We spent everything we had and then some to Allied Construction. The work that was done good, looks good, but the bad work has us worried! We're still multiple Plumbing leaks as of 12/1/14.
Watch out! If you don't have any experience with remodeling contractors you will get taken advantage of by Allied Construction. Unfortunately, we were clearly taken advantage of and Tom Catsaros capitalized on everything and anything we didn't have experience with. I was overwhelmed at times by these guys. Tom gave us a very small budgeted amount of money in the total price to get supplies for the job. It's not realistic unless you want your bath to look like it was done out of Walmart! We spent over double the allotted amount which was $1200 per bathroom and the price total for each bathroom was $6,300.
At first you feel like you can trust Tom because he's very soft spoken, but once the problems start, everything changes. We needed some guidance and advice along the way but it was not genuinely offered and he was never around after day 1. I can understand if things are going smoothly, but we started running into issues with the worker doing the bathrooms and also with Tom's recommended bath & kitchen supplier, Express kitchen & Stone in Lindenhurst.
Price started out great, but what Tom conveniently never told us is that NO PLUMBING costs were included in the price. When I told him I would definitely need some plumbing upgrades his response was, and I quote, "Most houses, the plumbing is ok, right?" That was it, never brought it up again and never warned me it was NOT included in the contract price.
He also wanted a whopping $350.00 for a pre hung bathroom door installed. Last time I checked the door was part of the BATHROOM! There were so many problems on this job I couldn't possibly list everything here. Would take too long and I'm too stressed and burnt out to do it. Heres most of it.
1. Tom never showed up to check on his crew after the first day. They were here for 2 weeks. His main guy is Chrsitian, who did some nice work in my kitchen and had a few minor errors and a plumbing leak that was not addressed. He did do some really good things though. I wanted this to be a great experience and would love nothing more than to give a total thumbs up, but it was very shaky, including a little bit of an attitude problem with these guys. It was not always professional.
I made an enormous amount of trips to Lowe's, Home depot, and Tom's recommended place, Express Kitchen & Stone in Lindenhurst. Tom claims? " I've never gotten a complaint about them"
WARNING: If you decide to provide the materials for the job yourself, DON'T go to Express Kitchen & Stone in Lindenhurst! You'll be sorry! They're not easy to deal with! Supplying everything yourself also has it's disadvantages which were capitalized on by Allied Construction! Don't expect them to happily guide u along, they will not! They rushed and confused us at times. Seemed like the more they could get me out of the house, the better they liked it.
2. Allied Construction left the place a mess and used my living room for their trash and damaged the leg on my dining room table. Tom never did a thing to address it. Totally blew me off about it. They left huge chunks of grout & sheetrock on my patio, it's embedded in the concrete and all over my garden hose. It's all over the place! Sawdust piles, trash etc. they left the place a filthy mess! They left grout & sheetrock all over the floor outside my 1st floor bathroom and in front of our entry door too. They never covered the floors properly. Theres grout & sheetrock all over my new vinyl flooring. The carpet on my stairs got destroyed as well. Not covered properly.
Tom's main bathroom installer (David) was very shaky!
3. 1st floor Bathroom mirror was hung too low, Light bar was hung too high. Never addressed. The lever used to fill tub for a bath fell off the first night job was allegedly finished. Was later addressed and fixed by Giovanni. Great guy and professional. Unfortunately, he was not part of crew working on our projects.
4. 1st floor bathroom cabinet was installed too low and it was the wrong size. Tom recommended Express Kitchen in Lindenhurst to get my cabinets, tile supplies, etc. They gave me a 12" deep Kitchen wall cab instead of a 7" deep Bath wall cab. Express kitchen in Lindenhurst was it's own separate nightmare! Cabinet had to be removed and the wall had to be fixed and repainted. Should've never been hung in the first place. I was never notified by David and I was home at that time. He just threw it up on the wall!
David didn't always ask me where I wanted things installed and he did more than a few things WRONG, including the bathroom door saddle (1st floor). He needed to put an additional row of floor tile to make it fit right but never did it. I had to get an additional vinyl floor saddle to go next to the door saddle. He said I bought the wrong size - He was WRONG, I bought the right size. He didn't insatall the floor tile correctly and blamed me, Looks terrible! To add more insult, he never put anything on the additional saddle to keep it flat to the floor. I had to do it myself with full paint cans. He just slapped some glue on it and threw it down. It was half off when he left for the day.
5. Anything and everything that needed plumbing work done, leaked and leaked and leaked! David could not sweat a pipe right and many of the fittings had to be repeatedly worked on to stop leaks. It took 3 times for him to get it right and in some cases an outside crew (Giovanni) had to come back to address what he couldn't fix. I paid extra for all the plumbing and had to haggle with Tom about everything! He Nickel & Dimed us to DEATH! Language barrier with David was uncomfortable at times as well. After a few days the head crewman Christian, disappeared. I guess he was on other jobs? I was stuck there with David and a younger kid for most of the 2nd week.
David convinced us that we didn't need a light bar over the sink mirror in 1st floor bathroom. I paid To $300.00 to have 2 recessed lights put in ceiling. He was WRONG! When you looked in the mirror, it was dark with shadows without the light bar! Then Tom nailed me to have a light bar installed after the fact! ($100.00) David installed it WRONG (too high)
7. Kitchen cabinets ordered from Express Kitchen were AWFUL quality and were returned. Upon returning them, the people at Express Kitchen were highly irritated and kept $80.00 bucks of my money after I dropped about 4 grand on supplies there! Terrible customer service, heavy language barrier, and very poor attitude! I went to Lowes and got decent quality kitchen cabs for the money with no issues. Sure sorry that I didn't do everything through Home Depot or Lowes,. I trusted Tom Katsaros... too late now.
7. Kitchen wall next to side door of house was scratched and there's a huge gouge in the floor moulding after the stove was reinstalled. Never addressed.
8. Floor saddle in kitchen was never sealed down properly after new floor tile was installed. Never addressed.
9. Under cabinet light in Kitchen was screwed in so far that the screws came right through bottom of cabinet. Never addressed.
10. The office where my wife and I keep our important papers was a constant worry when we were not present in the house. There was damage to the door frame that needed repairing but I didn't get it fixed before the job with Allied started (Didn't have the time). I expressed to Tom and Christian that I was not comfortable leaving my home with David and a few others in there. One day when I came back from making a trip to Lowes I saw David leaving the ar
