Dennis was very knowledgeable, patient, and helpful. Dennis?s crew started and finished on time, working meticulously throughout the week. Screws were installed to eliminate squeaks in the subfloor, uneven areas were leveled, etc. There was little waste and the cuts were VERY precise!! There were a couple of small things that had to be fixed, but Dennis handled the matters promptly with integrity. I have referred RTFG to my cousin and they also did a beautiful job there as well!
The second job was done in August. They worked with me to find just the right flooring. Again the two men were delightful and professional. The floor is properly installed and all the finishing touches make the room look fantastic.
The company provides quality service and product. I enthusiastically recommend them to others.
Enter Ron The Floor Guy. The company was recommended to us through a friend but were we hesitant due to the fact the previous contractor was so bad. Rolando came out and spent hours with my fiancé, looking over the work and seeing what he could do. My fiancé felt totally comfortable with him and he answered all the questions we had.
We ended up just starting over with sanding based on his recommendations. We were glad we did! The floors came out amazing and looked like a sheet of glass when they were done. His crew was in and out in a week and they filled in the nail marks and gaps and took care of the problem areas the other contractor had left.
Its been a few months and the floors still look great. My fiancé has even called Rolando on a couple different occasions to ask about upkeep and concerns and he still answered all questions without a problem.
The only issue were are having is with decorative trim on the floors. We we told by original contractor that it was walnut but have since come to believe it is Kerub (spelling?) a softer wood that does not hold up as well based on what Rolando has said. It scratches easy by the dogs but doesn't look awful. Next time we go to buff/ redo another coat of poly will be applied to protect areas.
All in all very happy. Took a job on that they didn't start and still made it look like it was supposed to. Will use in the future and recommend.
1) Matched stain for the railing and stair treds
2) showed up when they said they would
Things they did poorly:
1) Hardwood has gaps all over the house. They filled the ones I saw initially with putty of some kind but I keep seeing more and more the closer I look despite having a humidifier and keeping the humidity at recommended levels. I feel like the boards were not installed as tightly as they should have been. The flooring was part of a larger project and the work men seemed stressed that we had other crews in the house at the same time. It felt to me like they wanted to rush to get done and out instead of doing it right.
2) The crew they sent did not speak English well and I found communicating with them to be very difficult. Spoke with their boss mostly by phone but he did not come regularly to the house.
3) Some of the flooring got damages after they left (not their fault). I called back a couple of times to get them to come out and repair it. They told me "no problem, no problem" but I never heard from them again. My contractor was going to pay them since he damaged the floor. He called them also to explain what happened but they didn't call him back either.
UPDATE: In response to the contractor's baffling note I have the following to add.
1) The notion that the flooring should go in after the kitchen when the flooring is going under the cabinets is absurd. The other work we were having done in the house followed the flooring guys. Some of it was base molding, which again has to be done after the floor goes in. We also replaced all of the interior doors in the house which has to be done after the floor goes in.
So, yes there were other crews in the house at the same time, but not working in the same area. Even if they were it isn't an excuse for gaps. What's your point Dennis? Did they distract your guys and they couldn't concentrate? Were they physically blocking you guys from checking multiple boards to find ones that lined up? Exactly how are you "closing the house" in that situation? You were "at our mercy"? How terribly horrible for you. My heart bleeds. Really.
2) I purchased Bruce Armstrong pre-finished flooring. Style: CM5745y Color: Maple Cappuccino Coverage
Look up the reviews yourself. It was not the most expensive but it was not "cheap". They simply didn't take the time to line up the boards that matched. It was shotty hurried work plain and simple. This is evidenced by the fact that a lot of what went in went in well when they were taking their time. I also have 3 extra boxes of flooring, so you be the judge of whether I had enough for them to find ones that matched. If it was actually manufacturer defect of some boards tell me it was 3 boxes worth. Even if it was, there are 3 unopened boxes. I'll say it again. 3 UNOPENED BOXES. You tell me if they took the time to check the flooring for boards that lined up. Go ahead.
3) There are gaps more that a 1/6.
4) Those guys very well may speak some English but they don't speak conversational English well enough to communicate details. Details in a construction project are very important. The foreman (Rolando) was the guy I spoke with on the phone. He spoke English. He did stop by in the beginning but not during the majority of the job and not at the end. When he was coming to the house he let me know. There were no secret visits. The guys doing the work are the ones I'm talking about. They were the ones in my house everyday. Rolando wasn't. Additionally, and unrelated to the language issue Rolando even said at one point that those guys are his normal staining crew and not the normal crew that does installations. That was my understanding from that particular conversation, however perhaps I misunderstood. That was the impression he gave me. If that is true then that explains the gaps also.
5) The repair they came back to do was a repair along the edge of the floor where a board was not nailed in properly. This was their fault. They shouldn't get any special credit for fixing it. This was the ONLY repair that was done. There was not work that they did that was to "fix scratches from other trades". NONE. ZERO. In regard to the flooring that was damaged after they were done which I stated earlier was NOT their fault, I called them up and spoke to Rolando about it. I told them that I would pay them to come out and fix it. Rolando said "ok, I'll see when we have some time and we'll come out to take a look". I never heard from them again. This was work that my other contractor was going to pay them for because he damaged the floor. I clearly stated that in my original review. I would have happily paid them to fix if they had called me back. If they didn't want to then they shouldn't have said they would.
"Just to respond to this customer's complaints. 1. The customer bought his own wood, which wasn't milled to perfection. There were some boards 1/16 of an inch off creating gaps, which we had to puddy. We didn't buy the wood but we installed the best we could considering the circumstances. If the customer wanted a better flooring, the customer probably should have bought it from us. In the end, the customer got the wood floor that he paid for. 2. I am the project manager on majority of our jobs and I don't speak Spanish. I have worked with this particular foreman for 10 years with RTFG. The foreman on the job speaks English but has a Spanish Accent, just as an American traveling to Latin America would have an North American accent. I apologize if the customer couldn't pick up his accent. I find it very easy. This is 2015 and we're in the United States, the melting pot of the world. Since the job was over an hour away, we communicated with our foreman daily and did stop by multiple times to see job progress. The homeowner wasn't always home to see that. We work during normal business hours. 3. In construction, it's common knowledge, that the floor guy and/or painter should close the house. The homeowner/contractor? ran the job backwards from the start and we were at their mercy. Installing a prefinished floor with 4 other trades on site isn't recommended but we're not going to start the job acting like we know it all or that the working environment is chaotic. Instead, we put our best foot forward with a smile on our face and completed the job even though we were working around other tradesman constantly looking to work in the space we're working. We work for a lot of successful contractors who follow a certain template on how to run a good job. I wish we recommended this guideline to the homeowner. The homeowner called us back to replace some boards due to scratches caused by other trades. The homeowner failed to mention that we DID RETURN to replace THESE boards FREE OF CHARGE. In this review is the first I'm hearing of MORE boards needing replacement and of the multiple calls being made to make replacement. I've never responded to one of these things before because to be honest I haven't really had to. The reason I respond to this is because I believe there's a lesson to be learned. If you buy your own cheap wood and run the job improperly, ignoring our suggestions, don't blame your floor guy if your floor is messed up. We operate 25-30 jobs a week with 90% of jobs being through word of mouth(for 20 years) We are not a PERFECT company by any means, but we try our best to be. We have a policy that the customer is always right, but in this case, the homeowners own mistakes is what contributed to his displeasure with the job. Dennis Dube RON THE FLOOR GUY, LLC"
Workers were very neat and did an excellent job- consulted with me on a couple of ideas to ensure install was done to my satisfaction. Did the job quickly and beautifuly. Cleaned up and removed waste once job was done. They were very careful handling the laminate so I now have enough excess to return for a refund.
Will recommend to my friends and family in the area. At some point when my wood floors need to be refinished I know who to call.
Also might add- Ron the floor guy's price with removal of the carpeting previously in place was nearly half of what Lumber Liquidators was charging to sub out the job.
He kept smirking at me throughout the discussion of what I would like to do to the deck. Throughout the discussion which I believe was simply an intelligent interchange, he smirked rudely as if to say and quot;I know better.and quot; he even said and quot;my jacket should say SON of Ron the Floor Guyand quot;. And finally this j****** walked away completely! Rude and ignorant of how to provide customer service and arrogant to think that the customer doesn't know what they want or what they are doing!
This vendor should not be on Angie's List.
Angie's List needs to start screening these vendors more thoroughly because I have found that the free services like ServiceMaster are just as effective---it is still a roll of the dice to find a vendor that is good, no matter what service you use.
"Ron the Floor Guy takes great pride in offering excellent customer service and has been honored with the “Super Service Award” for the last 2 years on Angie’s List. We are a company with 18 employees and Ron’s son has been working closely with our family business for 10 years."
