This past winter, I had a problem with my generator. After multiple visits, it was determined that an electrical panel needed to be replaced. The first one still had a problem, so they replaced it again (not sure where they got the first one, but the service person slipped at one point and said it was a refurb). After it was running again, the indicator light on our transfer switch still flashed red that there was still a problem. I asked them to check everything to make sure the generator was in perfect condition. They said all fluids were good, everything was replaced/fixed, and that it was probably a fault on the transfer panel. They never got back to me about the flashing, even after the service person said they were going to call Kohler. We assumed the service person was correct and there was something wrong with the panel. ( In fact, I had an appointment with the electrician to fix/replace it). A couple of months later, our electricity went off and our generator did not start. I had them come right away since my son has health issues and we need electricity (main purpose of the generator!). They were good about coming the next day. Unfortunately, this service person said we had NO antifreeze and there was no evidence of any leaks…which means the last person lied to us when we asked to make sure everything was ok - to determine why it was still flashing.
Now, we have a bill for $250. I just called and the service manager told me he did me a favor by getting to our house because of our son. Basically, he threw it in my face that my son has health issues, and even though they made a lied/mistake (and that was why our generator didn't work), we were obligated to pay them no matter what - even though we asked over and over this winter to check everything (which they needed to do to diagnose the original problem anyway. Now we are wondering if they were not honest about the original problem since they didn't even check all fluids). We feel they didn't fill the antifreeze in order to get another service call out of us. They threw in our face that we had an emergency and are taking advantage of people who really depend upon their generator for health issues.

"Thank you for your recent correspondence discussing the issues you have had with your generator. We take all of the work we perform very seriously as we are an authorized service facility for your specific unit as well as others. The exact reason for the failure can be attributed to a number of reasons including a utility power surge, lightning strike or other component in the package failing. The manufacturer is constantly revising these components to improve their performance and prevent future failures. All of these repair parts are new and come from the manufacturer and there are no refurbished items provided or available. The warranty provisions that are associated with your specific unit dictate the type of coverage that you have. In your case and based on the age of your equipment, only parts are covered. The problems with your unit came within a short period of time of you becoming a PM client of ours. Our focus was to repair the unit as quickly as possible to meet your needs at home and warranty deadlines. Frequently it is not possible to diagnose or service a unit until all systems are operational. While our file indicates a coolant level inspection was performed, a full PM inspection report was not complete as required. As such I cannot debate this matter in good conscience and will cancel the May invoice for this call. Lastly we are the largest residential generator service provider on Long Island performing prox 5000 maintenance and service call per year. We do take pride in reporting to all service calls as quickly as possible with all of our technicians factory and in-service trained. And while we attempt to respond as quickly as possible, certain conditions not in our control may prevent this. We however will always show up as quickly as possible."
