After looking at the old furnace (and the fact that repair was impractical), a "comfort expert" came and assessed the situation, which ultimately ended with me signing a contract for them to remove the old furnace and install a new Lennox SLP. (They are owned by Lennox so you won't be presented with any other options, fyi.)
Lennox systems have a lot of mixed reviews -some reportedly work great, others reportedly are total junk, so I also bought a 10 year warrenty and maintenance plan so I wouldn't have to worry about repair charges if needed.
I also asked the comfort specialist to set me up for a duct cleaning, which hadn't been done since we bought our house 8 years ago. He looked around, and said that would be no problem. Turns out it was - I probably wouldn't have gone forward if he had told me then that the asbestos tape around my ducts prevented them from doing the vent cleaning, but he didn't. In fact, they didn't tell me about the duct tape until after the installation had begun - this is after the initial serviceman, their comfort expert, and the three installers came in and looked around. (News to me: asbestos tape is white and was wrapped around the ducts connections to prevent air escape. If you have asbestos tape on your system, you first have to have those professionally removed before you can clean or install new ductwork.) (It would be nice if Angie's list has some asbestos remover reviews...)
On the day of the install, I was told to expect them by 9am, and they weren't there. I had to call to ask where they were: I was told they were on the way and they finally showed up around 10:30am. Three guys showed up. They did a great and very professional job with the installation itself: everything looks good and appears to be running ok, and the return they installed looks fine too. They definately know what they're doing technically. A+ for that. Also, they do all the paperwork for you to get a rebate from National Grid ($500), which was a big help and very much appreciated.
Problems: as mentioned above, they only told me about the asbestos tape after they started work. I really wish I'd known about that because now I have a new system with old and dirty ductwork. Kind of defeats the purpose and is the reason I gave them C's instead of B's.
Other complaints are mostly just minor giping: sure, use my bathroom, but could you at least put the soap back in the soapdish instead of putting it on a shelf that had to be cleaned afterwards? Also, I told them I was working from home, so the first thing they do is bring in a boom box and start it up - never once asked if was ok. I had to move upstairs to use the phone because of this. Lucky for me I actually like Pix106, but I think the hard rock and metal music might've been a bit too much for other folks. Also, they made zero effort to minimize whistling, shouting, singing. I'm all for a fun workplace, but I'd be more respectful when I'm in a person's home. Petty stuff, perhaps, but I was expecting more considering all the hype on their website about their professionalism.
Finally, the whole idea was to improve air quality, but as part of the install, I am told they spray the furnace with linseed oil to prevent rusting. They said the smell (very strong) would dissipate in a few hours but it's still strong 2 full days later. The night of the install, it was so strong all our eyes were burning and watering - I wish I had known about this or been warned beforehand. It is getting better but you might want to consider spending at least the first night after an install in a hotel or something.
I was pleased with this company and will use them again in the future.
I was a customer for three years. Not anymore.
