They are wonderful. They came and packed for me and moved everything out in 1 day, as promised. My furniture was delivered in florida a day earlier than promised. all staff was great to work with, answering my myriad questions and clearly explaining all options. when some of my furniture was damaged in the move, Dana Bitton, President, was a pleasure to deal with. We spoke and she said that they didn't have people to make the repairs down in this part of florida. She gave me the choice of 1. Arthur Werner could pick up my furniture and take to new York and have it repaired. of 2. I could find a people here in Florida. I opted to find people to do the repairs here in florida. It took several months to findquality workmen and Dana Bitton reassured me that the claim was within the time frame and I did not need to worry. When I finally got the estimates and sent them to her, my check arrived in the mail in a week. Throughout the process, she was a great. I have rarely worked with such a fine company wiith such integrity. I would certainly use them again and am pleased to give them the highest recommendation. Thank you.
Gustavo was the head of the crew that moved us. I had read his rave reviews on line and told him how happy I was that he was leading the move. He lived up to his reputation -- and so did everyone else on the team. They estimated a four-person team but added an extra person at no extra charge. It certainly made things go quickly.
At one point we realized they had loaded something on the truck that had a sign on it to leave it in the apartment. we told them it didn't really matter -- we travel regularly back and forth to the house so we could have brought it back -- but they immediately went back and got it off the truck and apologized profusely.
When the movers neared our destination they called us to ask if they could move in earlier than the 9 am time we had agreed on. That was great for us. They said between 7 and 8, and arrived in that range. The staircase they needed to use is off of a narrow hallway. We have a large armoire and once I saw the situation I was convinced it would never fit and told them it would be fine to leave it downstairs. They were not to be deterred!!! After a little finagling (including moving a shelf in the closet across the hall from the staircase) they managed to get the armoire upstairs. When they got to the top landing, they accidentally ripped a bit of carpet. They immediately asked me to look at it -- I'm guessing to arrange some sort of repair -- but the carpet is 50 years old and there's no way I was going to hold them responsible.
The team was also incredibly patient about arranging the furniture, and rearranging it. We kept telling them it was ok to leave it where it was because we could move most of what we wanted to by ourselves, but they insisted they were there to help until we were satisfied.
The move was finished before noon! Everything was in good condition -- even a worthless old chest that I told them not to worry about -- it had a loose leg which I expected to fall off but they wrapped it so carefully it arrived intact. They never once complained about any of the challenges they had to deal with.
When I chose Arthur Werner I confess that I never even got a second estimate. I had almost used them once a few years ago but in the end didn't need to make the move I had called them about. I had read all their reviews, and loved the idea of the eco-bins (though we couldn't take advantage of them because of the long-distance move). There was something about them that just instilled confidence in me, and I was not disappointed. They completely met my expectations and I would definitelyuse them again.
I had pre-packed mostly everything in the home, apart from furniture. There were the odd bits that weren't packed and they were nice enough to box it up for me along the way.
The team of 4 guys were able to pack the entire 1600sq foot house very quickly and efficiently. There were a few specific pieces that were tricky, including two glass desks an an upright piano; they were very attentive to these pieces and knew how to handle them.
All and all, everything was done 100% as promised and as expected. Nothing broke, they were very respectful and organized. Never a worry.
Highly recommended, would absolutely call them again.
The three movers arrived on time the day of the move and I thought we were off to a great start. And that's when it all went downhill quickly. Although the foreman and the driver were polite, the the third man was visibly angry at the amount of furniture and boxes of fragile items to be moved and complained to the foreman that another man was needed. When a fourth mover was not forthcoming he announced his displeasure at every opportunity and was rude to me several times. If he does not like his job then he should seek other employment; not be rude to the customer! I paid for and expected professional behaviour. Moving out of the apartment took 5.5 hours. The drive to my new home took them 4 hours and unloading 2.5 hours.
All of the furniture was NOT blanket-wrapped; only those pieces on which I paid extra insurance. The other pieces of furniture were wrapped in saran wrap which resulted in numerous scratches, chips and nicks on all. I had meticulously labeled and numbered all of the boxes I packed. I'm not sure what part of "L=Livingroom, B=Bedroom, K=Kitchen and Extremely Fragile, Antique China, Please Do Not Place Anything on this Box" was difficult to understand. I specifically asked that my TVs, a large glass-framed piece of Egyptian art and hand-painted scrolls be unwrapped last. I had paid extra insurance and for special boxes for these items. So guess which pieces were unwrapped first? The gold leaf on the Egyptian piece was scratched, scrolls dumped in the corner of a bedroom and TVs left exposed as the majority of items were still being brought in. Two bentwood chairs that were not in good shape to begin with were in much worse shape after the moving; the repairs cost $100. There was also a chip made on the kitchen entry of my new freshly-painted home and various marks left on the walls due to carelessness. One of the new plastic storage boxes I bought was damaged as were two pairs of shoes.
Good thing the 88 boxes I packed myself were done as if they were being shipped via parcel post to Mars or there would have been even more damages. The one box of breakables that the "professionals" packed revealed three damaged pieces (antique china gravy boat-badly chipped, vintage glass cakestand-completely broken, vintage metal heated casserole-lid bent). The boxes were piled 4 or 5 high without regard as to fragility or necessity with the labels facing in which meant I was forced to shift boxes much too heavy for me to find anything. I would think common sense would dictate that boxes marked "Glass" or "Essential-Open First" would not be placed at the bottom of the stack! I had packed all the boxes I purchased online from a box company so I paid for additional new boxes; many were previously used and then my things were taken out so they could be reused on another job. I was told I had only "rented" the boxes after the fact.
Finally the foreman said the truck was empty. As it had been a very long day with temperatures in the upper 80s and the men had worked hard I gave them each a $40 tip. (Mr. Malcontent could not even be bothered to say thank-you!) The foreman asked me to sign the receipt and state that everything was ok so he could call in the charge to my credit card. I complied only to find out in the next few days that my ironing board, curtain rods, a box of photographs and some parts from my gym equipment did not make it off the truck. Two months later and I'm still sorting through the chaos of boxes and unpacking so I do not actually know if anything else is missing or broken.
Moving is always stressful and moving companies in general seem to have well-deserved poor reputations. And this experience was no exception. Considering how much money I paid, I and my possessions should have been treated with more respect.
UPDATE 10-24-14: Forgot to mention above that my refrigerator door was damaged somehow; it doesn't close properly. I finally finished unpacking. A framed OOAK artwork also MISSING. And a vintage handpainted Israeli Passover plate that belonged to my mother which managed to arrive to the US intact and was also shipped via USPS from FL to NY unbroken only to be carelessly handled by these movers and is now IRREPARABLY DAMAGED! It was in a box which was marked FRAGILE GLASS ANTIQUES and at the BOTTOM of a stack of boxes. I have revised my review to F. A truly horrible experience!
The estimator, Larry, was friendly and professional, and pointed us in the right direction for finding the cheapest moving boxes. He did not try to upsell us into getting them to pack or provide moving supplies--quite the opposite, in fact, which I appreciated. Their estimates are ceilings: they will not charge you more than the estimate, which another company we looked at could have done.
The loading crew was quick and professional. They brought two trucks (smaller ones, not the huge ones), in line with the estimate, but the truck packer was so good, they only needed one, even with a piano and large woodworking tools.
The unloading guys were from a moving company local to our new home, but the driver was from Arthur Werner, and he was friendly and efficient.
Fast, careful, and friendly all 'round.
I highly recommend them and would not hesitate to use them again. Gustavo the lead manager was amazng. the work was
performed in two locations starting on The Hobart Ave. and finishing on Johnson Ave. in Riverdale,
"We are sorry and very surprised to see your response a FULL YEAR after your move took place. Upon completion of your move a year ago, we were not aware of any of your dissatisfaction other than our movers made an honest mistake of inputting a wrong zip code causing them to be late. You accepted our very large 25% discount and appeared satisfied with our response. In any situation where the management of a company refund money, respond to a perceived wrong, and provide responsive customer service - that is a company who cares about their customers. We are not deserving of your rating."
