Brian was great from my first contact. I had emailed him the night before and he had replied by 5:30am the next day. We had not yet closed on the house but had access for an afternoon and we wanted to have a floor person in to give us an estimate. Brian was able to come that afternoon. He explained many things to us along the way. He was able to start the work the day after the closing. He was very accommodating when we had a surprise cement floor under some carpeting and was able to squeeze in work on our garage, painting and patching a previous leak. He finished super quickly, provided updates every day and was very neat. He was extremely cognizant of the fact that we wanted to get into the house as soon as possible. I would recommend him and use him again in the future. I received his name from a friend who also used him but I also read the Angies List reviews. I was not disappointed.

Brian did an amazing job. We were looking for a quick turnaround so it could be completed before we moved in and he was able to complete the job within 10 days of giving us the quote. To meet our time requirements he even came in and worked on the weekend.
Our house required more than a little TLC from a professional and he delivered. He had to repair/replace some existing hard woord and install new hardwoord but you wouldn't be able to tell. It all looks as if it was a brand new installation. He even did the stairs and hand rails to match the custom stain he did for us. What I appreciated most was the time he took to explain everything he was doing. As a new home owner and a curious person I had a lot of questions which he gladly took the time to answer. I would highly recommend him to anyone who was looking to have hardwood floors installed or refinished. The house is completely transformed thanks to his work. There's a reason he's the top rated in his field on Angie's List, a true craftsman and pleasure to work with.

Brian made our deck look brand new and managed the work in a way that encourages me to support local small businesses v. sub-contracting through one of the big box places.
Brian provided a detailed quote and took the time to walk me carefully through his proposal.   Brian scheduled the job quickly and
finished on schedule.  Brian stayed within the quote even though he proactively looked for ways to make our deck better and safer.  I am used to vendors trying to find "issues" to increase the return on the job, so when Brian did this to make the work better within budget it was refreshing.  Brian knew the relevant codes and made sure our deck exceeded them and looked terrific at the same.  Brian
communicated what he was doing and why throughout the job and delivered everything promised.
We are extremely pleased with the work performed and would not hesitate to recommend this company to anyone.

From the first phone call to the last conversation Brian (the owner) was very attentive and always available. He was punctual and worked around our schedule with very little advance notice. He went above and beyond to make our floors look amazing. We had several estimates prior to meeting with Brian, but his confident assessment of the work led us to go with him. He was able to fix areas of the flooring that other companies insisted would require removing and replacing large sections of the wood. The cost and time estimates he gave us were right on the mark. He and his team worked through the weekend, and actually did more than we contracted them for in order to fix preexisting woodwork issues at no cost. The end result end is beautiful. He and his team were consummate professionals. Thank you again Brian!.

Brian and his team did an amazing job installing beautiful wood floors in our foyer and refinishing the rest of the wood floors in our home.  He took great care and attention to details while also moving though the process as quickly as he could.  He did fantastic work and we would certainly recommend him to friends and neighbors.

Grain Flooring sanded and recoated our floors in our new home. Brian had one of his guys, Walter, come and handle the job. Walter did a great job tackling our three bedrooms, stairs, living room, and dining room. We did three coats of the poly and when it dried, we found that the floor was a tad rough. Brian and Walter explained that it could be because of the humidity in the house and it may need a bit to settle in and dry. Regardless, they still did an extra courtesy coat. We are happy with our floors. It still has a slight texture to it, but I think it'll smoothen with a little bit of time. Walter was so friendly, professional, and knowledgable. Brian checked in frequently to make sure everything was going smoothly. Right off the bat, we felt like we were in good hands and Grain Flooring did not disappoint.

Brain came on time like scheduled, we where on a deadline and he assured us multiply times that we will be able to meet our deadline. As soon as we agreed on a price and to start the project Brain came in and started the work, from the moment he started to the day he finished, Brain was in consistent  contact. He was very helpful and professional with the flooring. When he was done I noticed certain things not finished in a professional matter; Door frames were severally damaged, some of the floor molding he removed wasnt placed correctly, As soon he got his money he left and never addressed the matters. Overall, floors were done really nice, but the overall job was OK.

We met with several general contractors (as we were also looking for painting and other light renovation work) and flooring specialists given the needs of our flooring job.  Specifically, we were looking for someone who could address the leveling issue in a thoughtful manner.  Some contractors just shrugged their shoulders and suggested we leave it as is (one suggested to put the carpet back down).  Others suggested pouring leveling cement (which seemed a terrible idea over 700 square feet, not to mention a poor substrate for hardwood floor).
Of everyone we met, I was most impressed with how Brian from Grain Floors approached the situation.  He offered us a thoughtful alternative ? he proposed to build up using plywood and roofing paper throughout the entire floor to alleviate the leveling issues.  Brian was committed to offering us a good solution, but was also a pragmatist.  He told us right off the bat that his approach wouldn?t leave the entire floor perfectly level, but it would be a dramatic improvement and not noticeable to the naked eye (as the current situation was).  Most importantly, the floor would be level enough that tall furniture would not propose a safety hazard by tilting.  He believed this was a worthwhile compromise because we would be able to lay the flooring the entire length of our second floor without using any reducers, which increased the aesthetics of the final product in our minds.
While I was pleasantly surprised we found someone to help solve our unique problem, and I was thrilled at Brian?s flexibility to complete the project in stages as we had wished.  Not surprisingly given his credentials, Brian was busy on several ongoing projects.  However, he worked with us to schedule a start date in the reasonable near term to allow our entire project (eg,
painting, other renovation work) to proceed as planned.
Unlike other contractors I have hired in the past, Brian showed up for work at the exact time he indicated.  He also started his day early to get in a solid day?s work ? a work ethic I appreciated.  He worked very efficiently and actually completed the first stage faster than he had anticipated.
Brian was very easy to reach and very prompt in returning voicemails.  We had no problems whatsoever scheduling him to return to complete the second and final stages of our project, and in each case he finished the work by the day he said he would or earlier.  Of course, the work site was kept clean, as one would expect from a professional.
Last, but not least, his quote for the work was incredibly reasonable given the constraints we placed upon him.
The more I spoke with Brian, the more it became clear that he was a true craftsmen in his trade.  He made suggestions about how to lay out the floor that went against how we initially wanted it, but he convinced us and now seeing the finished product it was clear he was right all along.  My parents and I are very happy with the finished job.  I was so pleased with Brian?s work that I asked that he return for a 1-day job to fix something with our stairs.  I would certainly look for Brian?s help again in future projects and would recommend him without hesitation.

Brian and his team did a fantastic job refinishing all of the hardwood flooring in our home in just one week.  When we bought the house it had badly damaged carpeting and underneath was a very tired and damaged pine hardwood floor.  Within a week they had the floors looking like new.  Choosing the stain color was very simple, we went to Home Depot and picked out the wood sample we liked and gave it to Brian, he was then able to work his magic and perfectly match our floors to the sample provided.
All of my calls were immediately returned and an update was provided on a regular basis so that we always knew where we were in the process.
While the price was marginally higher than other competitors the service and attention to detail were well worth it.  Considering we will be walking on and seeing these floors for years to come it was worth every penny.  I highly recommend!

Just got off the phone talking to Brian.  Wow, after calling numerous other contractors from Angie's List for other jobs (i.e., painting), this was the first when someone straight off the bat started trying to help us out and figure out what was best for our new townhouse we bought.  He explained the complications of the job (refinishing engineered hardwood that was previously installed by former owner).  And, for 15 minutes explained how the engineered hardwood was most likely installed, how much thickness it probably had, how we could save money here and there, etc.
My husband and I pretty much decided after talking to him that the job was too expensive for us at this point.  But, what a great professional!  Nice to see someone who is willing to help out and share his knowledge.

Our 20' x 20' cedar deck (14 years old) finish was ruined by a previous handyman who did a lousy job of staining the deck/railing/steps.
We contacted several contractors from Angie's list to repair and restore the deck. One of the contractors said the deck would have to be replaced ($12,000!). Another said it would be $ 6000. One of the contractors, highly rated on Angie's list, did not follow-up after our first call to him! Brian of Grain Flooring looked over the job, gave me a full description of what he was going to do and gave me a firm quote for $ 4,000. Right off the bat, I liked the way he approached the job - telling us the deck was in good enough shape to repair and how he was going to restore it. He was going to do all the work or be onsite to supervise it. I liked that very much. I awarded him the job within a few days.
He started the job right away. Even though I was traveling, he worked with my wife in choosing the color and working out some details. My wife told me while I was away, that she was very happy with Brian and the way the job was going. He did leave us messages and responded to all our calls and took care of any little details she asked him to take care of.
When I returned from my travel, everything but the deck floor was finished. I pointed out a couple of boards that were questionable and he gladly replaced them right away. Then, he sanded the floor without creating any "dust mess". He stained the deck twice with a cedar color stain that we had chosen. The spindles, the railing and deck floor, all looked very uniform, considering the age of the deck.
Brain was very professional and courteous, and completed the job in a timely manner. His workers were very careful as well. Even though we asked him take care of a few extra details and touch-ups, he did not ask for extra and completed the job for the quoted price.
We were very pleased with the job and are already thinking of hiring him for some other projects.

Brian was one of my final 2 vendors shortlisted for the work to refinish the floors for our new home.
Our floors were in good shape and we needed a stronger shade than the current one. All estimates were provided on phone/email and only with the help of pictures we had shared. Brian was very responsive and detail oriented from our very first conversation. He was very thorough in explaining the process involved and took time to understand our needs.
One on the job he was punctual and his team was always on time for the job first thing in the morning. We were never home when the work was done but checked each evening and Brian provided us daily updates on the phone. The trash was promptly out on each day by his team and the place left clean.
Being first time home owners we were anxious about the whole process but Brian's work made us confident with a job well done.
He even made some suggestions on issues we had in the bathroom and with our closet doors
We are happy with Brian's workmanship and professionalism, would gladly recommend him to anyone needing floor services.

Brian from Grain Flooring is a true craftsman.  After meeting with 3 hardwood flooring specialists that were all highly-rated on AngiesList, my wife and I decided to go with Brian from Grain Flooring to refinish existing hardwood on the first floor of our new house and add new hardwood in the upstairs master bedroom and hallway.
While the other flooring contractors quickly ran through the house taking measurements, Brian took the time to answer our questions, point out the finer details of hardwood, and helped guide our selection of the type of wood to choose.
Brian's work product is also great.  He did a fantastic job of making our old floors downstairs look brand new, and our new floors upstairs match the original 60+ year old floors downstairs.
We had also been meeting with a tile contractor to re-do a tile entryway, and again here Brian demonstrated a superior knowledge of how to make it look great AND be as durable as possible (it was quite involved -- he cut out the old subfloor and put down a new subfloor, poured new concrete, and then put meticulously laid our tile into a beuatiful pattern).  I was hesitant at first to have a "hardwood guy" do tile, but the end result is beautiful and flows seamlessly into the hardwood that he refinished.
In the end, our 1950's house has stunning floors that look brand new and yet maintain their original charm and character.  I highly recommend Brian and Grain Flooring!

They were really good!  They had four guys working with him, and everyone worked like their butts were on fire.  Everyone knew what they were supposed to do and they came in and worked fast.  They finished the tough work in three days and finished up in four days.  When speaking with him on the phone he asked how old my house was, when I told him he guessed what type of wood I had on each floor.  Sure enough he was correct.  Very few people have that knowledge base.  In summary, they were fast, thorough, on time, dependable, and I highly recommend them!

"Thank you for your review. When you have an older house like yours, pine floors can be difficult and if you don't have a specialist like myself working on them, results could be disastrouse. I'm glad I had the opportunity to bring these special floors back to life. Best regards, Brian"

Brian and his helper arrived early and on time, carried all the furniture out of the room, then started this job. I walk into this room, our Family Room, and smile every time. He did a fabulous job, cut up all the old carpeting, tied it, and put it out for the trash pick up.
Brian's work  ethic is 150% pleasing the customer. I would recommend him to anyone who asks and hope this review is taken seriously by potential customers. Service providers like Brian are very hard to come by. My floor is gorgeous! Thanks, Brian.

Brian and his crew were very professional and did beautiful work.  Brian checked in with me on a daily basis to let me know the progress of the project and even sent pictures.  The craftsmanship and detail of the worked performed was excellent.  Each spindle on the staircase was removed and individually stained and refinished to insure a perfect outcome.  This struck me as going above and beyond what was necessary to complete the job. Brian took the time to explain the process thoroughly, which is why I hired his company rather than another company that offered the same services at a lower price.  Brian even returned after the job was done to help me move furniture and do minor touch-up work.  All-in-all a great experience.  You can't go wrong with Wood Grain Flooring!

After getting several estimates it  was clear that Brian was the best choice for the job. He showed an acute attention to detail and an honest interest in doing the best job possible for us. He was very helpful in describing the pros and cons of our options and helped us find a wood that both looks great and fit the budget. Once the actual work began, Brian was always on time and took care of business like a true professional. True to his word he had the work done in two days time and we could not be happier with the end result! Although his price was a little more than the competition, we felt it was money well spent. When you're talking about floors you'll be walking on for decades to come, you definitely want the experience, expertise, and quality work that Brian brings to the table.

Given that we work in quality control and dentistry, details are expectations in the work and service we contract.  The owner, Brian, showed up on time for our initial meeting.  Having past expereince with hardwood floor refinishing, and knowing how the job needs to be done correctly, Brian accurately described in detail how the job was to be done.  He was honest, and fair with pricing.  He advised me he would start the job on a Tuesday at 7:30 am and the job would be completed within 5 days.  He arrived at the house at 7:00 am, called me each day with an update on progress. He included the closets, sanded and polyed up to the molding, and Noted with the last coat that there were bubbles in the poly, and he called to tell me that he would buff them out and apply a 4th coat (which was not in the original contract).  He could ave ignored it and hoped that it would go unnoticed, but he insisted on doing the extra work and completing it properly.  Brian completed the job earlier than expected, met with us on a Sunday to inspect the finalized project, and even gave us advice/help with other things our contractor did not do properly.  I found out that he also does carpentry; and with the level of pride in his work, expertise, attention to detail, and honesty, I plan to contact him with future projects on remodeling.
Key points:
-owner is on premises at all times and works in a timely fashion
-you receive daily updates
-knowledgeable and experienced
** I'm having difficulty uploading photos, but feel free to contact Brian and I am willing to share them.

My husband and I have been wanting to start our next renovation project and had a lot of questions. I called and the man from grain stopped by the same day. He was extremely knowledgable, and professional. He talked me out of doing a few things that would be a waste and that we wouldn't see a return on. We have not decided on what room we will start on yet, but when we do I will be calling Grain back. The estimates and quotes he give me were extremely competitive, but the reason we will use him in the future was his honesty. Highly recommend.

Amazing. I would never use or recommend anyone else for floors! I interviewed several flooring guys, Brian's price was very reasonable but not the cheapest... however, he was THE MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE about all the details. Also, Brian let us know upfront about potential costs that could increase his estimate (e.g. if the wood under this part of the carpet is XYZ, I may have to do this to make it look the same as the rest of the floor). He also kept us informed about the job all the way through-- what was accomplished each day, what he planned to accomplish with his team the next day-- which made my life so much easier. He recommended cost-saving solutions for us, and he got the job done quickly. Seriously, everyone who has come into our house has told us how great the floors look and you can't even see where the patched-up/repaired spots are because he matched the stain so well! I could not be happier with the results. I would use Grain Flooring again in a heartbeat.

Brian was great, and we're very happy with the results. I found Brian on Angie's List, called him, left a message, and had my call promptly returned. Brian was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. He showed up when he said he would, and his crew were also professional. We loved that the owner and person doing the quoting was the same person doing the work.
The refinished floors look amazing. I was very impressed with the color matching. Maybe we have a standard color, and this isn't as big a deal as I'm going to make it, but...other than the fact that the polyurethane is brand new, you CAN NOT tell the difference between the newly refinished floors and our previously finished floors. This is true even where the newly refinished hallway had to be blended into our previously finished master bedroom. I haven't tried this, but you'd have to be on at least your hands and knees, and maybe closer, to see "the line" where the two finishes meet. The edges were done nicely, Brian and his crew sanded far enough to remove the stains, and everything looks great.
Three things about our experience that stand out:
- Before we went to bed the day Brian and his crew finished sanding and staining, my wife spilled water on the floor, which left a noticeable mark. Despite this being entirely our fault, Brian promptly fixed the issue with no complaints.
- At my request, Brian and his crew removed the saddles under the doors, again with no complaints, even though this meant more sanding for them and I hadn't originally requested this.
- I forgot about a closet nose piece I had removed prior to having the floors refinished. When I "rediscovered" it on Brian's last day at our house and asked him to refinish it, he took care of it. Again, no complaints.
Overall, I would definitely hire Brian again.
Response from Grain Flooring

"Thanks for trusting me with your specialty floors. As far as the extra work, this is something that separates me from other companies- I do my best to make each person happy- thank you for appreciating the extras. All the best, Brian"
