They were friendly and they were pretty thorough. They did a lot, having coming back one visit afterwards just to make sure everything was filled up still and working properly. I was not charged for that. I learned about them when I just shopped around basically.
Description of Work: I used Brownie's Independent Transmission about a year ago. We had a complete rebuild of the transmission.

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer XLT RWD with 85k miles. My transmission wasn't shifting at the right time. I wasn't sure if I had a transmission problem or an engine vacuum issue. The car also started shutting completely off when I turned on the cruise control. I took it to Brownie's for a free diagnostic. They called me back and said the were 7-8 codes, even though my check engine light had never gone on, but they'd need to take it apart to know what the problem was. Ben explained that the diagnostic cost $345 for labor to remove, inspect it, and put it back together with new seals. Ben said the cost would be applied toward repair if they found something wrong with it. Ben assured me that they would not do any repair work to the car without calling me back first. On Tuesday of the next week, he called to tell me that it would need to be rebuilt. He told me the price, and I said I wasn't interested. Ben got irate and started yelling at me. Ben was asking what I was going to do with the car, and if I intended to just let it sit and rot. I told him that I had a second vehicle and fixing my explorer wasn't a priority right then. Ben said he'd just go ahead and fix it and let me make payments. I said, "no." I told him that I'd be in to pay him and pick up my car. He said I'd have to have it towed because the parts were in a box. When I asked him why it wasn't put back together, he said it won't go back together. Ben started talking about having to use a hammer to take apart pieces that had welded themselves together. I think if I drive my car in to be inspected, I should be able to drive it back out afterward. When I called around to other shops, they said they'd heard this story about Ben and Brownie's before. They then told me they were sorry about the situation, but wouldn't be able to fix my car because of the liability.
Description of Work: The first performed a "free" diagnostic that took 3 days They called and told me the codes on my computer weren't telling them enough and they'd need to take it out The inspection was supposed to cost $345, but be applied toward repairs Four days later, they called and told me that it would cost $2500 to repair I told them, that I'd just pay for the diagnostic and pick up my car They said my parts are in a box and cannot be put back together unless I pay them $2500

Response from BOBS AUTO SERVICE
We are a member in good standing with the BBB an have been in business since 1957 and operate 5 transmission shops. Her car cam in on 4/13/10, it was checked out on 4/13/10. It had slow and hard engagements in drive and in reverse. The 1-2 shift was very hard and late, the 2-3 shift was hard, the fluid was burnt and the computer scan had multiple transmission codes, gear ratio errors in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th and a tac system forced limited power code. We called her on 4/14/10 and said transmission had internal transmission problems and had to be pulled for internal inspection at $345 which would apply towards repairs. Customer did authorize inspection until 4/16/10 @ 5:38 pm. We then proceeded and pulled the transmission and inspected to find a lot of metal gears stripped off metal parts in the overdrive section of the transmission with OD drum, OD planetary gear, OD sun gear, OD ring gear also needs O/H kit with clutches, 2 bands, servos, solenoid block and torque converter, not to mention fluid, filter and total labor. We called her back on 4/19/10 because of weekend. Customer did not want to repair transmission for $2,314.10 + tax which is an excellent price vs dealership at (over $3,500). We never told her we couldn't put back together but advised not to because of so much damage and could not guarantee would work as it did. We advised to put in box tow to her home and wait until she had the money to fix, to save her money to be pulled out again. Brownies will put back together and install in vehicle if customer requests this. We will also take pictures of the badly damaged stripped gears and planets. Our general manager, Jeff Carter, has called her twice and left a message for her to call back but she has not called back as of yet. This will cost the customer a lot more money if she elects to put all these junk parts back together. Bob Lowry-Owner
