Response from Alure Home Improvements Inc

"Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I am sorry that we could not assist you with your project and for the misunderstanding. Our estimates are free unless it is for insurance purposes and we actually have specific reasons why. We obviously did not do a good enough job of explaining that to you. There is only a charge for line-item breakdowns specifically required by many insurance companies. That charge is applied to allocate for the resources and time to complete paperwork required by the insurance companies. The amount charged is credited toward the price of a project if the client decides to go forward with the project using Alure. This also protects us from scenarios where someone is instructed to get a quote from Alure, get approval for a certain amount, and then find a different contractor to do the same job for less money. We do apologize it took us so long to connect with you. We do try to contact anyone interested in an appointment within 3 days following a show or event, and apparently we dropped the ball on that. While we certainly understand your frustration about the wait time for an appointment once we connected, we like to think that our current back-up is a result of our long standing reputation for quality work and delivering exceptional customer service since 1946. While of course we’d love to help everyone and wish we had the capacity to assist everyone immediately, we certainly understand that not everyone can wait based on their individual circumstances. We apologize for the inconvenience and for not properly communicating this to you, and wish you the best of luck with your project. We appreciate the feedback and will use this information to see if we can find a way to meet consumers’ needs more effectively."

Overall a very good experience. Pricing was competitive, work was excellent, workers were punctual and competent. They also were able to accelerate timelines and work around our schedule. The salesperson and laborers were courteous and professional, the production manager was rude. But we had the least amount of interaction with him.
We also had obtained a quote on a bathroom addition at the same time and the salesperson for that job was inaccurate in her pricing and not very responsive.
Overall we were extremely pleased with the siding job and would use Alure again.
Response from Alure Home Improvements Inc

"We are glad to hear that you are happy with your siding project. We hope you enjoy it for years to come! If you would like to revisit the bathroom addition, we could send out a different salesperson to help you and give you some different options. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance."

They're a bit pricey but very good. I've never been disappointed. Any time I've had a problem with shingles they even come and repair them for free.

We will clearly not be using a company that doesn't want to work with us; and we hope others will learn not to contact a company that only wants to take on the largest jobs. It's a win-win for everyone!

It started on day 1 with no workers showing up and they already had our money. They apologized and told us it was poor communication. They then subcontracted all of the jobs out, which felt like no one cared about the job nor talked about the full project with so many things falling to the wayside. We went through Hurricane Sandy, a blizzard, and winter weather without heat. Our heat was just turned back on this month. We did have one of the CEOs of a company come out to our house and his answer to the problem was "Oh, we're sorry, we dropped the ball." The project is still not finished months later and we have not received even a dollar in reduction.
Response from Alure Home Improvements Inc

"Hi Member- We apologize that we fell short of meeting your expectations on this project. It is our understanding that final inspection is on Thursday April 25th and things from our perspective should finally be wrapped up. We will continue to work with your air conditioning company to assist with getting that issue resolved. We are sincerely sorry for the struggles you encountered."

We originally approached Alure in the early Fall 2012 to replace the siding on our home and add a portico over the front door. As we were meeting with siding representative we told him about our home renovation and quot;wish listand quot;. He suggested we speak with one of their Home Service Specialists. This person called us within a few days and we were very impressed with his knowledge and ideas. Actually he was a very likeable person. This person also discussed with us many different ways to finance a large scale project. What we liked the most was how everything was under one roof. We would only have one person to deal with. The project was estimated to cost between $200,000 and $250,000. We contacted our mortgage lender to start the paperwork for the 203K loan. We gave Alure a $2,000 deposit and signed a retainer to do the initial architectural work, permits and variance. Then came Hurricane Sandy. We were so impressed with Alure we recommended them to our son and his fiance, whose home was severely damaged in the storm. Three appointments were made with them and not kept. The excuse was and quot;running behind and do not have contact info to calland quot;. My son fired Alure after the third no show appointment. There project was estimated at $150,000. We should have seen the writing on the wall! But we liked the person we were dealing with and decided to move forward hoping it was just the aftermath of such a devastating hurricane. We even suggested to Alure it would be fine with us if they needed to put our project on hold until the Spring 2013 because there were so many people without homes due to Hurricane Sandy. We were told our project was a go and we would get together the following week to finalize everything. Many requests were made to meet with the Architecht to do the renderings and finalized the plans, but never happened. We needed drawings, budgets, etc for the 203K loan but could not get this information. At that point we became very concerned. If communication and the ability to deliver is bad in the beginning what would it be like when the project was in full swing. We cancelled the financing, could not justify paying $12K in closing costs for something so uncertain. Finally in January Alure called to say they were ready to move forward. REALLY! We informed them they were fired and we wanted our $2,000 refunded immediately due to a lack of performance on their part. A certified return receipt letter was sent to Alure last week confirming we fired them for none performance and requesting a refund of our deposit. So far we have not heard back from Alure or received a refund of our $2,000. We are very disappointed things turned out this way as we had high hopes for this project and working with Alure.

Response from Alure Home Improvements Inc

"We are sorry that there seems to be so much confusion and respect your wishes to move on. We have a slightly different account of how things went and we will just agree to disagree on this. Our records indicate your deposit was returned on 1/31/13. If you have not received the refund please feel free to reach out to us at 516-296-7777 to discuss so we can be sure your deposit is returned. We apologize that things didn't work out."

The result--Our small bathroom looks like a mini spa.
The design process--We had three budget levels for materials--tile, flooring, fixtures, lighting, countertop, shower doors, cabinetry, etc--to chose from, and many choices within each level. We loved the choices, except for the lighting fixture, so I bought my own and they installed it without question.
The work process--The supervisor made his presence known throughout the week (dropping in/checking in) and beyond and was readily available to us and his three-man team via cell. They were hard working, showed up as promised, worked steady throughout the day, communicated clearly and politely, and respected us and our home during the process. Considering we have a one-bathroom home, they also planned the teardown and renovation so we could have use of the facilities for as long as possible.
The troubleshooting--* The team hit an unexpected snag in repositioning of the toilet/sink, consulted with the supervisor, and came up with a rerouting solution that was still to code and true to the promised design. When I first heard this, we thought they'd be asking us for more money, but they said there would be no additional charge to us, just another 1/2 day longer than they anticipated. * They had to come back for some recorking, which they warned me might happen due settling/drying. * The countertop arrived cracked, but they reordered and it arrived with plenty of time to be installed before the project was done. * They payed for a carpet repair/treatment due to some spot damage caused. * Long after the work was done, I accidentally broke one of the glass shelves in the medicine cabinet and contacted them to see where I could buy a replacement. They replaced it free of charge and even came, installed it, and tweaked other items while they were here.
Only lingering complaint--The wood of bathroom door is of less quality than I'd prefer.
On another note--After Hurricane Sandy--despite the fact that they redid our roof more than a decade ago, they came and replaced roof tiles without question or charge!!!

Bathroom was first. Went well. quality of work was excellent. One issue with the new plumbing leaking, but was fixed promptly. No other issues.
Room addition was more involved and was delayed due to existing room slab found to be domed after the new room slab was poured. Had to remove and pour new slab for the existing room (den) at my cost.
During room construction, storm tore the tarp off the frame and exposed the interior of the house. When we called - a complete crew was onsite in less than 20 minutes at 4:30 a.m. and replaced the tarp. Customer service is where they generally excel.
Quality work crews did my job. Changes were often made and the cost was reasonable. All the workers were polite and professional.
The room came out fantastic.
Had two different electrician companies on the job. I preferred Nassau Suffolk. No issues. Good communication.
Other company used by Alure made some wiring mistakes when they separately changed my electric service (outside the Alure contract).
Bottom line - you pay more with Alure, but they are responsive and will come back to fix anything that is an issue. Example: One of the windows lost its vacuum. They sent someone over - ordered a new window insert and installed it when it was done (custom sized).
I would use them again because they are responsive. One pet peeve is that they sometimes order extra material to ensure they can do the job, but you never get credit for the unused material.

The first contact we had was with the kitchen designer. She was the reason we decided to use Alure. She came in with a totally new design, relocating the refrigerator and allowing us to have a kitchen island, better utilization of the space, and allowing for more cabinets and counters. While this added some to the price, it seemed worth it to us. One of the best parts of our experience was the ease of selecting cabinets, counters, floors and plumbing - all in their showroom. She seemed to get a sense of our tastes and showed us products that made our choices easy. We were assigned a project manager and although they mostly used subcontractors, these were companies they use on a regular basis. The project manager stopped by most days, and was responsive to calls and e-mails answering our questions and responding to issues and problems that came up. They completed most of the work on a very timely basis, although their were a few issues in scheduling along the way. The project was on hold for 2 weeks due to the hurricane, but thankfully was finished in time for Thanksgiving. We still have a few minor issues, but we are confident that they will be taken care of soon. We absolutely love our new kitchen - the floor, cabinets and backsplash all complement each other and our kitchen looks amazing.

Alure is a class act. I consider them the most reasonably priced high-end contractor. Designs are excellent. They are patient and want to please. Did not nickel and dime on on changes. Cleaned up every day. Stayed on schedule. Gave us several gift certs for dinners when the premises were unusable. Their points program generated a free 8-day trip for us!

Can't say enough good things about this company. They do what they say when they say will, and they follow-up until you are happy. Their price is high, but you get what you pay for, and I would rather wait till I have the extra money and use them than pay less for inferior work.

It went fairly well. There were some issues along the way, as there are with any remodeling project. The design phase was a dream. So much fun to pick out materials with our designer's guidance. Although we ultimately were pleased with the results, the process of doing the remodeling was a bit frustrating. It took longer than we expected to get problems fixed as the remodel was proceeding. Everyone who worked on our project was extremely professional and very courteous, and all our problems got resolved. It just took much longer than we expected. We also found it helpful to keep a list of problems and things that needed to be fixed, because our project manager seemed to have trouble keeping track. That said, we'd work with Alure again.

It took a little longer than promised since one of the tiles was back-ordered and delayed the completion. Two years later I have noticed that the faucet handles, when and quot;closedand quot; do not sit at symmetrical angles. I found out during the hurricane, when I attempted to fill the bathtub with water, that there's a very slow leak when the stopper is closed. I need to contact them and see if they'll do anything.
Overall, they did what they promised to do at what I think was probably a fair price, at least if you're willing to pay more than the minimum to get it done quickly. There's clearly less variety in the materials one has available, and I was worried that my finished bathroom would look like every other one they do. But they had some additional tiles and quot;down in the basementand quot; that were quite unique, I thought, and that made the difference for me. I'm very pleased with the final result.

Great job and great follow up service over the years. Especially recommended are makeovers where they simply replace an existing old bathroom or kitchen as opposed to a total new redesign. Their prices are much more competitive when purchasing one of their packages.

Overall my experience with Alure was very positive from beginning to end. All members of the Alure staff were polite and professional. They arrived on time and did quality work. Jeff and his team were incredible. They were professional and personalble . Even my neighbors were impressed by the consideration they demonstrated. I have received compliments from people in this industry on the quality of the workmanship. I also appreciated their effort to go the extra mile to satisfy my prefences. At every step, Paul, the supervisor, contacted me by phone and visited the work site to check to see if the work was progressing to my satisfaction.
I have used Alure in the past and continue to return to them. Though they are more expensive, I have found the work they do and their staff are excellent. Unlike other companies, they have always returned to fix any problems that develop.
I would (and have) recommended them to family and friends.
