Description of Work: The service technician was very helpful once I explain how the system was configured. However we have two zones of heat and both furnaces are in the basement. When I walked downstairs he had the first floor furnace taken apart despite us telling him the trouble was with the upstairs furnace.

Description of Work: Our air conditioner failed and I called Air One, who sent someone that day to fix it. They said the control panel needed to be replaced and then replaced it at a cost of $800. 2 months later, my heater, which is controlled through the same unit failed and I called them. They said my entire heater needed to be replaced and the cost would be $10,000. Instead, I called PSEG, which came, and said that the porcelain coating on the flame sensor had cracked, plus one other small gadget needed to be replaced. After they replaced these parts, they said my new control panel had burnt out. To be fair, it might have been because the flame sensor was not working that the control panel shorted out; however, PSEG then got me a new panel for $250 (including cost of repair). Added to the two smaller parts they replaced, PSEG only charged me $400 without trying to get me to spend $10,000 to replace a heater that seems to be working just fine, now.

Response from Air 1 Heating & Cooling
We responded to the no heat call and our service manager was sent. The customer was also quoted for a new flame sensor as well, far lower that PSE&G and also gave the option for a new unit. both options were clearly written on the service invoice and that in the recommendations area of the service invoice it clearly states that the customer will get back to us. We are sorry for the inconvenience that this caused our client.

Air 1 came at the date/time requested. Initially it was for a service call on an ancient furnace but at the time I made the appointment I noted the furnace may need to be replaced. The Air 1 person opened it up and quickly determined it should be replaced (no surprise there, the unit was > 50 years old). He said he would not charge for the visit since we were replacing the furnace, which is not necessarily how things always work in my experience. They came and did the work on the day they said they would (a day or two after our initial visit) and left the job site completely spotless. From outward appearances, the work was done very professionally - in a word, the new furnace looks great. It also works as it should of course. At the time of the furnace work, I asked about air conditioning. Unfortunately, the ducts in the house were not designed for a/c so a separate system has to be put in. They are now in the process of doing that for me. I recently asked if they could come out and walk the site with me to nail down the details and they enthusiastically did that for me. The return is being installed where an old attic fan is situated and they said they would remove the fan and old louvers, which was very nice of them. One other thing - Cathy in the office has been really responsive and helpful.

From the first meeting with William the owner everything went smoothly. William is very professional as are his installers. They are honest and never let us down. The installation was quite involved and took three days to remove the old system and replace it with new one. Each night they cleaned up. William stopped by each day spending several hours daily after making himself very hands on. From the estimate and measuring of each room to manual specs. to the final clean up everything went great. I highly recommend Air 1

I found this contractor on Google during the summer of 2012 when my AC unit quit working in the 90 degree heat. The existing unit could not cool below 78 degrees on a hot day which is uncomfortable. The first technician that come out immediately recommended replacing the indoor coils and outdoor condenser unit without doing any other investigation on this 20 year old condo building. He ignored other factors that I later found out were contributing to the lack of cooling such as the hot attic right above my unit and the poor insulation on the duct work. Considering it was 90 degrees out and me being naive, I agreed to have them replace the AC unit for $4300 plus cost of permits which they said I didn't even need to get (even though required by the town). They came to put the unit in within 2 days which was great. I did find out that they subcontracted some of the work and I didn't even get to meet everyone performing the work. Additionally, the technician installing the indoor unit had to braze the pipes for the new refrigerant and did not turn off the pilot light of my furnace. When a couple drops of the flammable chemical hit the pilot light, it ignited and started a fire in my unit. Thankfully it did not damage anything but the whole place was filled with smoke and I had no choice but to open the windows on a 90 degree hot and humid day. After that carelessness I also found out he did not report the incident to the owner of the company who happens to be his brother. Second, the technician didn't know how to wire the thermostat and new AC unit to my existing furnace. I ended up having to read the manual myself later on and correct the wiring. Even with the brand new AC unit (which was bigger than my old one, 2.5 vs. 3 ton), my condo was still not cooling properly. I called them back and the owner did come out at which time he proceeded to tell me about all the other things that should have been investigated prior to recommending a unit replacement (considering the old unit worked just didn't cool properly in hot weather). They wanted a lot of money to start replacing ductwork and insulation in the attic. At this point I concluded my business with them because I could tell they were just trying to get as much money out of me as possible. The company did not even offer to have my unit cleaned after the fire from the use of the fire extinguisher. I had to clean up all the dust from the fire and even more so did not replace the fire extinguisher they used which was mine. I had to file complaints with the BBB on this contractor. The owner called me and was actually offended that I would do such a thing after the experience I had. He was unprofessional over the phone and as a result refused to fill out energy rebate forms so that I could get a tax credit for the new AC, claiming that I was not eligible. I believe as a consumer I have a right to submit a complaint if needed but they chose to retaliate against me for doing so. Very unprofessional. It got to the point that the owner would not speak to me and their receptionist who answered the phone would do nothing other than hang up on me. A year later, I called another company to come look at the AC because it was not cooling properly. They had to add 4 units of refrigerant to the unit even though I do not have a leak and the unit only holds about 12. What that tells me is that Air 1 LLC did not properly fill the unit when it was installed. After I had the extra refrigerant added, it's been working great. Air 1 LLC is one of the worst contractors I've ever worked with. Their lack of knowledge, expertise, and professionalism should make anyone want to stay away.

Response from Air 1 Heating & Cooling
Air 1 did in fact respond to the service call and sent our service tech out to assist him. during the service call the tech found that the outdoor unit was no longer able to cool, we quoted him for a new unit. Here at Air 1 you as the homeowner are given many different options. he was given the same options that we give all of our homeowners and in fact he is able to cancel his choice. he did not and chose to go with a new unit. the unit was installed within 2 days and was happy at the time of install. at no time did he request that someone look at duct work, insulation of his attic. we in fact could have sent out the owner to look at if he had requested that. the customer did not. we strive to make sure all of our customers are met with the same satisfaction with their choice for their home. if this customer had in fact asked for someone we would be more than happy to schedule someone to come out. as with all our install when they come out of warranty a service contract explaining the maintenance that we can offer to our clients. the customer did not respond to the letters that were sent.

A service tech was sent out the same day I called. I was impressed because we were not contract customers. The compressor was shot and caused the unit to overheat and trip the breaker, plus it was losing Freon. With the age of the heating and cooling units and 4 service calls in the 3 years we have lived here, we decided to replace. Dennis was able to keep the air conditioner running for 3 days until a crew could come and take care of the entire job. The temps were in the high 80's and 90's so we did appreciate having the house cool. The crew arrived on time, were professional, very courteous, considerate and efficient. There was no damage done to walls etc. when they brought the old furnace up from the basement and through the house. They did a wonderful job cleaning up.

After going back and forth with William on possible configurations and sizing, we had him and his crew installed a Trane furnace, a Trane central air and three Fujitsu ductless units. His crew (Carlos, Greg, Arturo, Jermaine, etc) was outstanding. They are hard workers; setting things up carefully in the morning and cleaning up in the afternoon. We had a small issue with the town inspectors and William worked with us to get it straightened out quickly. We have the systems running now for two months -- we are absolutely happy with how things turned out!
Description of Work: We needed to replace our furnace and to install new air conditioning for our two level home. I have contacted several companies for quotes. Replacing the furnace was not a problem. Installing AC with our existing forced air ducts was an issue. William was very patient in working with us to come up with a configuration that cooled our entire home evenly and efficiently without cutting into closets space. Other companies pretty much told us we had no other options. With William help, we decided to go with a central AC unit for the second floor and ductless systems for the first floor.

My AC was not blowing cold air. Service guy came out to my home (townhouse). Was a nice enough man. He ran some test and said that my unit had no coolant and would take 6lbs, more coolant than I expected (2-3 times more)....based on an earlier conversation with I had someone at the company over the phone (I get that, over the phone how do they know? I was given an example of how much coolant a "Mega Mansion" just took at a call the previous week.........which was 6 lbs., same as what the guy said I needed and I live in a small townhouse). I would have been okay if it was more,..at least somewhere in the ballpark, just not 2-3X more than expected at $80lb. First red flag. He then said that it was probably a leak and that I may want to replace the whole unit because if it was a leak, at $80/lb.and if it leaked out right away it would cost a lot of $$ for nothing. Okay, I get that. I said that I couldn't afford a whole new unit so he said "okay" and packed up his tools with no other suggestions/explanation, not a word. ...silence, until I asked him if I owe the "servce fee" and he said "yes, plus tax". That was okay, becasue I knew that I had a service fee whether he did anything or not. I waited inside the house for him to bring the bill in. When he came inside the house I asked him how he knew there was a leak and he said that he would have to perform a "leak test" . At THAT point, I looked at the bill and his "recommendations", he wrote down that he had recommended a "leak test" which he DID NOT , 2nd red Flag. I would have thought, after he said that I should replace the whole unti and I reacted by saying I couldn't afford a new unit that he would have discussed it more with me, the alternative (leak test) or offered an estimate for a new unit. He did/said nothing but pack up his tools to go. I think he just wanted to get out of the rain. After that, I just didn't have a good feeling about dealing with this person that represents Air1.... major trust factor. Based on this list, I see that other people have had good experiences with Air1, I was hoping for the same which is why I selected them, I just did not have a good feeling about the honesty, so I paid for the service call and will call someone else on this list for other opinions and estimates if needed . Maybe I just got a bad service person, but he is the face of Air1 when servicing customers.

From the first visit to discuss my options to the end of the job, I was never disappointed. The owner, William Molina, runs his business like a well oiled machine. His team arrived bright and early to start the job, worked diligently every day and never made a mess. Three days later the job was completed on time and as promised. William took the time to discuss my options, provided a professional itemized estimate, measured every room to ensure that the unit selected was the right tonnage for my home and provided all documentation upon request. This included an up-to-date copy of insurance and license, a list of references and Manual J calculation. What more can I say. I would hire Air 1 Heating and Cooling again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: Air 1 Heating and Cooling installed central air conditioning in our bi-level home. They installed a 2.5 ton condensing unit, 2.5 ton variable speed air handler, electronic air cleaner, digital thermostat, secondary emergency pan, emergency wet switch, main ductwork with R-8 insulation, supply feeds and main return, uni-strut and threaded rod to lift unit off celing joist, condensate lines, white leader pipe for refrigerant lines, removed garbage from premises, installed low voltage wiring and line, charged to manufacturer specs, cleaned the work area and started and tested upon completion.

Very well! Called them in again when my air handler blower motor failed on 7/23 (it was 20 years old). It was due to be 100 degrees on 7/24 and it was an emergency. Greg was there within 90 minutes. Since I had already removed the bad unit, Greg, with his boss' approval, helped me to get the old motor off the blower and told me where to get replacement (which I did) since they did not have an available motor saving me much $$. There was no charge for this help. Great guys - easy to talk to - willing to help you save $ when you can do some yourself. Very professional in their own work.
Description of Work: Diagnosed AC issue (bad compressor). Recycled old R-22 coolant. Installed customer-supplied new compressor/condenser unit (purchased on e-bay) and got system up and running. Excellent knowledge and service by technician Greg. They charged a pre-negotiated fee for the work, and standard rates for added R-22 refrigerant. Quality of work was excellent.
