempting to schedule a visit for a quote. He advised me work could not be started for over a year. I have moved on to more interested businesses. It is a shame because the quality of work on their website looks appealing.

We gutted our mid century galley kitchen and couldn't be happier with the results. Charlie's team is outstanding. Jeff, the Project Manager , kept everything on schedule and there weren't any issues they couldn't handle. We plan to use Griffey Remodeling for our bathrooms too.

We loved working with Griffey Remodeling and would hire them again in an instant.  We interviewed an architect and three home builders/remodelers.  We chose Charlie because he could do the architect piece and build, which saved money compared to what the independent architect wanted, and he was using his own plans, so it went smoother because it was all his work and he knew what he was doing.  The price was also more fair compared to other prices we got.  He said, "I started out building decks and I could build this entire garage myself if I had to."  Loved to hear that.  He took all the time he  needed with our questions and was so patient and friendly.  We saw his booth at the Home & Garden show and we could tell he had some great work.

 We give this company an A+++.  Our project started about September 1 and was done by Thanksgiving. We had neighbors guessing that would never occur, but it did. We were able to show it off to out of town family at Thanksgiving!  They matched the tudor style of the house and used all the same colors and materials for everything that I dug out of my files.  It looks like the garage has always been there though the house was built in 1972.   Charlie was honest from the start, put everything in writing, and no numbers changed on us from beginning to end unless we added something.  He would even back off things I found myself and delivered to the site that I wanted to incorporate.  They also let me research and pick things out myself like exterior lights, pull down attic stairs, exterior doors, garage doors, stone on outside steps.  I like being involved in colors and design too and they let me give final input though they will also do it all for you.  It was awesome because my husband is an engineer and we have done all past renovations ourselves so I was used to being hands on with it. They were easy to work with if I wanted to switch something.  

If I purchased something myself, I could get points on credit card, deliver it to them, and they would back it off the bill for me.  Being an anal accountant, they passed all the tests.  If a draw was due and I had to sell stock and transfer, they were lenient on time due.   They let my husband and I paint the interior drywall and I stained all the Pella windows after they were installed to save money.

We also loved our project manager Jeff P.  He was so friendly and had excellent building experience 20+ yrs himself with larger home builders.  We could talk with him for hours.   We'd say Jeff needs a promotion and a raise!  Don't let him go anywhere because we need more remodeling done.  Anything that went wrong, he fixed immediately.  He was always available by text or phone. On our teardown of the old structure, the neighbors split rail fence had a broken beam and they had it fixed by the next day.  We also had some trouble with the tear out of a cement porch slab that had metal bars going into the cinder block of the crawl space and they also had their masons fix that at no charge.  A third thing that happened was my fault. I gave them a wrong gutter color for the brown gutters and we had to have them replaced after they were cut and bent, and luckily they didn't start installing them so they were so nice to split the bill with me because we didn't check it prior because I thought I had the right color.  It is now February and we have no issues with any of the work. Love the garage.  My husband & I spend weekends out there doing things.

All subcontractors were excellent.  The brick guy, the masons,... though many of the guys are employed by Griffey.  I was nervous about having people in the house I didn't know but it was no trouble and we had no issues. Jeff was there too.  Because the exterior had a lot of decorative and fancier cedar work and curves/corners Griffey put Lance on our job who is an Amish carpenter from Plain City - out where Miller Cabinet is, so we had a top of the list carpenter/finish carpenter on our job.  Lance did some awesome glossed cedar work on the ceiling of the walkway to the garage.  I wish I could post pictures. My husband would just stand outside and watch the carpenters in awe. They trimmed out things and put details on things with woodworking that I never would have even thought of and I consider myself pickier.  Loved the experience and we will definitely call Griffey Remodeling again when we turn our old garage into a great room.  I would also love to use them to extend the dining room to fit bigger table, and to finish off the attic.

I wish I could give Griffey Remodeling a grade higher than an A.  This company was outstanding.  They were professional and honest.  They gave me a detailed daily schedule of what I needed to expect.  Of course I expected them to have delays and not follow the schedule but that WASN'T the case.  There was a project manager that came to the house to check on the workers and check in with me to make sure I am happy with the work.  The workers were clean, always arrived on-time and were very nice.  They even went above and beyond what I needed.  I had furniture delivered one day and they offered to carry it upstairs and set it up.  If you are in need of any type of work, you need to use Griffey Remodeling.

Griffey Remodeling did an addition on our garage a few years ago. We were very impressed with the overall experience that we knew when we decided to finish our basement, Griffey Remodeling was the one we were going to call.

In June 2014, we met with Charlie several times to go over the plans. He listened to what we were looking for as well as he threw out some additional ideas which were very helpful since we never have thought of a few things.

As soon as they became available Charlie and his crew came out and got to work. His crew was very professional and extremely courteous while they worked in our home.  They made sure to clean up each day as the job is in progress and I never felt uncomfortable with them working in the house while we were gone.

Timelines and prices were exactly as they were explained in the contract, there were no surprises along the way.  Any time a problem or a change needed to be made Charlie and his team worked with us immediately to find the best solution. We were always kept in the loop, almost daily, as to what the status of our project was and what the plan for the week was. We cannot say "thank you" enough for the continuous contact and updates along the way. Charlie and Jeff (our project manager) were excellent communicators.

The end product is amazing -- and on time!  Our basement is even better than we would have imagined and will be a space our family will enjoy for a very long time.  If you are looking for an honest company, top quality work at a fair price, the Griffey Remodeling is definitely the right choice for you.

Very well, They began work when promised and stay within the projected time frame.  The ideas presented were beyond anything we would have conceived on our own, and they worked with us until we came up with our best options.

They did a beautiful job redesigning our master bath into a much more functional and usable space by removing a large corner tub that we didn't use, and replacing it with cabinet linen storage and a dressing area.  We absolutely love the result, and the whole process from start to finish was seamless.  Compared to other contractors that we talked with, Charlie was extremely professional and well organized. Jeff Phillips oversaw our job, and he was very easy to work with. Things always happened exactly when we were told they would, or we were notified of any changes.  The project was very well run with hardly any down time.  Jeff was on top of every detail during the construction process, even things that we didn't notice, and was very responsive to any questions or concerns we had.  He went above & beyond to make sure that we were happy with our bathroom.  We would definitely recommend Griffey Remodeling and wouldn't hesitate to use them again in the future.

We are so glad that we hired Griffey Remodeling to renovate our home. Our first floor remodeling project included a gutted and redesigned kitchen and dining area with custom cabinets, removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room, new center hall, relocated walls and doorways, renewed living room and family room, and a partially renovated master bath. Charlie is a total professional, and he listened carefully to all our wants and needs before presenting us with a creative and functional plan to update our house. If you have a special design need, Charlie will make it happen. He is easy to work with, responsive to emails and phone calls, and gives accurate and complete estimates. We loved working with our project manager, Jeff, who remained on top of the project, respectful, hard working, and highly communicative every step of the way. The subcontractors were well selected, very trustworthy, and skilled in their craft. There was never a time that we did not get immediate return phone calls either from Jeff or Charlie when we had questions, and they went above and beyond to be sure everything was done correctly and to our satisfaction. They are fun to work with, professional, and talented. We would without question hire them again for any project.

No issues, No complaints.  Quality of work was excellent with attention to detail.  Very responsive to questions or concerns during project - would definitely recommend and use again.

The whole thing exceeded my expectations.  They told me when it would begin and when it would end.  They kept their word on the beginning date BUT they completed the job before they thought they would.
Also, because I didn't quite spend all of my allowance for appliances, they brought the job in under budget!
Early completion and under budget - I certainly didn't expect that to happen.
Charlie Griffey was totally professional and had good suggestions for me in designing the plan.  Kevin Folk, the guy who supervised the job, was also totally professional and very responsive to my questions and comments.  The cabinets were all custom made and they look terrific and perform perfectly.
 Overall, it would be impossible for me to be more pleased with the job and with Griffey Remodeling. I give them my highest recommendation.

I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience. From the first meeting to the last contact we felt comfortable and confident with the entire team. If I ever had a question, I knew I could get my answer within a few hours day,night, or weekend. Their subs were the utmost professionals and I was never concerned with leaving my home with them working inside. I have, and will continue to, recommend Griffey Remodeling.

The project took much longer than anticipated.  It didn't get off to a good start since the project manager hadn't seen the design until the day he started the project.  I wasn't aware the company used so many subcontractors.  Maybe this is standard, but there seemed to be frequent miscommunication between the project manager and the various workers (as well as inspectors) concerning when people would be in the house and what they were expected to do.  Again, maybe this is to be expected.
That being said, the project manager was friendly and easy to work with.  When there were problems, he was responsive and open to discussing options.  For the most part, I am happy with the results (and I have high expectations).  I would use Griffey Remodeling again because I know how they operate and what to expect and wouldn't want to go through another major project with anyone else.

We were looking to get an estimate on a variety of household projects.  Company was prompt in getting back to us and showed up on time to our home to give an estimate.  His estimates were on the higher end of what we received from other contractors.  I cannot comment on the quality of their work.   Ultimately, we decided to use a different company for our projects and are quite happy with our decision to do so.

Came to the house to provide an estimate.  After 10 - 15 minutes of discussion, informed us that he could not do the job within our budget of $50K.

We called Griffey about doing a possible kitchen remodel for our small kitchen and possibly a bathroom in Columbus, Ohio.   We didn't use the company because of situations that would effect our project and timing.

We are very satisfied with the final product. Interactions with owner were outstanding. Helped us select the best materials and configurations to fit within our budget, and stayed within the original estimate. A major reason of why we choose this company was because it promised a designer that would do most of the leg work in the selection of colors, materials and other construction components - this ended not being the case and our involvement became very significant. Day to day supervision was clearly lacking, resulting in numerous mistakes that delayed the project very significantly. Yet, the owner was very responsive to these shortcomings and took care promptly of all the costs that resulted from their mistakes. The project took almost 10 months - this long time was not justified by the magnitude of the work, or by any estimate that the contractor provided us. Very often workers would come only once or twice a week because the company was over-committed and had nobody that could come and continue with what was started. On the other hand, the workers had always a great and respectful attitude. The owner and workers were always open to suggestions or to make a change here and there to be as non-intrusive as possible.

They are excellent. They are very professional people. The people that work with Griffey, they want to make everything right. They listen to you. When they come, they do the work and they clean up. Their pricing is also very good. We had other people look at the project and their price was very good.

We'll start by saying that we absolutely love our new
remodeled bathroom, it is beautiful and a dream come true!

We originally contacted Charlie in the summer of 2013, and
he came out for the estimate in September 2013. He completed several
projects for two neighbors and we were very impressed with the work he did
on those projects. Griffey Remodeling is an extremely busy company and the
work was finally scheduled to begin April 2014. It was worth the wait!
We had many hesitations, but Charlie and his team
made the process much easier than we had imagined. Charlie?s eye for
detail, especially the tile layout, was very creative and fit in with the
overall bathroom design. We struggled with the details of a large mirrored
wall. I found a photo on Houzz.com of a custom cabinet, crown molding
and mirror surround. Charlie was able to find a sub-contractor who
completely understood and made it to our specifications. It is a
spectacular focal point of the bathroom.

Ty, who is a master craftsman, did all the tile work.
He planned out the placement of almost every tile to feature the unusual
details of each one.

Kevin, the production manager, was extremely patient
and attentive to all our calls and emails. The other sub-contractors that
were used were all very good, and respectful of our home.

Having built three homes we expected there to be issues;
however, there were far fewer issues than we anticipated.  And, as
with any project, there are always delays, unexpected expenses and errors
or things that just go completely wrong. All of those things happened, but
each was handled with extreme professionalism and expertise. What
impressed us the most was the quick response when there was an issue, and
the willingness to keep trying to fix it while never making us feel like
we were overreacting.

We have no doubts that if there are problems that come up
in a year or more that are due to the remodel, that Charlie will stand by
his work.

 We will definitely use Griffey Remodeling in the future for
other projects, we recommend them highly!

Charlie met us at our home to discuss the project and to go over existing plans. We had been invited to view his work earlier in the season and were very impressed. He used our existing plans to come up with an estimate for us.

Summary -  Good design work, professional team, addresses problems, very fair .... plan that it will take longer than estimated.
Our home was built in 1939 and had a small kitchen and limited outdoor space.  We had talked to several remodelers about this job, but Griffey was the only one who seemed to understand what we wanted, and didn't try to talk us into designs that we didn't want.  Charlie didn't try to "sell" us or pressure us, which we really appreciated.   
We are very happy with the final remodel; the design was even better than we had envisioned and we absolutely love our new spaces.  Griffey's team and most of the subcontractors did excellent work (the crew who built the screen porch were excellent and really designed a great space),  were very professional and courteous, and the workmanship and materials were generally very high quality.  When problems arose (as they always do) the team worked with us to resolve.  (for example, water seeped into the new crawl space under the bumpout, and Griffey worked with subcontractors to identify the cause of the problem and ended up fixing possible sources of the leaks as well as installing a sump pump to ensure the space stays dry -- and it has stayed dry through the winter and spring !) .  We spoke with our city building inspector a few times during the remodeling, and he told us that Griffey is one of the good contractors because if they have a problem, they fix it. 
Price - not the cheapest or the most expensive bid;  we chose Griffey because we knew we could work with him.  The contract specified that we would be charged for unforseen expenses, but Griffey didn't "nickle and dime" us, and we felt that they were very fair.  I think Charlie has enough experience to know how to estimate the job, and the final cost came in only a little over the original estimate.
Responsiveness and Punctuality - Team was accessible by email/text/phone and answered questions reasonably quickly.   I think they were very very busy with many remodeling jobs, and they weren't always able to fix problems quickly - our job took about twice as long as estimated.  Sometimes many days went by with no activity, which was frustrating. Some delays were caused when we changed floor design due to poor initial concept. 
Remodeling is a dirty and unsettling process.   Kind of like childbirth---once the baby is born, you forget all the not-so-fun stuff and enjoy the baby.   We read about contractors who cheat their customers or do shoddy work but Griffey is a fair, ethical company who does very good work.... and the results are well worth the pain  !
