About us

When Pat and Dan Hurst founded Hurst Design-Build Remodel in 1997, they set out with a simple goal: to be the best home remodeler in the Cleveland area. To achieve their goal, the brothers knew that quality, creativity and client care were the keys to success. “Is there a better way to do this?” became their guiding principle. Overall, we did a full first floor remodel with Hurst and had an overall great experience. Our project manager (Tyler) was amazing and the craftsman (especially Mike) were extremely skilled, friendly and accommodating. The design process was thorough and we landed on some options we love but would have never imagined if it was just us. The Good Absolute amazing craftsman on site, some truly stunning quality custom work Extremely high quality work across the board Very strong warranty and responses on warranty items Good design process with lots of ideas generated Room for Improvement Like any remodel, we had a few bumps along the way. Our project was in the middle of rising costs in the pandemic, so we did have some budget issues along the way. And I also got the impression the back of house office operations at Hurst were running thin at times as we did have a handful of miscommunications.

Perfect! Hurst designed a beautiful space for us to enjoy the outdoors complete with a covered porch with skylights, entertainment area, and a large built in grill space with cultured stone and granite counters. It looks amazing and I will be using them again.

I got 3 estimates - all from big reputable construction/remodeling companies for the exact same work.  Hurst's price quote was extremely high - $12k higher than one estimate and $29k higher than the other. That's right - $29k higher. How in the world could one company charge $29k more than a similar company for the same work?  The Hurst estimate wasn't as detailed as you would think it should be if they expect someone to pay them $53k for work.  It wasn't even broken down into cost of each project like the other 2 estimates were.  When I spoke with the rep about the estimate, he attempted to explain why the cost was so high.  I was shocked to learn that they were charging me for their mistakes.  For example, in the estimate they included the cost to paint my entire first floor because "it would get pretty banged up while they did the work".  So, they fully anticipated that they would bang up all of my walls so badly that all walls would need to be painted and they wanted me to pay for it.  They also said that when installing the floors, the baseboards would be broken and I would have to pay for new baseboards.  And that when they removed my old countertops, my backsplash would be broken and I would have to pay for new backsplash.  Of course, I'd also have to pay for the cost of labor in painting and replacing things that they damaged.  This makes no sense to me.  Notably, neither of the other 2 estimates included me paying for damage the contractor did to my home.  Finally, I emailed the representative and asked if it could be broken down by project 31 days ago and haven't gotten a response yet.  Needless to say, I will not be hiring Hurst for my project.

We interviewed 5 remodeling firms.  We were very impressed with the Hurst process.  An online calendar that tells us what will happen each day; a weekly meeting with our project manager to talk about what has happened, what will happen, and our questions, concerns, suggestions, requests.
They have been responsive, respectful, dependable, and professional.  Our project manager has kept us informed at every step of this process.
10 weeks is a long time for your life to be disrupted by a remodeling project of this size.  The finish date was expanded by one week due to the changes we added.
The remodel looks amazing.  We are very happy and recommend this firm without hesitation.

Dan Hurst was horrible. He is completely unresponsive and has no follow through skills. He is not reliable at all and does not return phone calls. We fortunately got referred to another company who has been tremendous. I would not recommend Hurst at all. Save yourself time and aggravation and contact someone else.

We like to give a feedback about them because they're very. very good. They're excellent in everything, as a matter of fact, I've mentioned them to a number of people. First they were very professional, very courteous, very complete with all of the details, and everything we wanted to do they were very open to. They were very detailed, they have everything online that we can see every time. Whenever changes are made, they were open to that. They updated the information on the internet with the changes. They implemented the changes without a problem at all. It's just everything we opt to have on a remodeling company. We had no problems at all, it's just that at the end we've had minor problems. We had few adjustments but they came out very promptly and resolved those issues. One thing that was kind of interesting is that they have the hood for the oven vented outside but take all the steps necessary to determine if that was possible and unfortunately the way the builder designed the house was not possible. So they found an alternative method of doing that and that has worked out very well. So the point there is they were able to come up with an ultimate design and it worked well. Pat Hurst is the main person we've dealt with and he was very professional and just a pleasure to work with. The price is a little bit high but it's just how the saying goes, you get what you pay for. They've gotten back to us very, very promptly every time we call them. They arrived when they said they would and they stayed as long as they had to to complete whatever their objectives were for the day. They were all very courteous. every person.

They were recommended by our neighbors but I have not had any work completed and we had contacted them because we wanted to go in to kitchen remodeling, we just wanted to get ideas and we wanted them to come out and get some measurements and they could get us some ideas and some information. we never had from hem again. but we did not call them back and we had other things that took priority over this. We were sought of disappointed that they never called us back. He was very knowledgeable, very friendly , it was like he knew what he was doing and he was one of the owners and he was giving us some good ideas just fine. The experience was positive but the follow up was not good.

We actually did not contract them. I did talk to them and they were very professional. They put some good ideas out there, but we didn't contract them to do any work. They did an initial inspection and kind of a quote for some construction that we currently is going on. Pat Hurst is the gentleman we dealt with exclusively. Very professional. very nice guy, very courteous, just the work was a little to large for us, and we just found a cheaper alternative. The work they did for us was top notch. They just did the drawings. We did pay them an initial consulting inspection fee, so they actually did do, I guess we did contract them to do some design work. If something came up, I would consult with them.

Dan Hurst came out to our home yesterday afternoon and spent almost 2 hours with us. He was thorough in 'introducing' and explaining what his company can offer us. We are currently looking to remodel our kitchen with the expectation that we will be remodeling the basement and bathrooms within a year. He took the time to hear us out, explain feasibility based on budgets, and answer any questions that we had. Best of all, he explained that Hurst would complete a design for us for the 'whole' home that would allow us to get the kitchen remodel done first, but still take into account our needs (HVAC, Electrical, etc) for other areas of our home (basement, etc). This will assist in keeping costs down for future remodels.
We are planning on meeting with one other design/build firms, but I expect that Hurst will be hard to beat!

Do not bother getting in contact with this company if your project is going to cost less than $15,000. I am not sour towards the company, they can choose to do business however they would like. I estimated my project to be around $10,000 (which I also received 2 other estimates to confirm), and Hurst didn't want to move forward.
Just an FYI for anywhere out there looking!

Overall, my impression of this company is quite negative. If they were not interested in the job, which I had detailed (with approximate size, scope of bench) when I first spoke to Dan on the phone, why did he waste my time (and his) by coming out to my house in the first place? Beyond that, why did he act as though he was going to give me an estimate if he had no intention of doing so, called me back once, buying time, and then not following through at all? It was really irritating to deal with Hurst (Dan). I am under the impression that Hurst Remodeling will feign interest in your business if they do not currently have larger, more lucrative jobs lined up. Of course I am guessing, but I have the distinct feeling that something bigger came along and subsequently I got the cold shoulder because my contract would have not been worth their time. NOT a good way to treat people or run a business. Thankfully, I found someone more local to build the bench and they did an amazing, professional job. We are planning a kitchen remodel in the near future, and guess who's not getting a call? Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time with Hurst Remodeling.

I called Hurst with high hopes from their website. I submitted some basic plans and thoughts that I had. The house is located in a lower middle class neighborhood with the structure and property valued currently at $85,000. Hurst was prompt in responding, and courteous, however that is where my satisfaction ends.

Without even OFFERING to come out to the property they threw back a number of $125,000. If you include the square footage of the kitchen remodel, that comes out to $186 a square foot! I built a brand new custom house back in 2005, at the height of the construction boom and prices, and only paid $112 a square foot, for a NEW custom house with middle to high end materials. Thank goodness I have 3 other contractors that care enough to actually come to the house to choose from.

RESPONSE TO HURST
I cannot believe your response to me was basically that you are and quot;too good for meand quot;. Remember, these people did not even BOTHER to come to the house. Again I reiterate, if you want to overpay for an overpriced service from a company that has a large overhead then Hurst is your company. If you don't like being told they are too good for you than look elsewhere. I wish I could change my rating to an F- now.
Response from Hurst Design Build Remodeling

"We did not perform any work at this property and responded to a request only. The customer inquired about doing a major addition and remodel at his property, he provided us with preliminary plans with a stated project budget of $60,000 to $65,000. The size of the addition is approximately 550 square feet with the majority of the existing first floor living spaces being altered and remodeled, which is approximately 500 square feet. We informed the customer that an appropriate budget for a project of this type would start at $125,000. We have extensive experience with all types of additions and remodeling projects, and perform design and consulting services for many area homeowners. It is widely recognized that adding onto a home and remodeling is not comparable in any way to the costs of new construction; however, we understand it is somewhat of a common misconception. As a professional design/build remodeling firm, we also understand that the high level of quality and service we provide, is not a financial fit for everyone, and is in no way comparable to the average builder’s services. It is normal practice and part of our process to discuss a homeowner’s budget, to ensure it aligns with the project goals in a realistic manner. This can save potential clients both time and needless aggravation as they interview contractors in the hopes to find one that matches their financial needs. We really appreciate the inquiry into our services; however, we recognize we are not a good fit for every project. We wish the customer and his family the very best in all of their future endeavors."

We will not use them. Even though they seem highly professional, they were very slow to respond to our quotation request. It seemed like our project was too small for them to care enough to respond. We had to remind them several times that we wanted a quote. When they finally provided a price, they were the highest and way out of line.

Again, I am sure that they provide a very good product but they seem out of our league and we probably didn't represent enough income for them.
