Neal’s is an amazing company. Everyone we interacted with from the person who gave us the bid to our project manager, carpenters & contractors were on time delivered quality work & no ask was too small. They wanted it to be absolutely perfect for us. We couldn’t be happier with Neals.

I was pleased with Neal’s from beginning to end. The design process was incredible – after our initial conversation they came up with a design that was everything I wanted. The construction phase vent perfectly. The Workers were clean, neat, respectful of our home. There was never any construction mess outside or inside – it was cleaned up every day. The end result was outstanding and I love it every day.

My budget was $20K, told to them up front, their budget was something other than that all along apparently.  The project was over budget in the end despite my best efforts to keep things in line.

I should have bailed right at the start (in hindsight) when their original design came back without the major elements I had indicated were critical to me (large soaking tub and solid surface counters) and in the $30K range with elements they apparently thought important like a large shower, fancy cabinets and a very expensive mirror.  But they had a stellar reputation, had done my parents kitchen a number of years before, so I stuck with them and had them rework the design/cost. +

Up front I had questioned the salesperson/initial representative about payment via credit card.  He assured me that was no problem.  When trying to make the 1st payment Neal's said "we don't accept credit card payment" and even if our guy said we would, we won't.  By that time I was too far in to back out without a substantial loss of $.

The project manager was not very involved or responsive, the subcontractors ran amok.  Billing was a nightmare with me having to fight over every bill due to being charged for services and/or products that weren't delivered.  Besides being over budget they were way over schedule - starting around 4th of July and me without a shower still on Labor Day.

Electric was installed incorrectly even with my requirements IN WRITING to all parties.  Working can lights were discarded and I was forced to buy new ones, 4 can lights were installed instead of 2 (there are enough lights in my small bathroom to make you feel like you are on the surface of the sun and enough switches to run the Starship Enteprise).  Vanity light was broken at delivery and "jerry rigged" instead of returned to Ferguson without anyone telling me until it later failed (before the end of the job) and was jerry rigged again after that instead of re-installed I found out later (when it failed again).  Grout used was wrong color (very light vs. the darker I had picked for the floor).  Caulk is their "fix" of choice when things aren't level/straight.  When I later replaced the old mirrors there were gouges in the walls behind the mirrors.  It took Basco a month to finish the shower - 1st wrong finish, then built backwards, then large scratch on door.

I wish they had just said up front that "your piddly little bathroom is too small a job for us to bother with" -- just been honest and declined.

I'll never hire them again and when asked directly about Neal's I do not recommend them.  I'll give them a "D" score.  I'd like to give them an F but the bathroom is functional, even though it is mostly the bathroom they wanted vs. the one I wanted.  Their actual employee laborers were outstanding workers and the only bright spot of the entire debacle.

Response from Neal's Design Remodel

"[removed member's name], We appreciate you sharing your experience with Neal's and we are always concerned when a client has anything less than an outstanding experience with our company. Ou entire team is very sorry your experience in 2011 was not what you expected. Our design process always includes many changes to incorporate the ideas of both our design staff and the client. We were very happy to be able to get the soaking tub into the space and realize that your initial budget of $20k finished at $26,684 when all the design requirements were met. We do accept credit cards for payment on projects, although we do limit the amount to no more than 10% of the project costs as a rule. Many contractors do not accept them at all, but we find it important. Basco shower doors really did drop the ball on this project when they were given specifications, selections, and field measurements. We are now using Alluring Glass as a supplier due to the poor delivery of what our clients demand for shower doors. It has a big impact on the schedule as well. Our written schedule showed a finish date of 8/19 and Basco pushed final completion back past Labor Day. You should not have to experience this during a project, but we try to make changes to suppliers like this if our clients are not being well served. We happily have taken smaller projects for our entire 43+ years in business. We cannot take every one we look at but will try to take them when we can. Each project is very important to us no matter the size. We will complete about 20 of these projects this year. We are glad you find our field staff a pleasure to work with and wish your entire experience would have been better. Thank you for the opportunity and let me know if you would like to discuss further."

From beginning to end, Neal's is a class act.  The design person (Connie) really knew what she was doing, was well organized, and was fun to work with even though the number of decisions I had to make was at times daunting.  The installation staff were rock solid, always showed up when they said they would, knew their craft well and did all the work exactly as they had promised to do.

Neal's is fabulous!  We've had several projects done by Neal's and they do excellent work.  And now we know they take care of their clients long term! We wouldn't use anyone else for a home project.
