Description of Work: Poor Quality of workmanship and poor quality of product used in entire roofing & Soffit cover. Had to replace the CAP that goes over the venting pipe due to the ribber dried out and broke apart. Had to get it fixed in order to prevent rain and snow going in the hole. Roof is leaking by the Chimney and had to get it fixed by someone else (paid from my pocket). Soffit is not well supported. Now it is hanging. Called during Christmas time, but secretary said someone will call back in new year. Now its New Year and 2 months and no Phone call. I was even ready to pay the labor/parts for repairing the soffit, but I have yet to hear from J & A. Very disappointed.

Description of Work: Had to continually call to fix a leak. When they did come the man spent all of 10 minutes and each time said it was fixed! It still leaks same place. He also said they pay workers off the books but that was then. If that's true, that means those people weren't insured. Had other roofers for other jobs and nobody would come fix anything . Are they all the same? Very discouraging because anyone we ever had to do roof does not honor their contract except to give u the bill!

Response from J & A Roofing Company Inc
[Member Name Removed] we specialize in installing new roofs. We stay away from repairing roofs that were not installed by us because as soon as we show up and touch the roof we are taking responsibility for someone else's work. As far as paying the workers off the books and not carrying insurance this is simply not true. This review is very misleading being we never installed a roof for you. You called us to repair your roof that you had someone else install. My recommendation would be to call them to stand behind their work as my family has been doing for over 75 years for homeowners in the Hudson Valley.

Description of Work: They promised to complete the job in one day, with quality materials, and they promised to leave the property in the same conditions as when they arrived. They began at 7:30 promptly and the job was complete by 2:30. I still have yet to find a single nail or piece of shingle on my property. Excellent job! Truly. Highly recommended. And they offered the best price of all I considered. Bravo.

I was always leaning toward Jand A, since I had used them before, but they were also the lowest of the 4 estimates I got. I dealt with Nate Horowitz, who is the son of the person who sold me the roof I was replacing (30 years ago). Nate was knowledgeable, and pleasant to deal with. They were on the job about a week after I signed the contract, and it took 2 days to complete. I think they would have started sooner, but I needed chimney work done first by another contractor. Nate stopped by both days to see how the job was going, and to drop off material. To do the above work on our house is fairly complex. It is a big 2 story house with a steep pitch roof, a wrap around porch, side porch, and a dormer. The garage is a typical 2 car garage. The crew worked almost non-stop the 2 days they were here. They did a pretty good job of protecting our house from the enormous amount of debris falling around it when the old roof was removed, but there were instances of debris hitting the house. There are also problems with the gutters after they were re-installed, and some other minor issues. They did a great job of cleaning up all the debris (2 dumpsters full). I talked with Nate this morning, and went over the issues I had in the aftermath of the job (I am very particular). He listened to what I had to say, and said it would be taken care of, most of it this week. I didn't get a lot of excuses or push back, just willingness to make the customer happy. That is why I marked the overall experience and quality as excellent. With a big job, there is always going to be some issues, but its how the company resolves them that makes the difference. I think that is the importance of picking an old, established, family- run business like Jand A. I'll make updates to this review as time goes by, if there is anything to report.
Description of Work: Removed existing roofing down to wood decking from house and garage. This involved removing 1 layer of wood shakes, and 2 layers of asphalt shingles. Installed new plywood over entire house. installed ice and water barrier, roofing felt, new edge moldings, and new Owens Corning Trudefinition Duration lifetime shingles on house and garage. Installed new copper chimney flashing and new neoprene vent pipe flashing on house. Re-installed gutters.

This project went really well and the quality of work was excellent. I wanted to use them for another project of mine and they came out to take a look, but they will not return my calls or even give me an estimate after taking a look. I feel like they do not want to take on a smaller project like the one I have now.
Description of Work: I had J & A come to install some hardy board I had already purchased. It was hard to locate someone to do this because they wanted to supply the materials, so I was very happy when they came out to do this project for me.

the representative sat down with us and went over the estimate in great detail He was extremely pleasant and there was no pressure. . He sent us a copy on the computer that we could add or change any details that we wanted. The workmen arrived exactly on the day promised and started early. Everyone on the crew was polite and friendly. They worked through the day and finished the entire large roof by 6:PM. I was amazed by how efficiently they worked. they had all the right tools and materials. One of the workmen came to the door when they finished. When they left everything had been cleaned up, all the debris was gone. They even willingly removed a tree branch that was brushing the roof/ We were very pleased!
Description of Work: They cleared off two layers of roofing shingles, repaired damaged wood, installed a new ridge vent, new flashing around all roof vents. Then put on ice shielding and new architectural shingles. They put in new gutter hangers on all existing gutters

We needed a new roof. Ours is fairly large and we were concerned about the cost. Nate came out to the house, took a look and gave us a detailed estimate in writing. We looked into other roofers and contractors. The estimate we were given by Jand A was very fair. We looked into another reference in our area and Jand A came highly recommended. In a couple of weeks, work began. The workers were very promp, efficient, curteous and professional. They arrived promptly at 7 am. and worked steadily til 7 in the evening. The old roof was removed and the new one was put on. During the day Nate was here checking on things. The men did a very good clean up all around the house. The work came out beautiful. We would certainly recommend them to family or friends in the future. Excellent job. Thank you.
Description of Work: We needed a new roof. It's been over 20 years since our last one.

i HATED THE DUMPSTER SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY.......ALL WEEKEND LONG ! ! ! ! ! I called the J and A Office at 2:30pm and requested removal of the dumpster, but apparently, no one got the message, or ignored it ?
Description of Work: Complete New Roof on my house. (approx. 1100 square foot house. 3 bedroom ranch with 200 square foot rear "florida room". They ( 6 workers ) arrived at 8:00am, removed two layers of old shingles by 8:50 am. They applied two rows of ice and water barrier (6 feet high up the roof ). Installed a new chimney flashing, special coating on the flat roof, all new drip edge, cleaned up, and were driving away by 2:30 pm. I must confess that the roof has a very shallow slope and no dormers or skylights. Almost forgot....they also installed a new ridge vent, which had never been there before. The cost of the dumpster was included in the price. DON'T:..... schedule the job on a FRIDAY....or the dumpster will sit in your driveway.......ALL.....WEEKEND.....LONG. What an ......UGLY....THING ! ! ! ! !

Upon calling, the owner came quickly, went over everything they would do. I asked about snow/ice coming down onto the porch as we have an uncovered one. They told us they use these plastic "snow stoppers" and told us where they had installed them, and that they had been at that place for 15 years. We thought the price quote was high, but felt it would be a once-in-a-lifetime installation, so we signed contract. We heat our house with a wood stove, and there is a stack that comes out onto the roof. The roof itself seemed to have been installed, but when I looked at how they did roofing around circular stack, I was apalled. I thought it was just an underlayment of sorts, since there were just square pieces of roofing lying around randomly a round stack. They did take it out and redid it, but still not aesthetically pleasing. We told them to put a lot of "snow stoppers" along one side of the house as it is mostly porch and where we enter house, and what is not porch, we store the wood for winter. I came home one day and they had put double row of snow stoppers, but spaced far apart, and only went over area above porch. I called, they said we told them only to do that part. I said, "No way, that's where we store out wood and we need to be able to get at it and not have it covered with an entire roof's worth of snow. By this time we had paid them in total, so they did not come out, even after many phone calls. The first winter every single snow stopper except one came off the roof, and two people narrowly missed being hurt by snow/ice sliding off roof onto them. Most days I could not open the door when the snow came down off roof -- which was quite frequent as there was nothing to hold it up there. I continued calling the company, they kept promising but telling me I had to pay for the other section of the house where porch ended. I finally said I would, figuring how much could it be. It took me FIVE years to get them here, even after almost 100 phone calls. They finally came, I told them to put the snow stoppers close to each other. They told me they would pay for only ten, I would have to pay for rest. I said OK as winters had been horrid dealing with the snow sliding off roof. They only installed TEN extra guards and charged me over $300. I waited a month and sure enough, they called for payment. I sent in a $100 payment. A month later I received another call that they wanted my money. Naturally I paid it in total, but will never use that company again, nor will I refer them to anyone.
Description of Work: Small log cabin, 1100 sq. ft., needed a metal roof. Living in a very rural area, there were few companies that installed metal roofs.

Within 6-8 months, I noticed a brown water stain growing around the chimney in the living room, which vents through the chimney, where the new flashing? is/was?? The roof leaked!, Up in the attic crawl space, I took pictures of water running down the exposed chimney from the roof. I called J&A to please come back and look at this. There was a big water stain growing around the chimney, where the new flashing was supposed to have been installed and there was a small black mold beginning to grow. J&A did return within the year and did 'something to the roof' and pounded in nails in the molding around the chimney in the living room.. which was now crooked. However the water stain around the chimney grew larger and larger, including signs of mold. I took J&A to court in Kingston because they would not return to fix their 'fixes' and because mold is dangerous to health, when left in a house. I called in outside people to come to fix the roof and the ceiling. They fixed the leak around the flashing and removed the ceiling where the brown stain and signs of mold were appearing. The replaced the ceiling around the chimney in the living room and painted the whole ceiling. I applied to my insurance company for reimbursement of this additional cost. When I took J&A to court in Kingston they wanted to settle out of court, and I like good dumbo, let them for just the price of the additional work. It turned out that I had to reimburse my insurance company for the cost they had reimbursed me, so I was left in the whole. In the meantime, over the next years, the gutter coverings, which appeared to be strangely askew, and which were meant to collect the water from the roof and divert it down the drains, worked poorly. The corner of the house, where the drain appeared to collect water, appeared to be washing out the soil and causing a big hole at the corner of the house. I thought this was curious.. but recently with the help of someone looking at the gutters, discovered that they were full and the gutter covers had been placed over filled with twigs and leaves gutters. It was impossible that they could divert any water down the the proper channels. The water washing over the roof was washing out the soil around the back lower level of the house. This was shocking. PICTURES INCLUDED. I did call and left a message at J&A, but in over a week, they have not returned my call. Did I expect this? I would have known better than to cover gutters filled with leaves and twigs and branches with shoddy gutter covers. Unbelievable! See the little plants growing. So this is my experience.. with J&A and Roofing.
Description of Work: This was kind of a nightmare.. the old roof needed to be replaced and I knew J&A had done work nearby in the town or Red Hook for some Town Board people. A man and his son (I believe it was his son) were sent out to do the roof .. they forgot the gutter covers, even forgetting they were included in the new roof cost of $6,200. (A simple roof, low slant angle) . When they arrived to do the roof, J&A put their ladder up against the existing gutters and dented them (they are still dented); shortly afterwards, the boy nearly cut his thumb off. I did provide some first aide, but he was not taken to the hospital, as I suggested. J&A, in placing their ladder against the gutter to access the roof, broke two patio ornaments ( a frog and a white pedestal, which I purchased in Albany) which were never replaced, although they gave lip service to replacing them. They pulled off the old roof shingles to put the new ones on.. I do not know if they ever put on the new copper flashing around the roof, as was part of our contract and they eventually put very cheap gutter covers on the gutters (not the ones showed to me in the showroom). When I went up to my attic space to inspect the roof from below, it was like a sauna. They had neglected to reinstall the roof venting, which runs along the peak of the roof. When I told them that, they put in something. They also removed the vent fan in the roof while putting up the shingles, but put it back crooked, so it did not fit into the hole and you could see light at the perimeter of the fan insert. Within 6 months to a year, the roof leaked, where it had never leaked before. Cont below.
