Our house required more than a little TLC from a professional and he delivered. He had to repair/replace some existing hard woord and install new hardwoord but you wouldn't be able to tell. It all looks as if it was a brand new installation. He even did the stairs and hand rails to match the custom stain he did for us. What I appreciated most was the time he took to explain everything he was doing. As a new home owner and a curious person I had a lot of questions which he gladly took the time to answer. I would highly recommend him to anyone who was looking to have hardwood floors installed or refinished. The house is completely transformed thanks to his work. There's a reason he's the top rated in his field on Angie's List, a true craftsman and pleasure to work with.
Brian provided a detailed quote and took the time to walk me carefully through his proposal.  Brian scheduled the job quickly and
finished on schedule.  Brian stayed within the quote even though he proactively looked for ways to make our deck better and safer. I am used to vendors trying to find "issues" to increase the return on the job, so when Brian did this to make the work better within budget it was refreshing. Brian knew the relevant codes and made sure our deck exceeded them and looked terrific at the same. Brian
communicated what he was doing and why throughout the job and delivered everything promised. Â
We are extremely pleased with the work performed and would not hesitate to recommend this company to anyone.
Of everyone we met, I was most impressed with how Brian from Grain Floors approached the situation. He offered us a thoughtful alternative ? he proposed to build up using plywood and roofing paper throughout the entire floor to alleviate the leveling issues. Brian was committed to offering us a good solution, but was also a pragmatist. He told us right off the bat that his approach wouldn?t leave the entire floor perfectly level, but it would be a dramatic improvement and not noticeable to the naked eye (as the current situation was). Most importantly, the floor would be level enough that tall furniture would not propose a safety hazard by tilting. He believed this was a worthwhile compromise because we would be able to lay the flooring the entire length of our second floor without using any reducers, which increased the aesthetics of the final product in our minds.
While I was pleasantly surprised we found someone to help solve our unique problem, and I was thrilled at Brian?s flexibility to complete the project in stages as we had wished. Not surprisingly given his credentials, Brian was busy on several ongoing projects. However, he worked with us to schedule a start date in the reasonable near term to allow our entire project (eg,
painting, other renovation work) to proceed as planned.
Unlike other contractors I have hired in the past, Brian showed up for work at the exact time he indicated. He also started his day early to get in a solid day?s work ? a work ethic I appreciated. He worked very efficiently and actually completed the first stage faster than he had anticipated.
Brian was very easy to reach and very prompt in returning voicemails. We had no problems whatsoever scheduling him to return to complete the second and final stages of our project, and in each case he finished the work by the day he said he would or earlier. Of course, the work site was kept clean, as one would expect from a professional.
Last, but not least, his quote for the work was incredibly reasonable given the constraints we placed upon him.
The more I spoke with Brian, the more it became clear that he was a true craftsmen in his trade. He made suggestions about how to lay out the floor that went against how we initially wanted it, but he convinced us and now seeing the finished product it was clear he was right all along. My parents and I are very happy with the finished job. I was so pleased with Brian?s work that I asked that he return for a 1-day job to fix something with our stairs. I would certainly look for Brian?s help again in future projects and would recommend him without hesitation.
All of my calls were immediately returned and an update was provided on a regular basis so that we always knew where we were in the process.
While the price was marginally higher than other competitors the service and attention to detail were well worth it. Considering we will be walking on and seeing these floors for years to come it was worth every penny. I highly recommend!
My husband and I pretty much decided after talking to him that the job was too expensive for us at this point. But, what a great professional! Nice to see someone who is willing to help out and share his knowledge.
We contacted several contractors from Angie's list to repair and restore the deck. One of the contractors said the deck would have to be replaced ($12,000!). Another said it would be $ 6000. One of the contractors, highly rated on Angie's list, did not follow-up after our first call to him! Brian of Grain Flooring looked over the job, gave me a full description of what he was going to do and gave me a firm quote for $ 4,000. Right off the bat, I liked the way he approached the job - telling us the deck was in good enough shape to repair and how he was going to restore it. He was going to do all the work or be onsite to supervise it. I liked that very much. I awarded him the job within a few days.
He started the job right away. Even though I was traveling, he worked with my wife in choosing the color and working out some details. My wife told me while I was away, that she was very happy with Brian and the way the job was going. He did leave us messages and responded to all our calls and took care of any little details she asked him to take care of.
When I returned from my travel, everything but the deck floor was finished. I pointed out a couple of boards that were questionable and he gladly replaced them right away. Then, he sanded the floor without creating any "dust mess". He stained the deck twice with a cedar color stain that we had chosen. The spindles, the railing and deck floor, all looked very uniform, considering the age of the deck.
Brain was very professional and courteous, and completed the job in a timely manner. His workers were very careful as well. Even though we asked him take care of a few extra details and touch-ups, he did not ask for extra and completed the job for the quoted price.
We were very pleased with the job and are already thinking of hiring him for some other projects.
Our floors were in good shape and we needed a stronger shade than the current one. All estimates were provided on phone/email and only with the help of pictures we had shared. Brian was very responsive and detail oriented from our very first conversation. He was very thorough in explaining the process involved and took time to understand our needs.
One on the job he was punctual and his team was always on time for the job first thing in the morning. We were never home when the work was done but checked each evening and Brian provided us daily updates on the phone. The trash was promptly out on each day by his team and the place left clean.
Being first time home owners we were anxious about the whole process but Brian's work made us confident with a job well done.
He even made some suggestions on issues we had in the bathroom and with our closet doors
We are happy with Brian's workmanship and professionalism, would gladly recommend him to anyone needing floor services.
While the other flooring contractors quickly ran through the house taking measurements, Brian took the time to answer our questions, point out the finer details of hardwood, and helped guide our selection of the type of wood to choose.
Brian's work product is also great. He did a fantastic job of making our old floors downstairs look brand new, and our new floors upstairs match the original 60+ year old floors downstairs.
We had also been meeting with a tile contractor to re-do a tile entryway, and again here Brian demonstrated a superior knowledge of how to make it look great AND be as durable as possible (it was quite involved -- he cut out the old subfloor and put down a new subfloor, poured new concrete, and then put meticulously laid our tile into a beuatiful pattern). I was hesitant at first to have a "hardwood guy" do tile, but the end result is beautiful and flows seamlessly into the hardwood that he refinished.
In the end, our 1950's house has stunning floors that look brand new and yet maintain their original charm and character. I highly recommend Brian and Grain Flooring!
"Being such a detailed oriented guy, I appreciate you review. Also, taking the time to write it when you litterly just had a baby is very much appreciated. All the best to you and your family. Thank you, Brian"
"Thank you for your review. When you have an older house like yours, pine floors can be difficult and if you don't have a specialist like myself working on them, results could be disastrouse. I'm glad I had the opportunity to bring these special floors back to life. Best regards, Brian"
"Thank you for putting your trust in our company and I enjoyed working for you. Best regards, Brian"
Brian's work ethic is 150% pleasing the customer. I would recommend him to anyone who asks and hope this review is taken seriously by potential customers. Service providers like Brian are very hard to come by. My floor is gorgeous! Thanks, Brian.
"I enjoyed working for you, thank you very much!"

The refinished floors look amazing. I was very impressed with the color matching. Maybe we have a standard color, and this isn't as big a deal as I'm going to make it, but...other than the fact that the polyurethane is brand new, you CAN NOT tell the difference between the newly refinished floors and our previously finished floors. This is true even where the newly refinished hallway had to be blended into our previously finished master bedroom. I haven't tried this, but you'd have to be on at least your hands and knees, and maybe closer, to see "the line" where the two finishes meet. The edges were done nicely, Brian and his crew sanded far enough to remove the stains, and everything looks great.
Three things about our experience that stand out:
- Before we went to bed the day Brian and his crew finished sanding and staining, my wife spilled water on the floor, which left a noticeable mark. Despite this being entirely our fault, Brian promptly fixed the issue with no complaints.
- At my request, Brian and his crew removed the saddles under the doors, again with no complaints, even though this meant more sanding for them and I hadn't originally requested this.
- I forgot about a closet nose piece I had removed prior to having the floors refinished. When I "rediscovered" it on Brian's last day at our house and asked him to refinish it, he took care of it. Again, no complaints.
Overall, I would definitely hire Brian again.
"Thanks for trusting me with your specialty floors. As far as the extra work, this is something that separates me from other companies- I do my best to make each person happy- thank you for appreciating the extras. All the best, Brian"
