on the install:
Mike showed up on time and covered the floor with cloth all the way from the door to the utility room. He dismantle my current system and hauled away all of the stuff as part of the process. He then put all new hardware in, went over everything he did and showed me how to use the system. Thank you Mike!
I contacted Hague because he had previously fixed the air conditioning in my home. Tom Hague told me that I could either have the old furnace fixed or I could have it replaced but because of the age of the furnace this was probably going to just be the beginning of a long series of repairs. We had been through a long series of repairs with the previous furnace so we agreed to replace it.
The furnace was replaced with one which on the outside looked exactly like the old one- except that the furnace had been turned ninety degrees so that it could be more easily serviced.
I had the furnace inspected by the township and the installation failed inspection Also with the furnace replaced, it did not seem to be any warmer in the house. The furnace replacement took place in April and by May it was too warm to need a furnace.
At the beginning of October, Tom Hague returned and corrected the deficiency in the installation. Midway through October when we once again needed heat, we discovered that the pilot light in the furnace would not come on. We once again called Hague and he came out and made some minor adjustment. It did not fix the problem.
As you probably know, NJ experienced Superstorm Sandy at the end of October. We had no power for four days. After the electricity was turned on, we once again called Hague and told him that the pilot light was not coming on and we had no heat unless we manually lit the burner. Tom Hague did not come at the time that had been agreed on but did come much later in the day. We were not home, but someone (Justine) was here to let him in. Tom Hague questioned her as to whether we had had this problem before Superstorm Sandy- and she said that she was certain that we did. When we arrived home the heat was on. Justine told me that Hague had spent maybe 5 minutes fixing the heat.
The following morning it was freezing cold in the house and once again the pilot light would not come on. We called Hague and he told me to turn the Emergency switch off and then turn it on. We did this and the heat came on. He told me that there was something wrong with the motherboard in the power box and that when we turned the Emergency switch off it caused the electronics to reset. He then went into this whole spiel about how the problem must have been caused by Sandy. I told him that we had had the problem before Sandy and also that we had no flooding, no water damage, no damage to the house or any place else and all the other appliances in the house- including two computers- worked fine. He said that he would stop by Monday afternoon. I never heard from him again although I called him every day that week and left a message. He never returned any of the messages and never showed up to fix the furnace.
We contacted the manufacturer of the furnace- US Boiler. They told us to go on their website and find a contractor in our area who would come out to look at the furnace. They stated that they would stand behind their warranty and replace any part necessary at no charge. We called MTP plumbing who sent a technician. The technician tested every electrical system in the boiler and
identified the component which ignites the pilot light as being defective. However he does not normally service this brand of furnace and did not have the parts for it in his truck. He was able to do a temporary fix to make the furnace ignite in response to the thermostat and we are currently awaiting Fed Ex delivery of the parts from US Boiler. The charge for his diagnosis of the problem with the furnace (including installation of the parts when they finally arrive) was $ 334.
