Description of Work: The finish is beautiful but the sanding was very badly done. The floor has ripples and the perimeter sanding was overdone to the extent that there is a noticeable "bevel" at the edges of the floor and around doorways.

Description of Work: Joe installed our hardwood floors in 2006. He has sent his crew back twice to repair the floors. None of the repairs had to do with their work...bad pets on our part. Originally I ordered our bamboo flooring from Simple Floors in San Francisco. Joe picked it up at the truck terminal and held it in his shop until we were ready. The day we closed on the house, he was there with his crew tearing up the old carpeting and prepping the floors for installation. The floors have looked great these past 7 years. Today Jeff arrived and made the necessary repairs. He was prompt and completed the work satisfactorily. I woulda use him again.

Description of Work: I contracted with Finishing Touches to sand/refinish two rooms, patch and repair three areas of existing hardwood and "clean and polish" the hardwood floors in my home. The crew was late on the first day. I had to call to find out when they would arrive. For the next three days they patched and refinished the two rooms we had contracted to complete. A week or so later, I discoverd an area in the dining room where the polyurethane was puddled in the corner and a place where they had sanded an area much more than neecessary, creating a large depression in a prominent doorway. They sent someone to repair the area in the dining room. When I questioned him about the depression, he claimed there was nothing that could be done, because they had patched this section in. The "patch" was floor that was reclaimed from the home. it was the same wood and finish. I have had floors refinished in the past. I know the difference between an issue with a piece being patched in, and the equipment being left in the same place to long. Initially, I felt the quality of the sand/refinish job was acceptable and a good value for my money. Since that time, my opinion changed to mediocre, at best. The work was completed prior to occupancy of the home. The longer we live there, the more issues I discover. When it came time to "clean and polish" the existing hardwoods, I was informed that Joe Sauter's (Owner) brother sub-contracts that portion of the work (first I heard of this). Because we had been completing a great deal of renovation, I took the time to vacuum, dust and clean all the floors in preparation. There were areas along the baseboard and in doorways that were bare wood. This condition was due to the process of removing carpet tack strip. I showed them to Joe and he told me his brother's crew would stain them to match the floor as part of their "clean and polish" job. On first glance, the floors looked pretty good. After more detailed inspection, we discovered that the areas were not stained to match. They were filled with wood putty (not color matched) in a hit or miss fashion. Some areas were filled and not polished. Some areas were polished and not filled. There iwas floor "cleaner/polish" splashed on all the walls. Were it not for the fact I was going to repaint anyway, this would have been a huge issue. I contacted the office and left a voicemail detailing the above. The Owner's brother, Rob, came by to take a look at the work I am dissatisfied with. Rob understood my disappointment, but didn't really offer a solution other than Joey (Owner- Joe Sauter) would call me to schedule time to return to make some improvements once we were more settled in our new home. I have heard nothing further. At this point, the grade for the clean/polish portion of the job is NS (Non Satisfactory). It was over priced and very little provided for what we were charged. After all the prep work we did, we could have cleaned and polished it ourselve for the same finish.

 + -1 moreOverall, just OK. Didn't show up on time the first day. Did perform services as expected, floors looked fine but not the best I've ever seen. When asked for a possible change order, found them to be expensive to change anything, for example several hundred dollars for a requested third coat. When I said no, they then called back and tried to lower the estimate to get the business, but frankly it was a lot cheaper to then just do it myself.

 + -1 moreJoe was aggressive in pursuing the business and flexible in his approach. There were a few times we didn't hear from him for a couple of days and we only learned after the fact that he had been out of town or on vacation. This was an issue which could easily be solved by an out-of-office message to keep customers informed. The installation process went well and the floors look great. There was some scuffing of paint and they generally fixed those problems. The timing of the coating process for the refinished stairs probably could have been handled a little better since we were moving into the house the weekend after the work was completed. It came down to the wire but ultimately worked out OK. I suppose the lesson learned was to have a clearly communicated plan. I do want to emphasize that the floors look really great and Joe's advice was extremely helpful (for example, to use noise-reducing underlayment).

 + -1 moreEstimate requested: rip out floor, install new oak, add on 2 rooms; when he came to give estimate he said wood does not go under the appliance, but the next company confirmed to me that it did, so he was either rushing or not experienced. He had the lowest labor cost of all the companies I got estimates, and since this was an insurance claim I can't get paid for higher quality service; so I guess I will go with them since they had the lowest price, but that earlier comment and some other comments did not convince me that he was the best to do the job. When I do go forward - couple months I will submit a new report on the work to give you a better report. The estimate was provided in a day via email - so that was nice.

 + -1 moreI have really tried to be patient and give this company the benefit of the doubt, as I had heard from neighbors what a great job they do. Contacted them 8 months ago to bid a job, and by the time I got a call back to set up an estimate, I had already contracted the work with another company. Called Finishing Touches again this month to bid another job. Scheduled time for an estimate, took off of work early to get home, and they ended up not being able to make it. Rescheduled, took off from work early again, and they did not show or contact me to let me know they weren't coming. If you're time is valuable, I would not even bother with this company.

 + -1 moreFinishing Touches was by far the most responsive of three companies I contacted for bids. Their bid price was the middle of three I interviewed. They were very accommodating in breaking down individual portions of the quote. We ended up removing the old carpet and pad to save a bit of cost. They helped us pick a stain color which I found very helpful. They applied 3 coats of semi-transparent polyurethane over the stain. The work was performed over 5 days. We are very happy with the color and work performed.
Description of Work: Refinished all hardwood flooring in a house we recently bought. We had not moved in yet, so no furniture had to be moved.
