contacted angi’s, left all needed information. was contacted by steve with A 1 handyman services. told steve what was needed to be done. tear down of existing deck, ramp, and one set of steps. i wanted the deck to be basically like the old deck, the only thing different was i wanted a set of steps where the old ramp had been and instead of lattice trim covering the railing opens on the main deck and railings on both sets of steps to been done with spindles, all materials use was to be pressure treated lumber. steve contacted me after getting my information from angi’s. he came out the next day , measured, took pictures, stayed on his phone getting prices for materials, he was here about 45 minutes. i explained to him if he had all the information he needed he could just send me an email and let me know. he said he had all his information and would finish up and send me an email, he left and within 5 minutes he sent me an email with a bid in the of amount, $1603.00. i spoke with my son and we agreed to use steve, i contacted him and he came out the next day. my son in law came by and was here during steve’s visit. i explained to steve EXACTLY what i wanted done and expected. steve to do. tear down existing deck, ramp, steps, and any and all materials pertaining to the tear down replace with new deck, railings with spindles, 2 sets of steps . he was to use pressure treated lumber. i decided to give steve the contract, he came out two days later. he ask for money up front for materials. i gave him 800.00 cash, he sent me a receipt fir that amount. at that time he and two if his workers tore down the old deck, railings, ramp, steps.he said he would be back the next day, he did not show up, i expected him the following day, he did not show up, i contacted him via txt and email, no response. about 7:00 on the second daly he called, said he missed my calls. he showed up the next day at 1:00 p.m. he brought lumber with him, unloaded it and then knocked on my door. i went outside and spoke with him, he ask me for more money, he just simply didn’t realize how high lumber was! i explained to him he told me while making his bid he was getting prices from lumber companies in the area! what happened? he had no response. i told him i would let him know . before he left that evening i gave him 200:00 cash. at that time he left and didn’t show up for two more days, late afternoons, after 1:00p.m. they tore the existing deck, etc down! but! they had no way of disposing of it and ask me if they could put the wood in the field behind my house, i was appalled! who does something like that! i told him NO! he put it to the side of my garage, did not offer to take care of it when finished the job, now i have to pay to haul it away! i have screws through out my yard where they were dropped and no-one bothered picking them up, i have splinters of wood left, the job was and is a mess!. they brought battery powered tools to use, instead of asking me if they could open my garage and use my electricity to keep their batteries charge, they simply helped themselves and even left their batteries hooked up to electric to charge overnight! they left all their tools/ equipment stored in my garage!! who does this stuff!!! i have so much wrong with my deck. at this point i was a nervous wreck, i would question him as ti why they were doing something a certain way, as cutting off the support post, his response it has to be done that way. the railings are put on with metal holders, but the holders are not properly installed, therefore all the railing is wobbly, i don’t mean a little bit wobbly, i mean when you have your hand on the railing just to support yourself it moves! this isn’t just one of the railings, its all three! i have steps being made level by pieces of small wood! both sets if steps were to be same size, they arent! one set is probably made with 8 inch wide boards and the other ine 6 inch! they look like they were made for a baby to crawl! one set of steps has two pavers under one side of bottom step, the other side has 1 paver under it! the other side of steps is only about six inches wide but they slop backwards! how do you not know you are building steps that a huge slope to them, there is no backsplash in the steps so come slippery weather my feet will slid right thru the steps. the spindles are uneven. the top post that the railings attach to, some have been chopped off and the railing nailed into the top of the post , the nails could not go all the way in so therefore the nails are just hanging out! i have to have my deck redone! i am so disappointed! i would appreciate my money returned, i am a senior citizen i feel because of this there has been an attempt to try and get more money out of and when i was only able to give him 200.00 extra, i should not have been asked for!. i feel it all went downhill from there. i told him the steps were to small, he disregarded that, i said they slope, no step should slope, his response was oh they will settle in, no they won’t for. i feel the bid was fair, everything was explained as throughly and complete as it could be. i would greatly appreciate a full refund so i can replace the deck. !
