Once they finally communicated with me and things finally got started it went smoothly.  The fellows working on the project were very nice, friendly and answered any questions I may have had.  We really do enjoy the Windows and being able to now open them to get a breeze through out the house........Fine job Done!!!
One item I am still not too pleased about is the bathroom exhaust cap they put on the roof.   In my opinion it is a cheap flimsy aluminum cap and when it rains and or is windy it is constantly "flipping" and noisy.......at first water was dripping into the house from it, but the Company send a guy out who just put some caulking on to weigh down the flap.  Even though there is no water coming in at the moment, it still makes a lot of noise when it rains or is windy....not good since this bathroom is right near the bedrooms!!
At the end of this project, they normally do another Energy Efficiency Audit and the results basically did not change, which is what I had expected.

Response from Ivy Lea Construction

"Member, I am glad to see you were able to take advantage of the free home energy audit, that is paid for by NYSERDA. Nice to see you home was realativily effiecient for a home that is 60 years old. Sorry it took so long to get your windows in. Our old window manufator was a victom of the recession. Quite a shame, since they were in bussiness for over 50 years. I was glad to hear once the new windows were ordered they were installed quickly. So happy to hear the fellows working on your project were very nice and friendly and answered all your questions."

The project went very well.  They were able to start a little sooner than expected and the project went smoothly.  When the supplier let us down by delivering the wrong vanity top and sink, Ivy Lea swung into action.  I did not need to worry about a thing - they handled any controversy with the supplier.  All I had to do was pick out another top.  Even in that, Dan remembered how I had admired a glass vanity top and persuaded me to "just go look" at what could be done.  I'm so glad he did.  The counter I had made is just gorgeous.  Although we had a bit of a delay waiting for the new vanity top, the project ended beautifully.

"Member, So happy to hear your new bathroom is beutiful. Thank you so much for your confidence in Ivy Lea again. This is the second bathroom that we have installed fro you. So glad to hear that your project ran smoothly. I was sorry to hear there was the small delay getting the proper counter top installed at your home, but I think the wait was worth it. The new top looks awesome!! Really nice selection. You did a great job here. I had my doubts about the glass counter top, but that is something that I will recommend in the future for some of our clients who are lookign for something a little different. So very NICE!!! Thanks again. As always please give Ivy Lea a call for any of your home improvements. Mike Washington Pres. Ivy Lea Construction."

They did all from big projects to small projects. They are very professional. I don’t feel the least uncomfortable having them there. They really know what they are doing. I will know upfront what they are going to do. There is no uneasiness or anything about working with them. They are really good workers and they clean up themselves after they have finished their work.

First experience with a roofing contractor and felt good about the transaction. Price was a bit on the high side for the work that was done, however, I feel that it was money well spent. Everyone from Ivy Lea was wonderful to work with and highly professional. All my phone calls were returned promptly, questions were answered and I felt good about the process. Work commenced quickly after the contract was signed and I couldn't be happier with the result. I returned home from work everyday to a debris free home. The project took 3 days to complete (roofing), 1 day to complete (glass enclosure removal) and a few extra days for painting of outside shingles. Roof looks beautiful and my difficult to please father (who has done many roofs in his time) went up there and inspected everything after they were finished. He was impressed!

Only snag that occurred was on the first day of the job. Within 20 minutes of leaving my house, I received a call saying that my chimney needed extensive repairs and was provided with photos of the issues. These photos were taken on approximately 3 weeks before my roof job started and a mason had visited my home to look at the chimney the Friday before work commenced (I hadn't inquired about any chimney work so I found this odd). So, the phone call I received was to inform me of these chimney issues (even though they were discovered 3 weeks prior) and to give me an estimate on how much this additional work would cost (Approx. 7,000 dollars). I knew the chimney was an issue, but did not wish to address it at this time. I wish they wouldn't have "sprung" this extra work on me once they had already started the project. It felt a little like I was being "trapped" into giving the go ahead for more work. I am hopeful that this wasn't the intent and that I just misconstrued everything because honestly they were awesome to work with. I just wish they would've let me know that they were having a mason evaluate my chimney in advance. The chimney estimate took 20 minutes to obtain (because mason had visited on Friday) while the roof estimate took over 2 weeks to draw up and get to me (they said due to Buffalo Home Show).

Overall, extremely happy and would highly recommend.

After requesting estimates from 4 contractors, Scott from Ivy Lea was the first I had come out and the last to respond. I had to contact him after 2 1/2 weeks to see if he was still interested in quoting the job. I felt like the job was to small for him to bother with.

Estimate was for some framing and drywall around recently installed ducting for A/C. The estimate was approximately $3500 and took three weeks to receive. I found the price to be significantly more than expected and the turn around time for getting the estimate to be unacceptable. I was able to get the work completed for $850 by another party.

I understand that Ivy Lea is a respected company in the area and perhaps this project was just too small to really be worth their time. Since they are a larger contracting firm, it may be that their overhead makes small projects feel really over priced. I was still shocked by the price because I'm sure the cost of materials for this project is relatively small.

My bigger issue was the time it took to receive the estimate. It was a small job and I would have expected a response within a week at the most. This was a bigger indicator to me that the company wasn't interested in my business.

Called/contacted them back in late September after putting off work that needed to be done for quite sometime.

John Washington (estimator/owner) came out promptly and we went over what I needed done. John explained what work was going to be performed, made some basic measurements and told me he would put an estimate together. Asked me if I had any questions and answered them to my satisfaction.

Estimate arrived a week later. It mistakenly omitted the roof returns on one side of the house. Contacted John and he adjusted the contract to include them. He said he would and send out an updated contract. Which he did.

The estimate was not on the low side, but the work to be done was the 'right' way rather than cheeping out and getting so-so work. I'd rather it be done right then pay again for it to be done right. The old adage of "you get what you pay for" applies here.

They arrived to do the job a few days before the contract stated it would begin. Of course they called me ahead of time to let me know.

Two days of work. Ladders/scaffolding used was placed out of the way at end of work day. Work site was always cleaned/tidied up when getting home.

They followed up to find out if the work done was satisfactory. It was.

Not the cheapest contractor, but definitely one of the better ones. Want the job done right?? You would be remiss to at least not give them the chance to do the work and/or give you an estimate.

I'll be using them in the future without question.

The repairs were minor in nature and the estimate came in at almost $1,000.  I opted to not have the work done by them but rather to hire an independent handyman, at a future date, to do or (help me do) the jobs. The jobs included a bit of bathroom flooring repair, a door entryway tread repair and a dryer hose exit port upgraded.
Response from Ivy Lea Construction

"Member, I see that you had us out to supply a proposal for a few small projects at your home. Thanks for the opportunity to come out and consult on your project. "Thank you for your feedback. I see back in August of 2011 we installed a new rubber roof on your front dormer. I also see that we installed some trim also. This works has a 8 year limited labor warranty. I see when you reported on your experience with Ivy Lea Construction in Oct we scored all A's across the board, and at that time you had mentioned that we were very customer service oriented. I understand that there was a small leak at your home after a heavy rain in Nov. I am glad to hear we were able to get to this inspect the leak pronto and our representative was punctual, professional, and pleasant. One of our foreman came to inspect the problem and we discovered that water was entering your home on the front upper dormer brick work. We sent out an estimate was to tuck point the entire front dormer, not just the front of the dormer. We do not provide a limited labor warranty on any brick tuck pointing or any repair work. The only way we could give out a 2 yr warranty is if we changed out all this brick work. This is cost prohibitive and not needed, the other main problem with this brick you currently have on your home is that is is a concrete brick that is no longer made. If we tuck pointed the existing brick work and installed siding over this brick we would be able to give you a two year limited labor warranty. This is the only way we would be able to offer you a labor warranty to stop the leak from coming back. I also inspected all the pictures of your old roof that was removed. It was a rolled roofing product with several seams that was in poor condition before we installed a EPDM Rubber roof with no seams. You needed a new roof, you might also have needed tuck pointing on your brick also. I am sorry if our original rep didn't give you an estimate for these repairs originally. I wish you would have given us a call to discuss any questions you might have had. I don't think you were stupid at all, I believe you already corrected one problem you had and you just need to correct a smaller problem on the brick work now. If you would to discuss different options or to get clarification on the work we have already proposed please don't hesitate to give us a call. Thanks again for your feed back. Mike Washington, Pres. ivy Lea Construction, Inc,."

It went very well.  They started when they said they would and finished on time.  I had the same two carpenter/handymen in my house every day; they brought in an electrician and a plumber as needed. They were very neat and clean.  My upstairs neighbor commented that she would hardly have known they were there except that she could hear the work going on.

All of the work seems to be beautifully finished.  Of course, one can never be totally sure that there's nothing hidden that will cause a problem later, but everything seems perfect so far.
