Alterations/Sewing/Decorating
The fact that he could have it done in 3 days should have raised a red flag. He may be hard of hearing, as he was not aware that I had entered the shop on both occasions and I had to call out to him several times to get his attention. The shop was not terribly clean -- dusty, floor needed to be vacuumed. One coat was very simple -- just shorten the sleeves, but he wanted to shorten them clear up above my wrist bone (outerwear jacket) and I had to insist that he put it down to where I wanted it (it's still maybe borderline too short). That one was OK. The other jacket had a straight cuff with placket attached to a turned under and topstitched seam at the end of the sleeve. I knew I would lose most of the placket, which was OK with me, but I wanted to re-create the seam detail. This was a darling $250 coat and he just ruined it. One cuff has almost NO placket at all and the finishing is very sloppy; the other has about a 2" long placket. One sleeve has a gaping 3" long hole in it up by the elbow where he opened up the sleeve seam (coming down the outside edge of the arm) and then didn't go back up to the top to stitch it shut again. This is a lined sleeve, so I'm going to have to try to hand stitch it shut from the outside or take it to another shop to see if they can fix the other cuff problems as well as the open seam. I did not take a close look at them until I got home. He did not offer to let me try the coats on in the shop to make sure I was happy with the length, etc. He DID make sure I knew how hard he thought it was to fix the cuffed sleeves but he was not going to charge me any extra for it. His fee was $35 for the easier coat and $55 for the cuffed one. I gave him a $10 tip because he finished them quickly for me. (I do not live in Reno and was leaving town to go home). So, $100 and one of the coats is going to cost me even more money to fix and may be completely ruined. And......the coats were covered in sewing debris (threads, lint, etc.) when I got them back, so the back of the shop must never get cleaned, either. I would have expected him to at least brush the coats clean or use tape to get the junk off of them before returning them to me.
I will NEVER go back there.
I will NEVER go back there.
