I explained my unfortunate situation to Chim-Chiminey, and they fit me into their already busy holiday schedule. They showed up 2 days later and inspected the chimney, and cleaned both flues (fireplace and oil burner). Quick, clean, friendly, affordable.
Chim-Chiminey, you've got a customer for life.
The specialist came out to the home, met with my husband and spent quite some time at our home inspecting the chimney and wood stove. He recommended replacing a cap on the wood stove chimney, which we did immediately as we were excited to use it. After spending a while working on the wood stove, which apparently hadn't been cleaned in years, he recommended that we try burning some creosote remover to loosen up all junk, and then to call him back to do a thorough cleaning. After all, there was only so much he could do. After the visit, we felt pretty happy with the inspection and relieved that we found a chimney company that we could use for years to come.
A few weeks later, we purchased some creosote remover and figured we would try Bill's suggestion to try and burn some of the gunk, with plans to call them back for a second cleaning. Well, after about 30 seconds, the fire went out. We tried several times to burn the creosote but couldn't get a fire started. I called Chim Chiminey, because after all we spent over $650, and I thought it was silly that we couldn't even follow the tech's recommendation in the state that he left the stove. The woman I spoke to was very nice, she advised the tech was away until the week after, and she read me the notes on our account. She read that we were told NOT to use the wood stove at all, and that we had been advised to possibly move the stove to another area of the house and replace the metal vent that runs from the stove to the exterior of the house. I questioned whether the creosote remover suggestion was also notated on the account and I was told no. At this point I was really annoyed, because before our appointment, we didn't even know what the heck creosote remover was!!!! Where would we come up with that had it not been suggested by the professionals?!? I thought it was strangely convenient that this suggestion (a potential fire hazard btw) was conveniently left off of the account, yet the recommendation to replace stove parts and everything else was on there.
The tech ended up calling my husband back, said he never advised us to use the stove, and that we probably had to replace the whole metal pipe leading to the outside. We did ask if the pipe could be taken apart and cleaned and he seemed to have no interest in that. As a manager and someone who works in customer service, this whole experience just rubbed me the wrong way. I have no problem paying for a service, but I was fuming that our account wasn't accurately documented. Good way to cover themselves had our house burned down after taking the advice given during the inspection. He also insisted that he was told that we had no plans to use the stove. Why the heck would we bother to have it cleaned and inspected then?! Why the heck would we spend the additional money to replace the chimney cap if we had no intention of using the stove?!? And NOW they want replace the entire part rather than attempt to clean it!!! The whole thing is outrageous. Weeks later I received a voicemail msg asking us if we wanted to follow up with the recommended service. Uhh.. NO. Had this whole experience been transparent and resulted in us actually being able to USE our chimney and stove, I would've had no qualm with hiring them for the additional "required" work. In this case I felt totally taken advantage of as a new homeowner and I was really disappointed. It's a shame because I bet they are really knowledgeable and good at what they do.
In the end, we had someone else take the piece apart and cleaned it out. We didn't even have to replace the part. Glad we got a second opinion, saved us a few hundred dollars.
THEY INSPECTED THE CHIMINEY AND FOUND THAT IT DID NOT NEED TO BE CLEANED.
I've never had work like this performed, but price seemed very fair for services rendered. I feel much better knowing the system is clean and my chimney is in good shape.
Bill and Mike arrived on time.;They were thorough, knowledgeable and very courteous. They patiently explained their findings and took all the time we needed to understand the details of what they found.
