Our kitten had initially part of a TNR plan. But, she was 8 weeks old when trapped so why put her out. With treatment for Giardia under way and roundworms, we thought her diarrhea was under control. While giving her metronidazole my wife noticed the roof of her mouth was white. Since it was late Saturday, she brought her here. She was not playing as well.
This is a hospital like The Animal Medical Center in NYC. A resident examined her and took her in the back for blood work. Once the results were in that she was in need of a transfusion, they gave us an estimate of one day's bill in the hospital of $1050. It was live or die. So, we agreed to the treatment.
This hospital does type and screen it's blood. There are 2 different cat blood types. A or B. They told us that most hospitals do not do this as B is rarer. And cross matching adds to the cost. By doing this extra step if she needs a transfusion in the future, she can get it without developing antibodies.
They kept her over night. When I called the next day they said she had improved energetically but was not eating. She had IV fluid. The tests for feline aids and leukemia were negative. She was still on IV fluids. About 11 pm the next night my wife went to see her to give her sardines, which we had used to catch her. They took my wife right into the ICU. When they took her out of the cage, this feral kitten looked at my wife as if to say, "Where were you." Then she ate the cat food they had in the cage for her. She never needed the sardines. The cages were not bared either. They were solid stainless. My wife noticed the staff dumped any soiled cat litter right away and put out a new disposable litter tray.
Everyday the doctors were very accessible. They called to talk about diagnostic tests and to give new cost estimates before doing any further testing. She was discharged a new kitty. She is the sweetest cat. We're so grateful for their expert care.
