It went very smoothly. And contrary to what other people said on Angie's List regarding them being expensive, they were nearly half the cost of the other guys we got an estimate from. Primarily, due to the fact the UIC didn't suggest a furnace that was more than we needed. And since it's been in, it has been MUCH better than the old one even when it was working. It keeps the house at constant, consistent temperature. No turning on and off and trying to stay in and around the number you set it on. It's just slow and steady and the house is just perfect.
Description of Work: Our old furnace was on its last legs and they replaced it with newer more efficient model.

Old furnace had to be cut in pieces and carried out up a narrow staircase. Subcontractors did excellent job working four hours on a Sunday night. Installation of new furnace took 3 days (job was complicated); work neat and professional in appearance. Follow-up has been prompt, courteous, helpful.

I was very impressed with the service provided by Unique Indoor Comfort. I called yesterday and set up an appointment to fix a water leak coming from my boiler. The appointment was scheduled for between 10am-12pm the next day (today). Steve C., the technician, arrived at 10:50 - right in the middle of the appointment window. He was very nice and professional. First thing he did was put booties over his shoes so he would not track leaves, dirt, etc. into my home! He assessed the situation and diagnosed the problem as a faulty expansion tank. He did not have a replacement tank with him so he had to go back to the shop and get one. I live very close to where the shop is located and he was back with the tank in about 10 minutes, The entire process took a little over an hour. Including cleaning (vaccuming) the area where the boiler is located. Although I do not have a price comparison for this type of work, I thought the price was reasonable. I hope to not have any additional issues with heat this winter, but if I do, I will most definately call Unique!
Description of Work: Replaced the expansion tank for my Weil / Mclain boiler.

Terrible. The technician was supposed to be at my house between 12PM and 2PM, so I stayed at home from 11:30AM onward. At 2:15PM, no one had come and the company had not called to tell me they were running late. When I called to inquire, I found out the technician was still in Scarsdale and was just leaving, which meant he wouldn't be at my house until 2:45PM at the earliest. He didn't show until 3:00PM because he went to the wrong address. I asked for a discount because I had been waiting for over three hours and no one from Unique had bothered to call me and keep me posted. At first I was told there would be no discount, but once I mentioned Angie's List the manager - Chris, decided to offer me a 15% discount off my bill, which I thought was fair. The job itself went well and I thought the price was reasonable with the 15% discount and Angie's List coupon. Without them, I feel the cost would have been expensive. I was happy with my air conditioner and thought everything was okay until I went to my freezer yesterday and found the technician had mistakenly plugged in an electrical strip instead of plugging in my freezer; both cords had a grounded plug and I guess he was confused. However, I spent a few hours throwing away hundreds of dollars of spoiled food and cleaning out the freezer. I called Chris yesterday and explained the situation about the spoiled food. He immediately started denying that his technician could have made that mistake but said that he would check and get back to me today. Well, he didn't get back to me and I just got off the phone with him after calling him back. He said that someone else must have unplugged the freezer and it was not Unique's responsibility. I told him the freezer has been plugged in since I installed it and his technician was the only one who had a reason to unplug the unit. So, I'm out about $200 in food that I had to throw away and the company is denying any responsibility. I am in the process of looking for a new central air system, but I will not be using Unique.
Description of Work: My central air conditioner wasn't working and the technician bled the line and fixed it. He did a good job, with one exception. He unplugged my freezer to use his machine to drain out the water and never plugged it back in.

Back in 2003, I actually had this company come out and give me and subsequently, my neighbor a quote to install the Unico system in our homes. They quoted both of us $17,000, although my neighbor was 600 square feet larger and they could not provide me an explanation of the price difference. As they touted themselves to being virtualy the only company in town able to do the installation, my neighbor went ahead, but I decided to wait. Fast forward to this past June, I decided to re-visit getting the system and contacted Unique for a quote. Well, although I certainly did not expect the same quote as given in 2003, I certainly was floored to get a now quote of $28K - especially in this economy, but that was the quote and, once again, no explanation given on how they arrived at the price. In any event, I fould out there is another highly able HVAC company that does high velocity installation - Innovative. I went with them at several thousand less and upon comparing the specs of both, got equal or better components

I did call the company directly, as these were company rules and not something the technician was making up. I was told that they do not give the price of their parts but charge an inclusive rate. During this time I had also checked that a capacitor cost's $12.00 which meant even if they wanted to make a 100% profit it would cost $24 and $126 as their labor rate, and don't forget the $89 call out charge. We used the $25 coupon paid the technician $70, thanked him. My husband went out and purchased the capacitor for $9.99 and replaced it himself in 5 minutes. We told the technician, that he should inform his company that their policy of charging by this method was not beneficial to either party. We felt that the $89 diagnostic charge was fair, the time to replace the part all of 5 minutes was totally unfair and had they have given us an amount of $150 as their final cost we would have agreed. $89 + $24 for the part at 100% mark up, and another $37 for what should have been part of the original $89, but given that they don't do that, $37 for labor cost of 5 minutes. Lesson Learnt: Bad business practice, and No we will not use them again. When you hire someone make sure to ask, if their labor and part costs are separated. As otherwise you will be in for a surprise.
Description of Work: The Fan on my furnace had stopped working, I called Unique Indoor Comfort because of their rating on Angie's List and they were offering a $25 discount on their first service call. The Technician was running late, which was fine because someone from the company called and informed me of the delay as well as when he was on his way. The technician was polite and qualified. The charge I had been quoted for the service call was $89, and I had printed their $25 discount coupon. It took the technician all of 5 minutes to tell us that the capacitor needed replacing and he went to his truck to get it. When he returned with it we asked the cost of the part. He told us he would check that after he tested the capacitor. This took another 5 minutes. It was agreed that the capacitor needed replacing. The technician then went to his truck to get us the price. He returned with a price of $239/ which included the $89 and the part. When we asked him what the cost of the part was, he informed us that they did not give the price for the part, just a total price for labor and part. In other words this company was charging $89 for the diagnostic, and then wanted to charge $150 for what took no more than 5 minutes to replace the part. Without knowing what they were charging for the part, we asked them not to change the part. Quite honestly we did not like the way they were charging for the service.

Work went smoothly, workers were clean, careful and performed quality work. The same two technicians did the work all week long. The work took five days, David the supervisor came at least once often twice a day. Workers cleaned up after job each day leaving little for us to do, we had minimal cleanup. The air conditioning is wonderful, quite, and comfortable. High velocity air conditioning is a little more noisy than conventional air but it cools better.
Description of Work: Installed high velocity air conditioning system on first floor and conventional air conditioning on the second floor. Work included installation of air handlers, compressors and ductwork.

Representative giving the quote was knowledgeable. The price was more than we wanted to spend, but really our only option, since we had no space to build soffits & run traditional ducting. The system installers were VERY clean (almost wouldn't have known they were ever there), and it took about 3 days. After the system install, the communication broke down a bit, because we didn't realize that after the system install, and a separate hookup (and bill) by an electrician, there was STILL another house call to actually get it running, called the "startup.". This ended up having to be rescheduled because I had no idea it would take so long and I was missing work. We also didn't feel like we got enough instruction on how to use the system, program the thermostat, and change the air filter. But overall, it has been great, and so far the house is being cooled nicely. The noise of the vents blowing is a bit louder than traditional central air, but nothing like window units!
Description of Work: Install complete high velocity air conditioning system in a 1928 two-story home. (Air handler in attic, 4" diameter flexible ducting from there to all rooms via the wall cavity with 2 - 3 vents in each room, a condenser outside, coolant line up to air handler, electrostatic air purifier / air filter at air return, all wiring, and programmable thermostat.)

I woke up without hot water. My wife and I are both sick with sinus infections, and our 6 month old, has a bronchial infection. Not having hot water was a nightmare! I called Unique because they had worked on my AC once before. They came right out. The tech looked at my hot water tank, quickly figured it was the valve. He called his office to get a price on the valve,$750. $750 for a $100 piece. wow. Then says, I might as well just change the tank, for around 1400. (hot water tanks are roughly $400, so a thousand dollars for 2 hours of work... wow.) He told me the valve would take about three days before they could install it, the new tank they could probably do the next day. I feel like they recognized I was in a jam, and really tried to capitalize on that. The hot water tank is being installed by someone else today, for 700 labor and material. I understand business is business and we all need to make a profit, and everyone has overhead, but I feel like that price was way high.
Description of Work: They came out and looked at my hot water tank, charged me 89$ for the call, they didn't do any work.

They were able to do the work very efficiently and more attractively at about 10,000 dollars less than any or the other companies I had taken bids from. They did a very good job all around. We moved into our house a year ago. We had window units only and didn't want to go through another summer without central air. I spoke with one contractor who could install the conventional system that uses the large air ducts. The price was somewhere around $6500. Sounds good but because my house's structure was a little funky, there would be a problem getting air down to the lower level in several rooms and there would be soffits built around the ducts. Why bother? I therefore did research on high velocity Unico systems that use smaller snake like ducts that are easy to get into just about any wall with not being very invasive. I called four unico system approved contractors to come give me quotes, one being Unique Indoor Comfort. Unique was the first quote. They were very professional and punctual to the minute. We dealt with a salesman who was very personable and not pushy at all. The others came and went. After speaking with Unique, two of the other three contractors were scary. They didn't have the experience installing many of these systems, and you could tell. We called Unique back again after speaking to these other characters and ending up hiring Unique. They were excellent. The salesman monitored the whole job. It was done in 3 days, minimal mess. If there were any problems, there was no hesitation to make it right. Our summer in our home has been very comfortable, no more swelling doors. I am very pleased with their service and product. I would highly recommend them!

I called around Monday to find a contractor to check on my central air unit that was not blowing cold air during the crazy heat wave we were having. I was going to be out of town until Thurs. and they were the only ones who thought they could make it on Fri. as they were all very busy. When I didn't receive a call back on Tues. I called again and talked to another guy that didn't seem to know what was going on and couldn't find a record of me calling. Don't think he normally took care of this stuff because on Thurs. they called me and confirmed they could be there Fri. afternoon. To that point I could only get a Monday appt with Robison. On Friday around 4:30pm the office called and said their technician had just finished a job nearby and was on his way. 15 minutes later he showed up. He was clean and courteous. Found the problem quickly and pointed it out to me, describing how it worked and what was wrong. He replaced the wire that had been ripped out of the condenser. He gave it an overall inspection, added refrigerant and then went into the attic to check on the air handling unit. He was careful about walking through the house. After fixing the problem and routine maintenance he tested the unit to make sure it was functioning properly. He took his time and was not in a rush to get in and get out, especially that I was his last appt. of the day.
Description of Work: My central A/C was not blowing cold air. Technician came out and discovered the low voltage wire from the air handling unit to the condenser outside had been pulled out of the condenser probably from either one of the landscapers who take care of the grounds each week or by the window installation guys that put in my new windows right near the condenser. He replaced the wire taped it along one of the large tubes so that it would be much more difficult for that to happen again. He also need my yearly routine maintenance on the unit including adding refrigerant. He then tested the unit to make sure it was now in working order.

The company is very professional. From the initial visit to the workers, to follow up, we were very pleased with the service. I have seen the larger wall mounted units in other older homes and didn't care for them too much. But these small vents are unobtrusive. I had held off from putting in central air because I didn't think pipes could be snaked through our plaster and lathe walls. This company knew what to do. There was minimal mess and drilling. There was one problem that came up. We had loose fiberglass insulation in the attic and the workers carried it with them as they went in and out of the attic. They tried to be careful but this stuff got everywhere. When I called to complain, the salesperson came right over and offered to pay for cleanup and a stay in a hotel, if that would make us feel better. We accepted the cleanup reimbursement. I was very happy with this company.
Description of Work: They installed air conditioning for our home. Because our home is over 100 years old, they suggested two systems, one for the 2 upper levels and a smaller unit for the lower basement level. The main unit was installed in our attic, which is just a crawl space. Pipes were snaked through the walls and the AC vents are unobtrusive, white, round disks that fit over the openings in the ceiling, 2- 3 for each room. The smaller unit is wall mounted and a lot larger than just vent openings. It heats as well as cools.

A job like this just is not cheap, It's not. They did a good job though. They put in a system that works and they were really good about cleaning up after themselves. The entire job took only about a week I would say and we are pleased with the work they have done to date. We have no complaints and I'd have to give them all A's when it comes right down to it. You get what you pay for with this type of job I think.
Description of Work: This company specializes in older house air conditioner installation. For us, they put in narrow tubes and pumped it through at high speeds through those tubes into our home. We had already put a similar system in the downstairs of our home so this company just installed a new system in the upper two floors and including the electric fees, our bill came to $16,000.

I discovered my a/c was no longer working on a particularly hot and humid day. Despite calling everybody on the List as well as in the phone book, Russ was the only one able to come by for an assessment within the week. He was very friendly and professional, and he made it a special point to answer all my questions. When installation day came, he (and his laborers) spent a lot of time teaching me (at my request) about the mechanics and engineering of air conditioners as they removed the old unit and put in the new one. They left the basement cleaner than it was before they arrived, and stayed on the property until we were all convinced that the a/c was working properly without any leaks.
Description of Work: They removed my old (non-functioning) A/C & furnace, and replaced it with a new model. In replacing the units, they also re-did some of the exhaust ductwork of the new furnace as well as the connecting ducts from a second furnace.

They specialize in installing central air in old homes with radiators just like my home. I had some reservations when dealing with the sales person, but everything worked out great. The installers showed up on time, were as neat as they could be protecting my carpet, and got the job done quickly. I thought the price was a bit high, but was worth it for the quality of work. I'd use them again and recommend them to others!
Description of Work: They installed a Unico air duct system for me and did a very good job.
