They were extremely nice people. They couldn't have been nicer, everyone of them. We would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: He relayed a retaining wall that was made out of stone and then he took out bricks under the front of our porch and laid them back again in beautiful condition. Also, inside the porch, he reset some bricks that came loose. There were about 3 or 4 men working, it wasn't just him. They were constantly working and hardly took a break. When they were finished they cleaned up everything beautifully. They also did extra work and didn't charge anything for it.

Excellently...George came out to give me an estimate. Honestly I thought it was high for what he listed. Originally George said they would 'spot point' the chimney. The crew arrived exactly when they said....turned out they ground out the mortar and repointed the whole chimney, gave it the once over...caulked where needed and even used old bricks to assimilate the look of my old chimney. So what they actually did the price was great.

This goes back a few months and I meant to write this a long time ago... I'll try to remember specifics. The communication was great. The estimate was no nonsense and very matter of fact, which I like for any type of repair work. George came out and explained what they intended to do for the price and didn't try to inflate the price by performing repairs that weren't deemed necessary. I actually thought the problem was bigger than it was. He seemed trustworthy so we had the work done. We need some more brickwork done in the future and do plan on contacting them for that to get an estimate, too. They came out to do the repair within a few days of me accepting the proposal and were here and gone by the time I got home. The only observation I'll make - and in all fairness didn't realize it right away and never contacted them, so, never gave them a chance to respond - was that whatever concrete/mortar they mixed was done in my yard and some was spilled and left to dry leaving a very hard spot right in the area my kids play. My yard is NOT in great shape and it was less than 10" in diameter. They also left a thin masonry trowel behind in the yard that is actually quite pointy (which I still have lying around somewhere and you can have back!). Oh, I forgot one thing so updating. I totally forgot that the chimney cap was attached to the chimney crooked, too. I guess that is my only real "complaint". I never really look up there and just noticed it again after thinking about this review. That actually should be fixed. Overall a good experience and would recommend.

George was very responsive to my initial phone call and subsequent calls and did what I believe was a thorough assessment of my chimney in spite of my rickety ladder, narrow hatch and lack of an attic floor. He took time to go over his assessment with me. He made an effort to fit my job in very quickly. He listened to my concerns about debris falling on top of the plaster ceilings and made a point of having the guys doing the work address those concerns before they started. The guys who came to do the work, Mike and Brian, were friendly, polite, professional and neat. My only concern afterwards was the thoroughness of the job considering the price. Two workers used 3.5 bags of concrete and were in and out in 1.75 hours (including a cigarette break and other downtime for one of the workers) for $900 plus tax. When I asked, they said didn't smooth or sponge down the mortar afterwards because it was an attic and it would have taken a lot more time and bags of concrete to do so and it wasn't necessary. It's true that George had come out once for the estimate and a second time to pick up the check and introduce Mike and Brian so that time has to be considered. Nonetheless, I think they probably could have done a more thorough job for that price or charged less for the job that they did. Also, I noticed after I uploaded this review originally, that the chimney support board, which George had said was holding up my slanted chimney in the attic and therefore wouldn't be removed, not only had been removed but was not put back and was just lying on my attic joists after the workers had left.
Description of Work: Scraped down loose brick and mortar and resurfaced (parged) a six foot length of chimney in the attic.

There were four men onsite for the duration of the job; they arrived promptly in the morning and finished ahead of schedule. Bill Miles himself was there--and he chose to flare the chimney at the top (the original chimney had straight sides) so that it would more effectively shed water--a great idea that should prolong the life of the chimney. I got an estimate from another firm--and that estimate was lower. However, the other firm would have sent out a two-man crew and would not have finished the job as quickly. The rep from Bill Miles also spent much more time looking at the job, even borrowing a ladder so he could go up on the roof for a closer look. (The man from the other firm just eyeballed the chimney from the ground--he didn't get up close.) I was also pleased that they were meticulous, draping tarps on the roof to keep stray mortar off the shingles, and raking the yard thoroughly. One of the men also went into the basement to clean out the ash and broken tile that fell to the bottom of the chimney as they worked.

George came out and gave an estimate. Very punctual, courteous, and professional. The job was scheduled and they did the job on the arranged day. I was out of town that day. The restored chimney looks great! Also, upon inspection I found no construction debris (even below, in my gutters) and my plants beneath my chimney were in their original excellent condition.
Description of Work: Bill Miles Custom Masonry replaced the cap on my chimney. Also below the cap, they replaced 9-11 layers of bricks that were dislodged by years of weathering.

This was a fantastic experience! This company and crew is professional and genuinely concerned about providing the highest level of customer service and satisfaction. This started right off the bat with the initial communication. I left a message and my call was returned within 2 hours and had a very pleasant conversation with George (who does the estimates and scheduling) and we set our estimate appointment. He was 30 minutes early for the appt. which was a pleasant surprise! He made measurements and effectively communicated with me what I wanted done and offered realistic options to meet my needs. He provided an immediate estimate on professional letterhead. Upon contacting five other companies for estimates with three no calls returned and one who gave me an estimate on the back of a business card I was more than happy to call George back and give them the work. Again, he quickly returned my call and set an appointment (which he was 30 minutes early to again) to sign paperwork, set a start date and receive deposit. The crew came on time on the scheduled work date with a five or six man crew. They were very consciencous as to protect my new asphalt walkway and yard. They got right to work and worked steadily all day. This was a large job with a lot of labor. The crew would check in with me periodically to ensure I was satisfied with how the different aspects of the job were proceeding. They finished the job and did an excellent job cleaning up the jobsite. They were eager to make sure I was satisfied with the finished job and clean up. I can not say enough positive things about working with Bill Miles Masonry from start to finish. I would recommend them to anyone without hesitation.

George got back to me immediately when I called for an estimate and came out the next day. I got several estimates from other masonry companies and they were all around $1600 so I felt the price was fair. He was the only person who actually got on his back and looked up the inside of the chimney with a flashlight, and assured me that the inside of the chimney is in working order. His crew showed up on time, completed the job in a few hours, and thoroughly cleaned up after themselves. The chimney looks great.

This provider was recommended to me by Angie's List customer service. I need masonry work done and Angie's List had a 'deal' at the time. Unfortunately the provider of the 'deal' did not do (or want to do) that type of repair. Angie's List was very helpful in putting me in contact with Bill Miles. I met with the technician and got an estimate and arranged for the repair. Bottom line is the repairs were made in a timely fashion . In addition he painted the rails to make both sides match (nice touch). I gave a "B" on the price as this was my first masonry repair of this nature. I did not get estimates from others to compare. The price could have been more or less than others. In hindsight I feel confident that I got good value. I have discovered (from the past) that the cheapest price is not always the best price.

Bill Miles and crew showed up morning T 7:30 am and worked till 4 or 5. They even worked weekends. This was a huge job and the crew worked very hard to get it done. Owners Bil and George were at the site everyday to ensure that that work was being done correctly and professionally. Their pricing was reasonable and their work guaranteed. I would definitely use them again and would recommend them to anyone. Thanks Bill and George!

Description of Work: Fixed chimney , pointed up some other brick work area and painted pergola
This was quite a pleasant contractor experience from beginning to end. I contacted Bill Miles Masonry electronically through Angie's List and received a same-day response and follow up call from George to arrange an estimate for some exterior chimney repair. George arrived early, thought I needed significantly less work than other estimates I had gotten, and provided a written estimate. When I called a few days later to schedule the work, George was able to do the job within a few days. The job itself involved repairing the chimney from the roof line up to address several spalling bricks, repairing the concrete chimney cap, and repairing the chimney shoulder that had cracked. George and his crew of 3 guys named Mike arrived on time, were very friendly, and got right to work, completing the job in the estimated time of 3 hours. The "Mike's" were unbelievably good. They were courteous, professional, and cleaned up meticulously. These guys went above and beyond, doing some additional brick work beyond what the contract stated without any additional charge. It was clear to me that they took exceptional pride in the work they performed. The chimney looks great too. Any fears I had about the repairs not matching were totally unfounded. I'm glad I hired them and would use them again. They said what they'd do in writing, at a price, and then overdelivered.

My telephone inquiry received a same day response from George, the very personable fellow who performed the estimate on the job. He answered my questions and made an appointment for the very next day to examine the proposed work and produce an estimate. My availability was not good for that day, but it was graciously accommodated. George arrived on time and ready to go. He carefully examined the problem to be addressed and did not rush that process. He took the time to answer all my questions and ensure I understood the scope of the work. On the spot, he issued his estimate and a written work agreement. He told me that the work would at least be started the next morning. The next morning at 9 a.m., George arrived with a two man crew. Introductions were made all around. The work to be done was discussed again and confirmed. George gave me the good news that his crew would complete the entire job in one day. The company's insurance agent promptly e-mailed to me the Certificate of Insurance. By mid-afternoon, the job was completed and the entire work site put into good order. The crew guys were friendly, diligent in their work and respectful of my home and property. From my perspective, this job could not have gone faster or better.
Description of Work: Repaired a crack in the brick foundation under my residence. Working from the inside, the cracked area accessible in the basement was cleaned and cleared of old mortar. The area was re-pointed. Working from the outside, the land adjacent to the cracked area was dug out, cleaned, the old mortar cleared away, and the brick re-pointed. The entire area parged and foam insulation added. The hole was filled and cosmetic work was done above ground to blend the repaired area with the balance of the surrounding foundation. The work site was then cleaned up and left in very good condition.

This work was performed over 2 days. Removing a concrete slab on the first day and pouring a new slab on the second day. Communication from Bill Miles Custom Masonry was excellent from the time they came to provide an estimate thru completion of the work. They had a sufficient number of workers to do the job. The workers were as neat as they could be considering that this job required using a jack hammer to remove the existing slab and pouring a new slab. We are more than satisfied with the work that was performed.

Bill and his crew really overdelivered. When we had purchased the house, there was an old window a/c unit installed in the basement through the foundation that was at some point ducted up to the kitchen. We wanted this gone and blocked up. We also had a lot of spots along the foundation that needed repointing. Finally, our stairs had worn down along the steps and were uneven, and the sides of the stairs were flaking off. Pros: 1) I was originally told by George (who provided the estimate) that the textured blocks originally used were no longer available, and that the blocks being installed would be flat. I was OK with that, but during repairs they slapped some extra mud over the new blocks and textured it to blend in very nicely. 2) They went around the entire house when pointing, including areas that are not usually seen due to fencing. Similar quotes from other companies did not include these sections. 3) I was expecting the stairs to be patched up and at least passable. Instead, they had completely resurfaced the entire area, making the whole thing look brand new. Cons: 1) When signing the contract, George asked for 50% down. Not unreasonable, but I was not told that at the time of the estimate, so I was a little unprepared for it. 2) His crew left while the concrete was curing. I understood there wasn't anything for them to do during this time anyway, but they left without letting us know or if they would be returning. 3) Bill returned to the house to finish texturing the stairs, but was there very late while my wife was trying to get our baby to sleep. However, once I told him about the baby he did quiet down, and I do appreciate his dedication to seeing it complete. I'm also giving him a pass on this due to weather: It was rainy and unseasonably cool, which makes the concrete take longer to set (Bill told me a longer cure also makes it stronger). Bottom line: Before the work was started, I was embarrassed at the condition of our stairs and having an unsightly air conditioner in the foundation. I now have a beautiful set of stairs that are a lot safer, and a nice clean basement wall instead of an eyesore.

Our chimney was falling apart and we knew that something had to be done. It had been re pointed a couple of times since we bought the house, but it kept falling apart. The contractor arrived on time for our and quot;consultation;and quot; he was very knowledgeable and told us where the problem was, which made a lot of sense. He then took a look at our crumbling garage wall and recommended repairs. All the work was done very well, quickly, neatly, and with courtesy. We have an older home and the size brick we have is no longer standard size. The contractor was able to mix and match, old and new brick - it's seamless! We have more work for this guys - anytime they want to come back!
