Description of Work: I have an old, seldom used, portable Singer sewing machine. A gear broke and the bobbin thread wasn't catching. I could have bought a new machine for the cost of the repair but my current machine is quite heavy duty so I decided to go through with the repair. Crown is an old-fashioned repair shop with folks who know what they're doing.

Description of Work: One of the last remaining old-time fix-it shops in Manhattan. I have been bringing them broken vacuum cleaners, etc. for years, and they have always brought them back to life. Most recently it was a malfunctioning sewing machine, a model that is no longer made. The shop looks cramped and chaotic, with cartons of appliances piled on ceiling-high shelves and covering the floor except for a narrow pathway that ends at a desk. If you are lucky, the guy behind the desk is the one who listens closely to your problem, goes into "the back" to see if he has the parts, and reassures you that he can solve it.(If you are not lucky you may get the guy who communicates in grunts, but your appliance will get fixed anyway.) If it's beyond hope, they'll sell you a replacement from their stock, which is surprisingly large and varied. They give you a ticket for your item and tell you when to come back for it. When you do, bring cash, because they don't take plastic. (I am not sure, but I think they have recently graduated to checks.) It looks like a dump but they know their stuff. I hope they are around forever. I can't comment on prices because I have nothing to compare them with.

Description of Work: I phoned Crown Machine Services to get an estemate for replacing the cord of my Toastmaster toaster and was informed that Crown MachineServices DOES NOT REPLACE SUCH INSIGNIFICANT ITEMS AS AN ELECTRIC CORD FOR TOASTERS. They MIGHT perform this service for a long time client!

Description of Work: They are a neightborhood store and can and will fix anything. They are a valuable resource. I have used them to repair vacuums, TVs and VCRs. Nothing is supposed to be fixed these days so it is very hard for them to get parts; however, they persist. It took them more than a month to get a part for an older TV but I was in no hurry and I am pleased with the result.

 + 2 moreThere were 2 vacuum cleaners and one of them was a collector's item because it was 40 years old. Neither was working. They cleaned them and I don't know precisely what it was they did, but they did an excellent job. They were first rate. Then I found out that they do a lot of other things besides, so I had them restore an old floor lamp again about 40 years old and a table lamp that was probably more than 50 years old. They got my Cuisinart which I bought in the 80s going and working perfectly. They are excellent and they really know what they are doing. Not only did they do a good job but they are lovely people to deal with. I don't know about their price because I have no way of comparing prices. The quality of work was the best because the appliances are working beautifully and as I said they are old. I have used them again and I am about to have them check out my air conditioners.
