He was pretty good.  His price was very good for the work involved.  The prices that I got from other painters were 50% more or double.  The work quality was good; I wouldn’t say it was museum quality, but it was good.  He was scrupulously honest.  His superintendent was excellent.  The paint quality was not that great, but the overall experience was great.  If I weren’t looking for museum quality of work, I would use them again.

Making the initial appointment was very difficult, he kept saying he would call me back, but never did. After several calls to him, I got an appointment. Day of appointment comes around, no calls from them and they didn't show up. I called and made another appointment, and again they didn't show up. They have promised me a refund which I am waiting on.

They did come when they said they were going to and they did return my phone calls.  After they removed the wallpaper (which, understandably, is a messy job), there were little bits of leftover paper on the walls and floor.  They did not remove the adhesive from the walls, just the paper.  I had a painter come to give an estimate on painting the walls where the wallpaper had been taken down and he mentioned to me that they did not remove the adhesive from the walls, just the paper.  They sent 2 guys for the work, but he didn't do much work and disappeared after he helped move some furniture away from the walls.  I would never use these people again or recommend them to anyone.
Response from Adler Painting & Papering Inc

"For one day Big Deal contract, our company removed grasscloth paper from a large living room, dining area, and hallway. We were pleased with the result. There was no additional time to further prepare the walls. Needless to say, we were surprised to read the customer's report. We contacted the customer and discussed the report. The customer hired us for an additional day, and paid in full. She promised to revise her Angie's List comments. We're disappointed that it hasn't happened."

While I was pleased with the work, and the value, I was not so impressed with the arrangement of the appointment.  I spoke with the owner with whom I set up a time for a couple of weeks hence. During that period, one of employees of the company called me on two different occasions once to set up an appointment (which I already had) and the second time to confirm an appointment for a day and time other than had been agreed to.  I finally called the owner back and he said he would take care of it.

When the day arrived, the workers were about an hour and a half late, although they did call at some point to let me know they were on their way.

Once here they were extremely professional and industrious.  I had not expected they would do such extensive plastering once the wall paper off, but they worked the full four hours and did a terrific job. Given the time factor, the plaster was still wet and I obvioiusly did not expect them to leave it perfectly ready for painting.

I would certainly hire them again for wallpaper removal, even if it was not a 'special'

I purchased the $199 "big deal" via Angie's list, and I characterize the experience under the classic warning "If the price seems too good to be true, it is indeed too good to be true".  Here are the key points of my experience:

-they are based in Manhattan, and apparently do not know Brooklyn well.  I had left a message that I wanted the work performed at my mother-in-law's home, and provided the address.  They showed up at my house instead (late). I then had to provide them directions via cellphone to my mother-in-law's house.  They were supposed to start at 10.00, but after all this confusion they showed up at 12.00

-the advertisement for this special deal promises 8 man-hours of work, but they were done by 2.30 PM or so (5 man-hours) and the work was not as promised. Specifically, there was still some glue residue on the walls AND they did not sand or spackle at all.

-For $199, I can't complain too much.  Although the work was not done as advertised, it was "fair", given the price.  I would not say that I got a "deal".

-I would not recommend this deal if you are outside Manhattan.  I think part of the reason there work was rushed was that they had to commute from and back to Manhattan for a $199 job.

I needed 20 year-old wallpaper removed from one large room, 15 x 20 ... a horrible job for a novice and one that would take days for a DIYer to do before wall prep could even be started.  Adler's man, Hugo, came on time (early), never took a break that we could see, ensured that all the surrounding areas, especially our hardwood floors were protected, removed, cleaned and spackled the walls in the alloted time.  Nothing was left undone or under-done.  We could begin painting immediately.  Mr Adler kept in constant touch with us and followed up immediately after Hugo left.  Excellent service and a tremendous value.

I bought an Angie's List Deal with this company.  I tried for months to schedule.  My first call I was told the owner was on vacation and he'd call when he returned.  I did not get a call until days after he was to have called.  In that call, he explained he was busy and could he perform work after Labor day.  We agreed he'd call Sept.6.  I never got the call.  I called on Sept. 7 and explained I wanted the work done Sept. 13.  I was told that was fine and that I'd get a call back that day.  Never happened!  I was called on Sept. 12 and told that they couldn't do the work the next day!  Frustrated, I requested a refund.  I wish he would have gotten to the point and told me he was too busy to do the work instead I waited months!  I would not hire this company--if he can't call when he says, he may not show up for the job!

Mr. Adler and his assistant were on time.

They were neat, clean and cooperative. They were obviously well experienced in this type of work and performed the job well. Mr. Adler at our request gave us professional advice concerning various painting jobs we may undertake in the future.

The wallpaper stripping took more time than the eight man hours we paid for under the Angie's list special deal. Nevertheless they did not charge us for this extra time, which they had the option to do under the terms of the deal.

We were very satisfied with this service.

Very professional but, they left all the garbage and upon inspection after there was wallpaper glue residue that remained and the compound patching was not sanded thoroughly. So the price was good but it was not ready for painting.

"We did the maximum under the terms of the deal. Our policy is to take the garbage out with us. If it wasn't done, we apologize."

estimate was professional and on time.  Price was competitive with other estimates.  The big draw was that they could start pretty much right away.  Unfortunately, the first attempt missed some key areas that I asked them to paint.  However, to their credit, they came back and completed the job right away.  The worst part of the experience was dealing with Ron Adler himself when wanting to get paid.  I hadn't heard from him for quite some time after the job was done.  I called him and left him a message saying that I didn't know what the remaining amount was and hadn't received a bill.  I got a call a couple of days later with Ron yelling at me and accusing me of trying to cheat him.  The truth was that even though he knew that I was no longer living in the apartment, he had mailed the bill there.  I obviously hadn't received it, yet he still tried to accuse me of trying to cheat him.  I mailed him the remaining amount and never received an apology for his unprofessional behavior.

"If a customer intends to withhold payment until receiving paint material receipt, please let us know before we start. Raising ones voice to a customer is wrong. If it sounded that way, we apologize."

This was a painter I had met 20 years ago but refound on Angie's list.  He lives in the neighborhood of the job.  His bid was very professional and clear-- we added on some floor work and a tiny bit of general contracting to the original painting contract.  Ron gave us a start date, and the crew showed up ready to work that morning.  The crew consisted of two men and a supervisor who was frequently on the scene.   He was also professional, careful and easy to deal with.  The job was in fact bigger than expected, but the company respected its original estimate.  The crew helped move heavy furniture out of the rooms and back in after the job was done.  The work was done neatly and very well, with only one day beyond the estimated time frame.  The apartment building staff commented how impressed they were  that the crew was always on time, quiet, and undemanding. The crew were always pleasant and accommodating-- no surly or defensive behavior, but just very helpful.  Would definitely use this company again.

The price was fine. They weren?t very clear about when I was getting the estimate. They didn?t include in the estimate that the walls had to be primed. So it ended up being an additional $500. It was the first time I was doing wallpapering and I wasn?t aware of it. The guy ended being kind of rude with us and there was a little bit of frustration in the beginning. In the end, it was fine. The attitude was not very professional in my opinion. I probably wouldn?t use them again. The work was done well and they had been in business for a long time.

I had received quotes from 3 companies. The prices of all the 3 were more or less the same. Perhaps Adler?s price was about $2000 less than the company I decided to use. They had no experience doing the kind of work that I needed to get done. Once I figured that out, I decided not to use them. However, they were very responsive and very good. They showed up and gave me a proposal about 2 or 3 days after they came here. In fact, their proposal came first.

This company was fantastic. From the second I reached out to them throughout the painting process, they were professional, quick, responsive and organized. I have a young baby at home and they made recommendations regarding which paints to use that were quite helpful. In addition, I have a very difficult co-op board and Ron Adler helped navigate through that. Also, they were able to book within two weeks of my initial phone call - which was important. I could not be more thrilled with the results of the work.
