I called them to replace a bathroom sink faucet. I purchased the faucet and supply lines - I just needed their skill. They gave me a time frame of 2 to 4 pm. They arrived before noon while I was running some errands but my husband was home. No complaints here, better early than late!
The tech looked over the job and gave me a cost estimate. I signed the work order and gave him the okay to start. After about an hour, he told me that because of the small size of the work area he would have to get another plumber in to finish the work that afternoon. Later in the day (approx. 3:30pm) we got a call from the office that the other plumber would not be able to make it and that we would have to wait until tomorrow afternoon after 3pm. The office staff was very apologetic.
Tom arrived at about 3:30 the following day and proceeded to install and test the faucet. Everything was done in about an hour.
He was courteous, professional and knowledgeable – and he was able to maneuver into the tight space (although he looked like a pretzel).

The only negative thing about this company is that their prices are high. Another well-known company estimated the cost at $200. The charge quoted by Ray the Plumber was $269 with a $10 senior discount plus tax. The $10 senior discount was not even 5%.
I chose Ray the Plumber because my neighbor used him for a major project and was pleased with his work.

"Member...you are funny. Also funny how you omitted your address purposely too. I wouldn't want my neighbors to know either, if a plumber visited my home two times and kept removing syringes!!!! We came to your home at 21 Griffin Drive in Mt. Sinai on November 23, 2012 and charged you $299.95 to snake out your main sewer line to street (about 80'). We cleared the main line which was clogged with needles and syringes! You blamed a new boyfriend and told my technician that. On 11/30/2012 you called again and AGAIN we came to you...Mike removed about 15-20 syringes again and even though you declined to purchase an extended warranty on the first visit, WE DID NOT CHARGE YOU! I don't know why, and no one in my office can figure out why, you say I or someone was rude in the backround?...your review is very strange, and without any merit."

"Your last sentence in your review states that the date you wrote is not accurate, but honestly, your entire story is not accurate Customer. The correct date of our visit was November 3, 2010, NOT March 2012! Why would you wait almost two years to post such an erroneous, inaccurate review? I know why Mr. Member...and I will be kind and courteous enough not to remark to that reason. I understand you are a senior. You should be wise enough though, at this stage of your life, to realize it is wrong to not be truthful or honest. Here are some facts… my technician arrived at 1:05 PM on 11/3/10 and ended your visit at 2:31 PM...a little longer than the half hour you stated, (almost 1 ½ hours.) My senior technician who visited your home that day replaced (3) shut-off valves under your kitchen sink, one hot-water valve with waterline to your kitchen faucet, one cold-water valve with water line to your kitchen faucet, and one hot-water dishwater valve connected to the existing hot-water supply line to your dishwasher... Not a huge job, but not a quick in and out job either. He quoted you our flatrate price for this repair of $309.95... NOT $365.00 as you wrote!...BIG DIFFERENCE! And again, it's not like we surprised you with a bill after the job was completetd! We gave you that price, $309.95, BEFORE WE EVER STARTED the job! YOU SIGNED AND AUTHORIZED US TO DO THE WORK BEFORE WE STARTED THE WORK!...No one surprised you with a bill after we were done....I think you may have been surprised though that we were fast to get there, had all the parts in our fully stocked truck, and that we were neat, clean, and professional! I am very sorry you are unhappy with our price, but I am even more sorry that you are not able to understand and review our service visit accurately. Thank You."

They were late coming out to my house which did not set a good tone for the entire visit. I had discovered exactly where the leak was coming from and showed the plumber when he arrived. My house house still has the original pipes from the 1960s. The plumber had assured me that partially fixing the pipe would solve the problem. I told him that I was uncomfortable with not replacing and fixing the whole pipe. He continued to tell me that fixing the small area of the pipe would fix the problem and that he did not have time to replace the entire pipe. He fixed the pipe and left after the job was complete. Approximately 25 hours later I had a leak in the same pipe just further down the line which is why I had originally asked him to replace the whole pipe. I called Monday morning to advise them of the new leak and the receptionist got very defensive very quickly with me. A customer who just had service with them should not have been treated this way.
Response from RAY THE PLUMBER INC

"I get it when customers are upset about unexpected emergencies that might throw their budgets a curveball… however, I don’t get it when customers are able to write inaccurate data on forums such as this. On November 2 of this year I sent you one of my top technicians, Anthony, to your home, at your request, for “a pipe in the basement leaking.” After Anthony viewed the defective section of piping which needed replacement, it was agreed by BOTH OF YOU that, at that time, the best course of action was to replace that one section of piping leaking. You understood that didn’t you? Why on earth would you write that Anthony said he did not have the time to do a complete repair… NOT TRUE! He could stay for 3 days if you wanted that. The fact is, you both agreed that this would be the best first course of action so as to not make it a huge repair job…as you stated…ALL THE PIPES ARE OLD!. Anthony then quoted you $439.50 for that repair, not $520.80 as you inaccurately wrote! $520.80 was the total AFTER you include the Bio-Clean waste eliminator which you also purchased. After completing the repair of replacing a small section of old galvanized pipe, a few elbows, a PVC adapter, and a new bathtub trap, Anthony reviewed the job with you, ran the water down the drain, and visually inspected the repair again for any signs of a problem… NO LEAKS!... but all very, very old pipes...nonetheless, you signed saying you were 100% satisfied. Now I understand thing changed, but let’s get the story straight!... 3 days later, (not 25 hours later as you stated,) you called us back and spoke to my wife. Now if anyone reading this post has ever met my wife the one thing anyone cannot say is that she would EVER be rude or defensive! NOT POSSIBLE! Again, the truth is YOU became defensive…basically because she quoted you our dispatch fee of $39.95 to come back to your home. We have to quote the dispatch fee. Sometimes things turn out to be nothing to do with the original repair job…however, it was explained to you that if the new leak was anything under warranty, you would NOT be charged. On Tuesday, November 6th, my senior technician Tom arrived at your home and repaired another leak on that line for no charge. It was not the same pipe leaking, but he understood that we were just there….he got it….I got it…why don’t you? We are a family run business trying to help and serve our customers… I just wonder honestly, what we did so wrong?"

We used Ray’s Plumbing to solve an emergency leak coming from our refrigerator water line that was pouring into the basement below. The plumber came at night within a very short time as promised and fixed it. We left the next day for vacation and when we got back noticed there was a hammering in the pipes whenever we flushed two of our four toilets, which we tried to resolve ourselves by running the water from all faucets and flushing the toilets (we read how to do this on the internet).
No luck, so we called Ray’s back, thinking that the first job had somehow introduced air into the system. The original man came back and strapped the pipe to the wall, thinking that would be a fix. It did not fix the problem so we again called and a different technician came, who told us that we needed to replace the mechanisms in our toilets because they were not working properly. This made us very unhappy, because we still believed that somehow the problem resulted from the original repair because we had no issues for 17 years before that with the toilets. So we called back and asked to speak to Ray himself, who then called back and promised to come over and take care of it.
He did. He and the original plumber who works for him ended up replacing the mechanisms in the two toilets. Ray explained that during the original repair, when the water was tuned back on, the initial flush might have driven sediment into the 17-year-old toilet mechanisms, causing them to malfunction. But Ray did not charge us for this repair or for the three visits it took to resolve the problem. So, we would definitely use them again – the owner DOES stand behind his work and tries very hard to keep his customers happy. Basically they were right, we were mistaken, and they took care of us anyway.

They were extremely professional and clean. They put things on the floor before they walked in. They recommended a cesspool, so I saw another guy in charge of that, and he wouldn't do anything before I added the vents and pipe with elbow. I used him too, after the piping was done first. They handled everything properly. They get high ratings and I would use them again in the future.

I thought they were very pricey, and two or three days later, water was leaking from our bathroom sink into our basement. They are the main reason why I joined Angie's List to find good companies.
Response from RAY THE PLUMBER INC

"Dear Member, I saw your review on Angie’s List and I wanted to personally thank you for your feedback! I hear 99% positive feedback daily, but I absolutely do appreciate to hear from a customer when there is any type of question or concern. I checked our records and saw that your concern was related to a job we did on March 9, 2010 to remove and replace a defective bathroom sink pop-up and drain assembly in your bathroom. Being that this work was performed over a year and a half ago, I was confused as to why you would post a negative review on Angie’s list so long after we did the work you requested and authorized us to do, without giving us a chance to address any further concerns you may have had. Ray The Plumber is here to make people happy and to provide them with great service. Regarding the price of the visit – In a perfect world Member, there should never be a price complaint here at RAY THE PLUMBER because WE MUST GIVE THE CUSTOMER THE PRICE BEFORE WE DO ANYTHING, AND WE MUST GET THE CUSTOMER’S AUTHORIZATION IN WRITING! EVERY JOB! EVERY DAY! I know our technician Eddie did all of the above because that was the first document I checked when I investigated your concern. The pricing for your particular service and repair was taken from our Flat-rate Pricing Manual which each one of my technicians carry in their truck. Our Flat-rate Pricing Manual consists of thousands of different job tasks with standard, senior and premium pricing for each job. These flat rates were generated from my experiences with thousands of jobs I have completed over the past 40+ years. Our flat-rate pricing gives customers what they want, the price BEFORE we start the job! That way if the repair price quote is not in your budget, you have the option of not doing the job. Eddie quoted you the price of $249.50 for the entire installation with a new chrome pop-up and drain assembly – which you authorized and signed for before we started the job! Why would you then over 18 months later give me an “F”, saying it was “pricey”? Also why a “C” in responsiveness? You called @ 10:49 AM. Eddie arrived @ 11:25 AM! Remember too that the RTP truck that came to your house represented an approximate $70,000.00 investment. I could send a couple of kids to your home - running back and forth to Home Depot for parts - making the job run for a couple of hours. I don’t think that’s what any consumer wants. Please don’t penalize us because we arrived promptly, had all the parts on our truck and completed the job professionally and efficiently. I really do understand that there are other companies with different pricing in our market if that’s the real problem. In any industry there will be a range of prices, reflecting a range of quality and a level of service. In the plumbing industry we aim to be the BEST PLUMBING COMPANY on Long Island. In short Member, it is a costly endeavor to maintain our high standards. For all our efforts, sometimes we fall short. I wish we could charge less and still maintain the quality and integrity of operation to which we are committed. I am also here to personally address any of your concerns with a phone call. Please give my office a call anytime at 631-581-2500 and leave a message with my wife or Renee and I will be happy to call you back to discuss and alleviate any concerns you might have about our services. Thanks again for your feedback. I appreciated hearing from you. Very Truly Yours, Ray Gremaux President / Licensed Master Plumber RAY THE PLUMBER INC. 1-877-CALL-RAY [email protected]"

Hurricane Irene was over, my husband was just out of the hospital convalescing. Called several plumbers, all couldn't come until the following morning. It was necessary for me to have the use of my sink. They came within an hour of my call. The water from my faucet was leaking under the sink even with the water valve closed. They had an almost identical faucet with them in their truck. They removed the old faucet, installed the new faucet and upon my request removed the water filter. All this took place in less than an hour. They had advised me what the cost would be and I felt I had no choice. However, I felt they took advantage of the situation and charged an enormous fee for their service. In all fairness I do not know what the cost of this faucet would be as I have been unable to get to a store for comparison, but I believe if it were solid gold it might be worth the charge. The faucet is a Delta 470 DTS. This was not an emergency call except only to me. It was a Tuesday well before the close of most businesses. They certainly took advantage of the situation and I would not advise anyone to use this company.

"WOW Member!....We gave you FAST same day service, we gave you the price before we started any work, we got your approval in writing once we quoted you the repair and installation price....and you write that you would not recommend us? I don't get it? You even say you called several other plumbers and no one would come right away....you called us at exactly 3:33 PM on Tuesday, August 30th and we arrived at 3:59 exactly!!!! And you graded us a "B" for responsiveness and punctuality??!! By the way....the price of your invoice was $509.50 ....not 560.00. My technician was there well over one hour....he disconnected your water filtration system, removed your old defective kitchen faucet and yes...furnished and installed a new Delta gourmet pull-out kitchen faucet with water lines....we showed you and offered you several other different brands and models that we carry on each and every truck ....some less expensive, however you chose the very beautiful and popular Delta kitchen gourmet pull-out model. Why you crucifying me? What did we do wrong? Work too fast? Arrive too quickly? Have the faucet model you wanted in stock? Let me know next time when you call another plumbing service company after 3:00PM and they arrive within one hour on the same day! GOOD LUCK! Ray The Plumber"

Called Ray the Plumber to assess and repair a leak from my stall shower. Luke did not find any pipe to be leaking and recommended Panzner Construction to come over to take a look at the shower tiled floor.
While Luke was there I asked if he could replace the main water valve in the basement since that was old and not shutting off properly. He agreed to take care of it immediately and applied the $49.99 fee to the job.
Knowledgeable, pleasant and would call this company again if needed.

I had them do work for me on two different occasions. I wanted to ask the plumber a few questions and she was not able to get me a plumber whom I could talk to her over the phone. She was willing to get me a plumber who would come to my house and charge me a service charge to answer my questions. They didn't accommodate me at all. They told me they couldn't get a hold of anybody and you would have to set up a service call. I had a question about a gas line. They said they would have to come and check it but there was nothing that needed to be checked here. All I wanted from them was to answer my question. I was very disappointed with them. I will not pay for a service call to answer my question. I have had them earlier to put a four season and some other work and I told her about that. It was all a money making thing. They just wanted to squeeze money. It was not that I have not had work with them and they just couldn't accommodate me. I think they were not at all professional.

"It is really a sin that anyone can say or write the things as written above by “The Member”. It is very disheartening when a company, like mine, with all my awesome employees trying their best to provide customer satisfaction, have to read this junk. Fist of all, we have serviced this member three (3) times the past year – TWICE FOR FREE! 7/27/2010 member called 12:30PM complaining of corroded copper pipes and brown water stains on slide…a little strange request, but we arrived @ 3:50PM same day. Tech found no evidence of poor water quality in house or at fixtures, then found deteriorated rusting garden hose feeding slide. Problem found, solved and NO CHARGE. We waived fee for silly visit for first time customer. Next on 11/9/2010 member called saying tub faceplate lever should go to 120 degrees and only goes to 105 degrees. Another strange call, but we went same day and showed her that the tub faucet had a safety stop on hot water, common on that particular faucet. We showed her how to use it and charged her the quoted $39.95 for the visit. I DID NOT MAKE ANY MONEY ON THIS CALL. We helped her out for a nominal fee! Next, 3/14/2011 member calls wants basement faucet and outside frost free spigot repaired or replaced. We arrive same day, quote her $595.00 for washers and seats in basement, shower head replacement and new piping and outside frost free hose spigot. We complete repairs/installation and everything fine, no problem. And then this review…There was nothing we could do over the phone! This call required a tech to visit her home! She wanted gas piping information, sounded like a repair, from my girls answering the phone! We have been to your home twice for almost zero dollars, how can you say we want to “squeeze money out of you”? This review is not fair. God Bless this member trying to find a better, faster servicing and more honest plumbing company in the future!!"

To tell the truth, I hesitated to use "Ray the Plumber" a second time after I used them and was satisfied with the work they did a bit more than a year earlier. The reason is that I had heard some bad things said about them (especially here) since my first experience. I feared that the many earlier GOOD reports might have meant that they were getting too big and were not keeping up the standards that made them popular originally. This has been known to happen. However, we had no kitchen sink to use and no dishwasher and I also wanted some badly designed plumbing under the sink completely replaced as there is an "economy of scale" in finding additional work for home repair to do as long as they are coming anyway. These considerations plus "using the devil you know" pushed me to give Ray another shot. Ray's man came and quoted a price that was (IMO) on the high end but was also just about what I expected the high end would be (that is a "fair" rather than a "highway robbery" high end) so I had him go forward. The work turned out to be more difficult than either he or I anticipated but the price held. As I say, "Ray" is not cheap, but both the work and the manner of the worker were professional. I wasn't there at the completion of the work and looked at it afterward. It was well done; the undersink piping was neat and adequately sized for the job, and he made improvements that will make this easier to maintain in the future. FWIW, the "dispatch fee" (i.e., estimate fee if you DON'T use the plumber) was $40, same as last time, not the $70 others complained about. Maybe the $70 fee is if you have them come off-hours as an emergency or something. To me, the difference between $40 and $70 is a big one in feeling pressued to have someone continue a job.

I was told that no matter what, I would have to pay the $70 service call. The technician who showed up, although very polite himself, quoted me $184 for the job. I was very unhappy with the price and told him that. No wanting to lose $70, I allowed him to complete the job. I did call Ray The Plumber back because I felt I had to complain about the price. It was 5 minutes of work, approximately $25 in parts. Ray himself got on the phone, and what started as a firm, but polite, complaint, turned into a yelling match. He wanted to send the technician back to remove the hardware and refund my money, but I was concerned that accidentally (sarcasm intended) something would get broken. I refused his offer, but repeated I was very unhappy about the price and felt that I was although I could have refused the work, I didn't want to be out $70. Ray's counter offer was to take $20 off the price. The technician was very nice, Ray was rude. My advice to all, learn from my mistake and don't use Ray The Plumber.

I requested an estimate to run a gas line outside to a natural gas barbeque (a total distance of about 35 feet). While the representative was very professional and friendly, the price he quoted ($1,450) was outrageous. I ended up doing the job myself for about $150 in parts and 2.5 hours of my time (I don't recommend doing something like this yourself unless you have experience working with natural gas, which I do). I guess this is how they try to pay for all the flashy trucks and TV commercials...

I called and spoke with the owner "Ray" who seemed to be annoyed that I was dissatisifed and said, "I can charge what I want. I'm here to make money." When I persisted saying that I thought the price I paid was excessive, he retorted, "What do you want me to do?" I said that I thought that a partial refund was in order, he agreed to refund me $50.00 but never forwarded me the money. I called Ray the Plumber due to their high ratings. They came on time for their appointment to give me an estimate. However, after three weeks I did not receive an estimate. When I called I was asked whether I would like the estimate emailed or sent in the mail. Even though I asked for email I did not receive until three days later in the regular mail. The estimate that I received was very non-specific and did not seem to include the work I discussed with the estimator.
