1. I called Cooney based on Angies list ratings. I spoke to Mark who was the dispatcher. They would not come to look at my furnace unless I give them my credit card before they come. Mark said they demand payment for every job before they arrive, or while their tech is there. They don’t send you a bill unless you want to fill out a credit application. The attitude I got on the phone was one of distrust and maybe even despise of the customer.
2. Against my better judgment I gave my credit card and after two days waiting with no heat, they sent a tech out who checked the furnace and said it would only cost $200.00 to fix it. I said fine, fix it.
3. When my credit card statement came, and their invoice in the mail, they had charged me $320.76.
4. When I called about this error Mark disputed it saying that I was the one in error and I knew it was $300. After checking with the owner, the dispatcher said he would refund only $50.00. It took 18 days and two follow up calls to get that refunded.
5. Six days after Cooneys tech came, and replaced some parts, the furnace quit again with the same problem it had before they showed up the first time. I called expecting them to do what reputable companies do- I expected them to warranty their work. Mark said they don’t do that. Only the part is covered but the labor was my responsibility and Mark demanded a credit card before coming to check it on warranty. I specifically recall having the dispatcher tell me how amazing their technicians were, and how they go through every single component of the system to be certain that they won’t have to come back. As a person who believes that businesses deserve to make a profit, I understand they have to mark up the parts they sell you. I also thought they did this to compensate for the rare times when they had to replace a warranty part to cover their labor. Well, not Cooney. If you get a new part from them and it is bad even one single day later, their policy is to charge you to switch it with a good part. I would not agree to these terms had I known ahead of time but there is a lot that Mark won’t tell you when he is smoothly selling you on how great his company is.
6. After having the discussions with Mark and feeling that I was not being treated fairly I decided
to stop doing business with Cooney and called another contractor. The second contractor found the heat
anticipator setting was wrong, and the cause of my furnace problems. It just so happens to be that I had bumped the setting on the heat anticipator on the thermostat while the cover was off and I was painting (caught it with the roller handle some how). I did that in June and the problem showed up on the first call for heat on September 25th 2013. The second technician said that the parts Cooney put in were not necessary and the cause all along was the heat anticipator setting.
7. The furnace quit again a week later. I called the second Technician who came back and at no charge soldered the wires of the parts that Cooney put in, because they were wire nutted improperly and loosely.
8. I have had no problems since then which would be approximately 8 months from the time I am writing this to the time this happened. I’ve had no time to write this review until now.
9. When I expressed to Mark at Cooney that I felt they were not treating me fairly and I said I would be reviewing them on Angies list, he said that they have 40 positive reviews on there and he did not need my review and that one bad review meant nothing to him and he did not care. One issue worthy of mention is that Cooney said they spent 2 hours (verified by truck gps) at my house. My tenant who was home and actually signed the paid invoice which I have an original copy, said they were only inside for 45 minutes and she knew that because she had to leave for work. What I wonder was if the tech sat in the van in my driveway since I was not there to watch them. When I brought this to the dispatcher’s attention, he said that I was wrong. In fact, every issue I pointed out to Mark the dispatcher resulted in him telling me how he was right and I was wrong.
10. All in all Cooney took my money in the total sum of $270.00 and did not provide one single cent of value or service for me. I’m not sure how the owner of the company feels about this, as I can not verify that the dispatcher actually spoke with the owner about this issue or told the owner the truth. I felt so frustrated about this that I no longer was interested in speaking to anyone at the company. The times I asked Mark to let me talk to the owner, I was told that they were not available. So it was not worth my time to keep calling when I felt I was clearly being railroaded.
11. I had several red flags going off in dealing with Cooney, but I let the Angies list ratings over ride my better judgment; a lesson learned the hard way. I will take Angies list with a grain of salt from now on.
The workers were wonderful. They were very clean and put walk mats down were they would be walking through the house. The installation was done by factory trained technicians. Everything was explained to us in detail. After the job was completed they did a complete walk through with us and explained the new system to us. We are very happy to say the least with the work and the Carrier furnace that was installed in our home. There is much more to heating and cooling a home than just buying a furnace and air conditioner, we now have the correct size furnace and air flow going through our house and we feel very secure in our heating system and with Cooney for the professional job done.
We met Ron late October for an on-site inspection of the existing heating system and again the following afternoon at the Cooney office to review his proposal. We approved his recommendations and agreed on the start date. The installation both started and completed on schedule and the basement was left in immaculate condition. The final cost was exactly as quoted with the exception of the upgraded Internet connected Thermostats I requested.
The people at Cooney are professionals who know their business, which is comforting when you’re 2000 miles away. I would also like to compliment Rob, the installer; he is an artist with copper tubing!
