It took two days, total...sand, clean, and apply base coat of sealer the first day, apply both second and third coats on the second day.

The first day, they showed up at about 10 AM (after a phone call saying that another job would delay them from the original 8 AM time specified). Dave and Rich were efficient and polite, and finished the initial sanding and cleaning within three hours. There was some dust, but since this was an attic area separated from the rest of the house by a closed door, it wasn't a problem for the rest of the house. That said, it was relatively warm that day and we were able to turn the forced-air heat off so that it wouldn't circulate the dust, and that probably helped a lot. They also put a portable fan in one of the windows of the area being treated to exhaust the dusty air.

In the afternoon, they applied the first coat of sealer in about an hour (see notes 1 and 2, below), and left for the day to let it cure. They left their fan in the window to help exhaust the fumes and keep the house livable.

On the second day, Dave showed up at about 10 AM to apply the second coat of sealer...he was done before noon. He returned in early afternoon to apply the final coat of sealer. On his way out, he noted that he would leave the exhaust fan in the window overnight to exhaust the fumes. As I write this (11 AM the next day) he has not returned to retrieve the fan, which we removed from the window when we got up this morning. We're going to wait a few more days before we start re-loading the room to make sure the sealer is completely cured. We can still smell the sealer a bit but it's not overwhelming and the floor IS absolutely beautiful.

Note 1: The Glitsa sealer is solvent-based and leaves quite a thick solvent odor when first applied. We were lucky in that the area we had processed was on the 2nd floor of our house and mostly sealed off from the first floor (except for the forced-air heat noted above). We didn't have to move out while the job was done, but unless you have such an isolated area being done, BE PREPARED TO SPEND A COUPLE OF DAYS LIVING SOMEWHERE ELSE. Or go with the polyurethane, which isn't as stinky, but which also doesn't stand up to wear and traffic as well.

Note 2: Dust is the enemy of a refinished floor...it should be sparkling clean before the sealer is applied, or that dust can clump and make lumps and dark spots on the floor which are under the sealer and therefore permanent until the next sanding. After the floor was sanded and vacuumed, I noted a layer of fine dust on the floor while Dave was moving equipment around before applying the first coat of sealer. I pointed this out to him, and he acknowledged it, but did nothing about it at that time. When he came back into the house carrying a bucket of sealer, I said, "I don't want you putting sealer over that dust." His rather surly response was, "Relax, this isn't the first floor I've ever done! The vaccum cleaner is still up there...I'm not done yet," and then proceeded to mumble a string of deprecatory remarks about my intelligence and the species of my parents (my mother in particular), sprinkled liberally with "F-bombs," when he thought I could no longer hear him.

It is this incident that is responsible for the "C" grade in professionalism. I'm sure he gets nosy homeowners all the time, and I have to admit that the finished result is quite good, but Dave's attitude needs adjustment. I'm not stupid, and an explanation would have gone a long way farther toward easing my fears than the string of invective he unleashed when he thought I was out of earshot.

From the time we were visited for an estimate until the completion of the job, we were impressed. Everyone we dealt with at Ray Case was punctual, knowledgeable about the work, and conscientious. We were well-informed about what to expect as far a noise, fumes, etc - This was so helpful in that we could prepare our home, pets, and ourselves before the work started. Over the course of the week it took to complete the job, the gentleman (and YES, he was a gentleman) doing the work kept us informed about what was done and next steps.

Our floor looks wonderful - like new! We are SO happy with the floor and our experience with Ray Case.

We had to choose a stain from across the country so they sent some samples home with my husband. They talked with us over the phone and when I got to town they were already sanding the floors. The servicemen put some samples on the floor right then and there to make sure that I was happy with my choice. Their customer service was very impressive and they did a beautiful job.

The company did an excellent job. I had prior experience with this company, and they'd done a good job on a repair so that's why I called them. The estimate was prompt. The quality of the finished job was great. They arrived exactly when they said they would. Since there were a number of other subcontractors working at the same time, they had to 'juggle' the work space and time, which they easily did. When they got to a few transition areas (between wood and tile), they gave suggestions on how to do the transitions, which looked good after the who;e project was finished. The fellows doing the work were courteous and worked hard. They completed when they said they would. They called in advance to keep me updated of minor schedule changes. I'll use this company again always.

Workers were prompt and professional. Answered my questions completely and patiently. As advised by Ray Case when he did the estimate, I had to "move out" for two days due to the strong odor of the finish recommended. However, I will no longer need to wax and polish floors. Matched color to built-in bookcase and stairs. Very satisfied.

Ray Case came to our home, gave us an estimate and told us in detail what to expect. Because of the type of finish that we used, he suggested that we might want to be out of the house for a day and evening because of the odor. Two of our floors were done on the first visit and the third was done a week later. This was our request and allowed us to move furniture as needed. The people who serviced us were friendly and professional. They did a wonderful job and our floors look great. All work was completed when promised and the price was good. Mr. Case has been in business for many years and I can see why. A class company all the way. Use them and you won't be sorry

Very accommodating. Good work. Only complaint is that there was one area where finish either puddled or was not fully worked in. We should have had them back to fix this; just never took the time because it wasn't critical.

They quoted $5 to $6 per square foot. The flooring area was about 400 to 500 square feet. So that worked out to around $25,000. It was a remodeling job. There was no flooring in that area. They had to install new flooring. He was knowledgeable and professional but more expensive than other contractors. If money was not the biggest concern, he would have been an excellent choice. I think he would have done a good job. If one needs to get a decent job done for a decent price, one has to look elsewhere. I will probably not use this company in the future.

The job started very well, however, when they got to the end of the job, they measured incorrectly and were short 5 peices (and all the trim). It took another week for the additional 5 pieces to arrive. They installed them on a Saturday... but still no finishing trim. We are now 3 weeks out from the start of the job, and we are still waiting for the job to be completed. Ray Case claims that the manufacturer is out of the trim and it is back ordered. We cannot move forward with carpet installation until the job is finished. This may not be the installer's fault, but it is becoming an inconvenience for us as we would like to finish the projects and move into our condo. To Ray Case's credit, he has not asked for any further payments beyond our original deposit. I have used Ray in the past in another home we owned and was satisfied with his work. I hope this is just a little "blip" in his otherwise good reputation.

Job was done in two steps. Living room, two bedrooms, and porch in first week. Second week was final bedroom and kitchen. Excellent work by a good employee. Job was started on time, and finished when stated. Same person on the entire job.

I would give an A+ if it was an option - and am not a gusher by nature. I got three estimates to refinish my hardwoods throughout my house (upstairs and down) - $6,500, $4,400 & Ray's - $2,700. He had great reviews, my contractor raved - and we have been really impressed. They did a beautiful job - used the finish I wanted (glitsa - as we had wore off a polyurethane finish in our kitchen in 3.5 years) - they were polite, professional and helpful. And the floors look beautiful!!!!!

I am an extremely particular person when it comes to work being done on my home. I worked for a top 10 homebuilder for years and I do most of the work on my home however the hardwood floors were in rough shape and a fairly involved job. Ray Case himself showed up on-time to complete the estimate, scheduled me within 2 weeks and his worker showed up on the 1st day at the agreed upon time...punctuality is not generally a characteristic of contractors but isn't a problem plaguing Ray Case. The worker was courteous, explained to me every day what he had done the previous day and what to expect on the present day. The worker was extremely clean, none of the usual excessive dust that typically permeates every corner of the house. The finished job looks absolutely incredible. I would recommend Ray Case to anyone who is in need of hardwood floor work....I cannot say enough good things about my experience with this contractor.

The first coat that they applied did not turn out well, even though they applied what had been on the floor previously. Thus they came back and applied another type of coating that worked out fine. What impressed me is that there was no question that they would not be satisfied until I was. I am sure that they did not make any money on this job since they had to make more trips to the house than they originally estimated, yet they did not change their price and we paid only the original estimate. Right from the start we felt that the original price was very reasonable, given the work required to do the job.

FANTASTIC PEOPLE WITH PRIDE IN WORKMANSHIP! I can not say enough good things about them from start to finish - excellent, helpful, very professional (Seve and Jeff are tremendous), great job in with my floors, and the best price of four other estimates.

Ray was very easy to work with. Two workers did one room; they were perhaps not quite as tidy going in and out of the house and tracked in some dirt. The second room was done by one guy who was totally neat and clean; I barely had to clean up after he left.

The workmanship was excellent. When the estimate was first done it was recommended we use an underflooring (we were installing on plywood)-- but when the work began, we were told it wasn't necessary. This saved at least $400-500. The bill was further adjusted for unused materials. We're very pleased. The work was beautiful--one of the floor vents had be custom made--it fits so well. The dust for the stair sanding was minimal.

Ray came out to our home and got the information for the estimate. The estimate came in within a few days after the visit. It was comparable to other companies we had gotten estimates from. Ray's employees came in and did the work in about a week. We had some damaged areas that needed to be replaced and they turned out very well.

We had serious scratches and digs in the floor, and had had a very poor sanding job done about 8 years ago. We thought we might have to replace the floor but Ray came out to look it over and said it would be fine. The floor now looks great. The process took about 3 days and we had to leave the house and stay elsewhere as the finish has a caustic odor when first applied, but it was well worth it as the floor looks like new now. We were able to get back in after 3 days and the smell went away quite quickly. I would recommend this company to anyone.
