We are a family owned and operated business that takes pride in transforming the outdoor living space of our clients. As a third-generation builder, James Oliver grew up in the industry, working with his uncle, and other contractors. While his family focused on general remodeling, Jay as his friends call him was drawn into decking because of his passion for the outdoors, and his love of carpentry. What started with a pickup truck and a helper has grown to be the most reputable and largest installer of decking products on Long Island. Company milestones include being published in the do it yourself line from Sunset Books “The Complete Deck Book,” and being dubbed “Long Island’s King of Decks” in Deck Contractor Magazine. The TREX® Company named Long Island Decking the areas largest TREX® composite decking installer. They took out an old patio and put in a new one with pavers. They did an excellent job; they did exactly what we had discussed. The workman that they used was very cooperative and changing anything that we wanted changed while they were doing work. I just faced one problem which they are going to resolve somehow, which is, the pavers are laid in a fashion that water will run off them but the drains that they have put in are actually under the ground and they are very slow to drain, so they are going to come and see what they can do to fix that.

I received estimates from 7 different vendors. They were highest and by a decent margin. Same work, square footage, and brand of material were estimated. In fact, they refused to supply a written estimate and I now understand why. My phone only quote if 'between 22k and 26k was a full 5k above the next highest estimate. Also, 8k above the lowest. Maybe paying for ad dollars or pretty booklets but I am not sure how they are competitive otherwise.

Everything started ok.  I made an appointment, they showed up on time.  The person doing the estimate, Mr. Gentile, was very professional.  Informed me it would be between 2 days and a week to get the estimate.

A week passed, no estimate.  Finally received an email from Jay Oliver, all it stated was the proposal was ready and I needed to come to their office to review.  Come to their office?   I have never had to come to someone's office just to receive an estimate. I responded asking for the estimate via email.  I never received a response.  I sent another email asking for the estimate explaining I would not be able to come to their office.  Several days later I received an email stating that they would like to discuss the estimate on the phone before sending.  I called their office twice in response.  I am still waiting for some kind of response.  I have not received an email or phone call back from them since that last contact.

This company has been one of the worst I have dealt with in regards to communications.Absolutely horrible.  I would not recommend them to anyone.



UPDATE

I finally met with Jay.  He was very professional and explained everything in great detail.  I am very pleased with the estimate that he provided and the expertise he exhibited with building decks.  If we do decide to move forward with a deck I will definitely use Long Island Decking.

Had a great experience down from the first meeting with Jay. He knew his product through and through. He showed different samples of different products but I chose to go with the Trex Tracends. If i had any question or concerns I would call up the office and talk with Kim and she would have Jay get right back in touch with me. From day one when Mike and his crew Showed up they worked hard and quick only took a total of 5 day to do everything. So if you are looking to put a deck in your backyard go with LI Decking.

We absolutely love our deck and could not be more pleased with Jay and his crew. From start to finish the whole experience was great. They actually had our entire deck built in a day. We left for work in the morning and when we got home, it was done.

The one issue we had was after a few years, the surface of the deck started peeling and there were some really large areas where the surface was missing. We contacted Jay and he reached out to the manufacturer for us and helped us receive what was to be just new slats to replace the damaged ones, but because the thickness of the slats had changed since our installation, we received new slats for our entire deck! (Of course we'd have to pay for the labor to redo the deck, and decided to take on that project ourselves.)

But we could not be happier with Jay and LI Decking and how they handled our decking issues and we would certainly use them again.

This contractor was very eager to pitch the product, explain the work, and get me to sign the contract to begin the construction on my back deck. Many important details of the product including care and maintenance were left out of the initial sales pitch. In fact, he stressed the care and ease the installation of this "maintenance-free" product would provide. Only one small pamphlet on the product line was provided to me with no limitations on use of any kind. After the installation, I immediately began to experience difficulties with my deck. Water stains from a door mat, food stains from a small gathering, even bird droppings were impossible to remove. I immediately called the contractor. After taking several days to return my phone call he decided to no longer deal with me directly but, rather, to have me speak to the product representative. The representative took a couple of days to return my call and when he did he quickly extinguished any ideas I had been given that the product was "maintenance-free." He referred me to the lengthy web site that included product details such as "care and maintenance" for all sorts of everyday occurrences such as bird droppings, wine spills, etc. He stressed the fact that all stains should be immediately cleaned and that the material was very porous and would indeed need constant maintenance. I do believe that to some degree the contractor misrepresented the product and then failed to stand behind it once it was installed.

"I am honestly taken back by this post as our company NEVER uses the term Maintenance-Free when describing any decking products. In fact we have devoted a whole page of our website to just this. In bold print it says No matter what you may have read or been told No Decks Are Maintenance Free. We try our hardest everyday to dispel the misinformation about decking products that are available today. We have also devoted a paragraph in our contract that we read through with all our clients and have initialed which this client did. This is the actual paragraph. All decks installed by LID require scheduled maintenance to keep them looking their best. There is no such thing as a maintenance free deck. Mold and mildew can and will grow on all exterior products including, wood, concrete, pavers, composite and vinyl decking. Deck maintenance is a service that we provide for an additional fee. If you intend on doing it yourself, please refer to the care and cleaning guide at your manufacturer website. In the pamphlet our client was left at our initial meeting it talks about “Easy Maintenance” on Page 1 and on the next page refers to annual cleanings and cost. The representative for the product was contacted to try and help with the situation and contacted our client within the week. I was informed that he had answered all questions and had given our client information that could help care for the deck. There is also an inexpensive spray on hose off cleaner that we sell that can keep the deck looking new for the life of the product. I am very careful to know what it is I am getting for my money. The contract he wrote up was very clear. However, they did not install the new deck in the same footprint as the old deck where both sides attach to the actual siding of the house. So they left me with 2 gaping holes on both sides of my house where the attachment of the original deck was. His response when I called him was "About 10% of jobs happen like this. Sorry, I don't do siding. You'll have to find a handyman to fix your siding." My siding is very old and not commonly found. Had 2 assessments of it each estimating over $600. Unbelievable. Unfortunately, I will have to take further measures now. Buyer beware. Also, never gave me any type of warranty on the contract. Verbally during contract said "lifetime warranty". I faxed him a letter about it and no response.

"She is correct, the new deck is not exactly in the same footprint as the old deck because we used a different railing system that mounts in a different position. The reason it was not pointed out to her earlier was that the job was estimated at night, per her request, and we were unable to see the rail attachment to the house. As soon as it was noticed she was advised to have a handyman repair her siding after completion of the job. It was not part of our quote, or a service we provide. She did so and after some discussion we ended up reimbursing her in full for the repair as a show of good faith. I have the copy of the cleared check in her file. As far as her warranty is concerned. Long Island Decking has been in business since 1999 and not ever charged for a reasonable repair to one of our clients decks. I told her that if she ever needed anything to call me and I would be sure to take care of whatever issue she had. That is still true today. We did not have a formal written warranty at the time. We now have a formal 5 year warranty as part of our contract, but our customer service extends far beyond that if needed. Jay Oliver Owner Long Island Decking"

THEY WERE GREAT AND IT WAS A GOOD EXPERIENCE. THE OLD DECK WAS PULLED AWAY. MY DECK AND MY NEIGHBOR'S WERE DONE AT THE SAME TIME. SINCE IT WAS OFF SEASON WE GOT A GOOD DEAL ON THE PRICE.
