MIDWESTERN PLUMBING SERVICE INC

About us

Back in 1978, Archie Wilson and Gene Hehenmann made the decision to leave their jobs and form a partnership, Midwestern Plumbing Service. In the beginning, it was a small company, not unlike so many start-ups. But they worked hard, getting business that could keep their plumbers busy. Over the years, they built their company along with their reputation as a dependable and competitive contractor focusing on the multi-family and commercial/industrial business.

Good job professionally, but I just remember the bill being what I considered very high. I really don't remember all the circumstances other than that.

The company was responsive but the quality of work varied considerably by which worker appeared that day.

Midwestern Plumbing had contacted several utility companies including the phone company to mark any underground lines or pipes ( I knew this by the orange paint on the grass). While I was there, the crew while grading the side lawn, hit and broke the underground phone line that leads to the house. The crew said they would contact the phone company for it to be repaired. When they were done grading, the lawn had numerous sticks and twigs that needed to be racked and in some areas there was as much as a foot distance between the newly graded lawn and the existing lawn.  A few days later, I contacted Midwestern Plumbing to discuss some issues I had with the work that was performed and was told that they would be there on the following Monday and call me. They never called or came back. A few weeks later, after some rain, I noticed that the water is pooling where it was graded. I contacted Western Plumbing again, and again I was told they would be there within a couple of days to examine the lawn. Once again, they never show-up or called. At this point, I will have it regraded and I will contact the phone company and have the phone line repaired at my own expense.

Problem solved.  I don't think they are the cheapest, but the service was great.

They bid the job to use a pneumatic boring "torpedo" to bore a hole for the line and thereby avoid excavating through the roots of nearby trees, through irrigation lines, and through landscaping. They made it clear that the boring might not work in which case they would revert to excavating at the same cost. The torpedo stopped after boring for about 15 feet. They tried to pull it out and found it was stuck. Based upon the way the torpedo stopped working, it is my opinion that it was defective. They had to dig a hole with a backhoe to find the stuck torpedo. They recovered the torpedo in normal soil, it had not struck a rock or gravel. They then found that the hose was stuck. I asked them to try boring again with another torpedo, but they would not leave the rented pneumatic hose in the ground. They said they had to excavate the rest of the way. It was now the end of the day on Friday, so they had to return on Monday to finish the job. On Monday they brought in a more experienced plumber. He was obviously much more knowledgeable and I believe that he could have made the boring technique work had he been in charge on the first day. He was able to recover their hose and get the copper through the landscaped area with minimal damage. They used a backhoe to trench the remaining 40 feet, which made a very wide trench. A trenching device (Ditch Witch) would have made much less damage, but it appeared that most of their equipment was rented, so they used the backhoe they came with. There was extensive damage to lawn, trees, and irrigation pipes and wiring. Fortunately the landscaping was in the area of the 15 feet that was bored and was mostly spared. They left left marks on the basement wall that will have to be painted over. They had said they would tent the area where the concrete was drilled in the basement, but it was not tented and there was a lot of dust. The plumbing work looked good, but the excavating was a disaster. In addition to the amount paid to Midwest above, there will be about $600 for landscaping and irrigation system repair.

The amount of time delay they had for starting my job was about one week. The interior plumbing drain lines under the basement slab were placed in inconvenient locations that did not coordinate closely with the plumbing fixtures and supply and drain lines. This will lead to inconvenient and awkward placement of plumbing fixtures in the future basement restroom when it is finished. The excavation team and their equipment were pulled off of my job WITHOUT NOTICE in order to respond to a new job with a new client. No one returned to my job, that had open trenches and incomplete work, for over two weeks...this held up other contractors. At one point during construction, the manager had informed me they had 10 employees for 15 jobs...so therefore they were already over committed. After 2 to 3 weeks delay and no response to my phone calls, I terminated the contract and hired another Plumbing Contractor for the interior work. Coincidentally the open trenches were filled the next day.

WOW!!! Water backed up into my basement through a floor drain--I called at 4:45pm on a Friday and someone was at my house by 6:00pm. Brian arrived at my house in uniform and was extremely polite and friendly. He immediately went to work and found the septic pump in my basement was not working. He said the switch probably was shot and in short, the whole pump would have to be replaced for $793.77!!! He said that they could have the pump ready for install on Monday and explained how to avoid another backup. Ken arrived right on time for my 2nd appt and was in uniform and very friendly. After a few minutes, Ken called me to the breaker box and pointed out I had 2 breakers (labeled ''Lights'') tripped. Turns out they were mislabeled and they were really to the septic pump. There was no way for Brian or Ken to have known they were to the pump. Ken fixed a my running toilet quickly and was done! I appreciated the honesty and not getting charged to flip a breaker!!

THEY WERE THE MOST RESPONSIVE TO OUR REQUEST FOR A QUOTE. THEY UNDERSTOOD THE NEED AND HAD DONE THE SAME PROJECT FOR MANY OTHER HOMEOWNERS, AND THEIR PRICE WAS HALF THE PRICE QUOTED BY OTHERS.

THEY CAME OUT PROMPTLY, BUT NEVER SENT A WRITTEN ESTIMATE. I HAVE CALLED THEM SEVERAL TIMES AND ASKED IF THEY EVEN WANTED TO DO THE WORK. THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD GET THE ESTIMATE TO ME, BUT IT WAS NEVER SENT. I ASKED FOR A REFUND FOR THE ESTIMATE ($49), AND THAT WAS NOT SENT EITHER. ESSENTIALLY, AN UNREPUTABLE, UNRESPONSIVE COMPANY. VERY UNHAPPY AND FRUSTRATING SITUATION.
