DO NOT HIRE THIS MAN. HE IS A LIAR AND A SCAM ARTIST. On the recommendation of one of my good friends I hired Drew Metlzer toput a brand new roof on the home I had just purchased. When buying the home we knew we were going to need a new roof so we had budgeted for it. I got three estimates. Drew's estimate was the lowest, but it wasn't so much lower than the next guy, whose estimate was $800 more. He left my estimate on my porch, even though I had yet to move in. Since one of my friends had just had her roof done by him and was "very happy" with his work and with him in general I called him to check on the estimate. When I picked it up and compared it to the others it seemed legit. Services were to include ripping of the old roofing, repairing and or replacing plywood underlay as necessary, including 5 sheets of plywood in the estimate, replace all flashing including around the chimney, clean gutters, and clean and cart away all debris. On the estimate it said that Drew was a "BBB certified member". I thought that was great, so I decided to look him up. Turns out he is not a member of the BBB even though this is prominently and boldly printed on his estimate. I called him to inquire about this. He explained that he "was getting no benefit" from paying for membership, so he allowed it to lapse. I figured that sounded reasonable, and, since I had a glowingrecommendation, I figure I'd let it slide. I definitely SHOULD NOT have. In his estimate he proposed putting shingles on my rear roof that has a low slope and had had a flat roof. I inquired about this and he told me that he was going to put down a full ice/water barrier and that I would "never have aproblem". He assured me that he had been doing this for over 20 years, that he stands behind his work and is planning to leave his business to his children. Right. So okay, I went for it. The day of the job we still had not moved in, but my husband and I took our 8 month old and drove out to the house to meet them. When we arrived the workers were tearing off the roof and debris was everywhere. Also, they seemed to be avoiding our glances. Turns out they ran their truck into our fence and broke one of the posts. When I pointed this out to Drew he assured me they would fix it. He also asked me to write him a check for the first part of the roof, and specifically asked if I could just write it directly to the supply company. I thought this was shady, but he was already working on the roof, so it seemed a little late for this. So I did. Then we left. When we returned the next day we found bits of debris all over our property, bricks, shingles, plastic and black paper in our grass. Also, more frighteningly, the roof was SLOPED. I immediately called Drew and he informed me that "with older houses this sometimes happens and itwill settle". And, if I didn't like the way it looked I could pay him MORE money to rip it up and replace the plywood. I asked why he didn't do that in the first place and he told me that they "were so focused on the back roof" that they didn't think of it. I didn't want to give this man another cent, so I said no. Well, it did settle into a much deeper and more dangerous and alarming sag. Now I have had to hire contractors to open up the ceiling upstairs to determine what this guy did to my beam andrafters that is causing these structural problems. Oh, and the day after the roof was installed, it was already LEAKING upstairs. I called Drew again and he said he would come look at it. He told us to put a bucket under it as it dripped through the ceiling ruining the drywall. He climbed on the roof and said that it was a roofing nail and that in 1/200 jobs this happens. He assured us he had fixed the problem. He wanted to know if he could get the rest of his money. I informed him that I would pay him when he fixed my fence. He got right on that and two days later came with another guy to replace the broken fence post. When it was done I told him I would pay him. I had a check for him and he claimed that that was not what we had agreed upon, that we agreed I would pay him cash. Of course I had not, but it didn?t make a difference to me, and by this time I just wanted to be rid of him, so I did. He didn't even provide me with an official invoice or anything. He just scrawled something on the back of a piece of paper. A few weeks later when it was raining I noticed the ceiling in my dining room was cracking. I originally thought it was the bathroom, but when the bathroom on the first floor began leaking I went on the roof I noticed that he left rotten roof underlay and rotten shingles with no flashing behind them. On September 28th after a particularly heavy rain, I had water dripping through my light fixtures in my downstairs bathroom. Not only through my fixtures, but straight through the drywall, running down the walls. I immediately called Drew who said he would "be there as soon as possible". I asked when and he said an hour or so. In an hour when I had not heard from him I called him back and he then said he was not sure when he could get there. I told him this was unacceptable and that he needed to come right away. After much pressing he showed up but did nothing. He said he would come back the next day when it stopped raining. The next day I was at work and my husband was home, but no Drew. My husband had to call him twice to even get him to show up. When he did he didn't even knock on the door but walked right into our yard, put a ladder on the roof and 'fixed' the problem. My husband (who had our 10 month old with him) asked Drew what the issue had been. Drew had no answer and just kept making excuses, saying how it only happens in 1/200 jobs and that since humans are doing the work there can always be human error. He admitted that his guys had "made a mistake" though he didn't know what it was and asked only that we give him the opportunity to "make it right." When I got home it was raining again and it was still leaking. I called Drew immediately and told him to call me, that he and his men needed to come and do a through analysis of the roof to determine what the problem was and to fix it. He never returned my call. I called him again on Sunday, informing him that I was going to contact my attorney to determine how to proceed and that he needed to call immediately so we could come to a resolution. He never called. Since it was clear that Drew Metzler had no intention of re-doing the entire roof correctly, or even returning my phone calls, I decided to use Angie?s List to find a roofer to help me fix my problems. I did and they were AMAZING (Leak Stoppers, Inc.?see the review I left for them!). They replaced my back roof last Thursday and Friday and when they pulled off the old shingles, I was horrified (though not at all surprised) to find that Drew had only replaced one area of roof decking with one piece of plywood and left multiple GAPING holes all over the rest of the roof. He never removed the old flashing anddidn?t install any new flashing, either. He didn?t repair the rotten wood on the side of the house resulting in leaking inside the wall which has soaked and rotten some of my framework and resulted in leaking in my dining room ceiling, damage to the drywall etc. As soon as I get the carpenter to open up the ceiling to find out what damage he did to my rafters and beams I will post an update. And, if I decide to get the whole roof replaced I will also post an update with what we find.
Description of Work: Remove old roof shingles, replace and repair roof decking with plywood as necessary, remove old flashing and install new. Clean and cart debris. Install ice/water barrier and new roofing shingles and a ridge vent.
