Negatives: Had a few issues with weekly service before the main event (see below). One issue involved our pool not circulating right after service. We had them out to problem-solve and they determined the pool was not circulating due to a failure to backwash after the prior service (I was charged for the weekly service as well as the 'fix').
Main event: I decided to check the chemical levels of our pool since I started to feel like my arms were itchy/burning after using the pool. Test strips showed everything to be in order except chlorine, which was at least at 10ppm (maybe more; the test strips wouldn't go any higher).. According to the test kit and Google, pools should generally be kept btwn 1-3ppm, and you should never swim in anything over 6. 10ppm is the level you put in for a shock treatment, where they leave you a notice saying 'hey - don't swim here for a day or two.' (This was normal service; not a shock treatment.).
Panicked, I contacted customer service to let them know, and ask how this could possibly have happened. No serious response other than and quot;test strips might be inaccurateand quot; or and quot;we'll be sure to lower chlorine levels next time,and quot; and and quot;you mainly have to be concerned about low levels of chlorine; not high levels.and quot;
- They did not immediately have management call me. (I had to request it 4-5 days after the fact)
- They did not immediately offer to have someone out to double check the chlorine content with their own equipment.
Concerned that the test strips might indeed have been inaccurate (and frankly, hopeful), I purchased an expensive Taylor test kit, to do a full-on chemical analysis of the pool, and confirmed that in fact that the strips were accurate.
At this point I cancelled service, requested credit for the unusable pool, and asked to speak to management. Management called, and to their credit apologized. However -- they still offered no explanation of how it could have happened (simply offering the analogy to sports, and quot;sometimes we hit things out of the park and sometimes we don't -- in this case I guess we didn't,) and seemed a bit unconcerned about the idea that high chlorine levels could be harmful.
Conversation went something like,
and quot;Hey -- our chlorine levels were at 10ppm or more; that's hazardous to human health.and quot;
and quot;Very sorry.. not sure how that could have happened. The guy that did your pool is our most requested guy. He's our main go-to chemical guy. Really friendly; always comes in with a smile. We never get complaints about his pools.and quot;
and quot;I'm sure very few people check their chemical levels when they pay for weekly service.and quot;
and quot;Well his pools are always sparkling. People *request* the guy since his pools sparkle so much and never ever turn green.and quot;
and quot;Don't you think the reason they don't turn green and sparkle so much is because he's putting hazardous levels of chlorine in them?and quot;
and quot;You know, you really just need to be concerned about when a pool turns green; that's when it's dangerous. Higher levels of chlorine really are just going to burn your eyes.and quot;
and quot;Actually - you can get a chemical burn from swimming in high levels of chlorine, and I personally had arms that felt like they were on fire for a few days. You guys are dealing with hazardous chemicals here.and quot;
So yeah. They did apologize; they offered a $200 credit (which I personally found low). And I'm just hopeful there's no long term damage.
TLDR: Chlorine levels were at levels hazardous to human health; didn't feel management responded quickly enough or seemed to think it was a serious issue.
Did not know how to maintain a salt water pool. Lots of problems with weekly service. The last straw was when they forgot to turn the system on after servicing while we were on vacation and we came home to a green pool right before Labor Day weekend. It took several calls to get the to remove the service cost to fix the algae problem, but they never removed the charges for the chemicals.
"I just noticed this post dated : January 19, 2014 – Work Completed Date: October 15, 2011. At first sight I thought this comment current, however it is from an event over two years ago. I searched our history and would like to share the following history as a response. We built Mr. Rogers pool and put it into service in the spring of ’07. The first three years of service (2007 – 2009) consisted of a Spring Pool Opening, an Initial Cleaning and a Winter Pool Closing each year, the Rogers did weekly maintenance. The fourth year of service (2010) consisted of a Spring Opening, an initial Cleaning and a Winter Pool Closing. That year he requested Weekly Valet Service. The Chlorine Generator/Salt cell had intermittent issues. We cleaned the cell at no charge. The fifth year of service (2011) consisted of a Spring Opening, an initial Cleaning and a Winter Pool Closing. That year he also requested Weekly Valet Service. Chlorine Generator/Salt cell continued with intermittent issues. We again cleaned the cell at no charge and discussed the issues with Mr. Rogers. We quoted the cost of a new cell. Mr. Rogers asked if there was another manufacturer. We quoted another manufacturer and installed the new unit. There were no other known issues once the unit was replaced. Summary: 2007 – 2009 normal open, initial cleaning and pool closing. No known issues. 2010 – 2011 normal open, initial cleaning and pool closing. Added weekly Valet Service. Chlorine Generator/Salt cell had intermittent issues in the fourth year of service. Chlorine Generator/Salt cell continued with intermittent issues in the fifth year of service. Quoted a new unit, replaced the intermittent unit with another manufacturer; problem resolves. Regarding the green pool – we never charged for the cleanup. Regarding “extra chemicals”. The chemicals used in 2011 were on par with the prior year usage. Regarding service calls 2007-2011; 6 in total 3 covered under warranty, 3 cell cleanings at no charge. Regarding Mr. Roger’s statement: “Did not know how to maintain a salt water pool. Lots of problems with weekly service.” The problem was a failing unit at the end of its normal life expectancy. Once the unit was replaced the problem resolved."
