Communication with the initial contact to set up the date of the move and discuss pricing and payment was slightly spotty and terse, but all turned out well in the end.
The long distance move was similar with little communication about the overall process. I contacted the company a few times about when my things would be delivered in California and the responses were brief with little information. I realized it might take a few weeks for my things to arrive as I had done this before, so I wasn't too concerned. It would have been nice to get more details, like the name of the company that would be delivering my things.
I received calls from the road from the moving company about the estimated day of arrival. The driver warned me numerous times about the size of the truck (18 wheeler) and asked whether the area around my apartment could accommodate it. This seemed odd to me. I figured it was their responsibility to ascertain the logistics of the move. Again, though, the driver and his assistant once they arrived, were professional, courteous and meticulous and in the end, all was okay.
I would use them again for local moves in NYC, but might go with a more nationally recognized company for a cross-country move.
All went well, EXCEPT after the move into NYC concluded, the driver presented my husband with $100. "parking fine", which was to be added to the billing at the terminus. After I complained bitterly to the company that charge was subtracted.
The wooden packing crate that was built for an expensive painting was undersized and the painting had to go wrapped in cardboard instead, even though I paid substantially for the crate.
I was very rushed preparing for the move, after calling to schedule I was asked if I could be ready the following day as they had a truck that was Chicago bound. Cost was $1,800. + tips
They were a day later than promised in delivering to Chicago. Tips were given at both ends of the move to 3 drivers.
MOVE #2
Scheduled move was for Sat. 5/25, on 5/23 I was called by the dispatcher and told I had to be ready a day earlier, as that was when the truck was on LI. The movers were due at my home between 12-2 and arrived @ 4:45.
I packed some 20 boxes myself, and the movers blanket wrapped the furniture for storage. The fee was $600. plus tips for 2 men.
I was overcharged for one "art box", paid for two when I only bought one (one having been already provided by myself). Storage is $60.00 per month plus tax, first month free. The movers were professional and worked efficiently.
I will not know the final outcome until I retrieve everything some months/years down the road.
Denzel, the contact person @ Arthur Werner was communicative and very pleasant to deal with.
On the day of the move, I was met by the foreman, who was annoyed to say the least. He told me that I had too much stuff, and I never told them how much stuff I had, and the truck they brought wasn't big enough. He made it seem like I intentionally misled them, and he put Mr. Sample on the phone, who admonished me for misleading him. I told him that what was preliminarily discussed and quoted was expected to change, but instead of a "can do, no problem" attitude, I was made to feel like I was at fault.
This is why the company should ensure that an estimator visits the home prior to the move, which was never done by the company. I did not realize it was my responsibility to ensure they did this. I was also very clear in the initial call to tell them I had an upright piano, which Mr. Sample explained was not an issue. Apparently, the foreman was not told we had a piano, and seemed fairly upset, again acting like I intentionally did not tell them this, which I did.
Either way, I was positive and kept a good attitude, thinking that since we were only moving five short blocks, that if we had to, we could make a second trip, since I was paying by the hour.
***The employees themselves should be commended for executing great care with our belongings. The workers themselves were excellent, and did their jobs very well. The workers were very polite and professional. *****
I bought the workers lunch and drinks.
Upon filling the truck, a significant number of belongings were left behind. I reasoned that since the move was such a short distance, coming back was an option. After all, I hired them to help me move, right? Wrong.
Upon reaching the new home, the movers exercised great care in unloading, and did a great job with the actual labor part. Upon emptying the truck, I asked the foreman to return back and grab the few items left behind at the old residence, and he told me that he "couldn't do it today, but we can come back Monday and finish up, " which would require an additional hour of travel time! C'mon! It was not my fault they didn't bring a big enough truck!
Anyway, I bought them all lunch, tipped each man $40, and paid 1500 (which was a fair price) only to be left to have to move the remaining belongings myself by renting an additional trailer.
So as much as I would wanted this to be an A+ experience, it was just average at best. The laborers themselves were excellent, but the rest of the experience was so-so.
I also recommend using their collapsible plastic bins. The pricing on these was quite reasonable: a little over half the cost of other providers (who just rented bins but did not provide moving services).
Overall, they will be my first point of contact next time I or anyone I know is moving in the area.
About 6 weeks after my original move i did use them again. I had a 10x10 storage facility that i had all the contents removed from and delivered to my new home. Also another good experience. Again, would recomend and use again in the future
