This review is for a project done last March 2014. I waited for the review to see what changes are going to happen given the different elements the house is exposed to during this changing season. The result was perfect. The house has gotten a lot of compliments. The crew that did my house were very efficient and professional. They work fast, they clean the house each day they finish work and they are very patient as I was having a hard time deciding on the color. They also repaired a broken garage door panel which saved me thousands of dollars from completely replacing it. I would definitely hire them again should I need them in the future.

Mr Gikas was knowledgeable, responsive and respectful in his conversations with my husband. His price quote ended up being the lowest we received from 3 service providers, but we ended up choosing the contractor that my husband felt best understood our expectations for the yankee gutters.

The Gikas rep was great. His team was able to get the job done quickly after a winter ice storm ripped off one of our gutters and took a chunk of the house with it. The guys who showed up worked quickly and did good work. Unfortunately the new gutter that they installed didn't match any of the other gutters on the house b/c the other gutters were painted, so Gikas sent out another team as soon as the weather was warm enough and painted the new gutter to match at no extra charge. Very satisfied with their customer service and would definitely use them again.

Gikas firm performed beyond all reasonable expectations under terms of a roofing guarantee accompanying a new roof the firm installed at our home in 2007. George Apostolos was extremely responsive when we sought his help diagnosing source of what we suspected was an ice/snow-caused roof leak causing wet walls in second and third floor bathrooms under the leak. A Gikas worker removed the remaining ice and snow from the roof, found the source of the leak as soon as possible, and immediately repaired the roof. Interior wall remediation work was also beautifully executed as just as soon as conditions permitted.

The rooms were plastered when the house was built in the 1930s. We decided not to wallpaper.  However, we were told that the following procedure would be required if we wanted wallpaper (except the final latex coat.)  The crew moved the furniture; sealed-off the areas with plastic; primed the walls and ceiling with oil based paint; then covered the entire areas with a thin layer of plaster; then sanded it; then reprimed; and finally painted with Benjamin Moore latex paint.  Only one coat of latex was needed.  The crew did a wonderful job at preparing and sealing the rooms for sanding and painting, and no plaster dust came into other areas of the house during the entire process.  The crew was very courteous and professional throughout.  The process took the good part of three days.  The crew took no shortcuts. George was the supervisor.  (On other recent occasions, we also hired Gikas to replace cedar shakes and to paint the exterior of the house.  See separate reviews of that work: all excellent.)

It went well. We had some timing issues as we were trying to get the job done before it got too cold out, so we had to deal with early sunsets and occasionally cold temperatures. The workers were very accommodating regardless.

After getting referrals from neighbors, a friend who's a realtor and reading reviews on Angie's List I obtained 3 bids. Although Gikas came in with the highest bid (excluding the cost of replacing the gutters at the front of the house), they were able to perform all the work I needed done without having to engage another contractor. Their contract was also very comprehensive and covered everything I could think of including a 10 year warranty.
When the exterior painting job and the additional items were completed and my wife and I inspected we were disappointed with the finish. As the house had been covered with about 3 coats of paint before being sanded down to the bare wood we were unprepared that it wouldn't look so smooth, and the grain of the wood would be visible in both the siding and trim. In addition, there were numerous circular marks on the siding from the paint shavers. George Mihalis the owner, wanted us to be happy with the work performed and asked us to make a punch list of anything else we weren't happy with when we inspected. The foreman then returned and filled all the circular marks and the grainy areas on the siding and trim with filler, sanded the surfaces until they were smooth and applied another coat of paint. It was a big job and he had to come numerous times. He also completed all the items on our punch list. George then had us inspect everything again until he had our assurance that we were happy with the work completed. For that reason I've rated Gikas with an A for responsiveness.
Not long after everything was completed the sunporch roof and gutter and the gutters and leaders at the back of the house suffered damage from falling tree branches during Super Storm Sandy.  Gikas was quick to respond to make temporary repairs to the sunporch roof and siding, and to give me an estimate for fixing the damage and replacing the gutters and leaders that I could submit to my insurance company. They also honored the warranty from the original paint job and returned this September to fix a few areas where the paint had bubbled.

Had the pleasure of dealing with George of Gikas Co.  Crews showed up early for job, worked hard, and were very neat and thorough.  Cleaned up each day, (this was a three day job)  and overall would recommend (and did) Gikas to my neighbors.   Enjoyable experience.    Rod Heather   Teaneck  NJ

I've Gikas sign on several front yards, and when I saw Gikas on Angielist.com, I got confident going with Gikas on this job. I contacted the office, and George came out to provide free assesment on the same day. He gave us a reasonable quote for our aged, tired-looking peach colored stucco. He also provided advice on color-picking and things not to do to help us to save cost of repair. A few days after I agreed to the job, his helper, Pedro, committed to doing everything as promised in about a week. We were consulted every step on the way, and bi-way communication is key! We feel lucky to have Pedro. George was there whenever we have questions, and he's punctual on his appointments with us.
I would hire Gikas again for future works.

It is extremely unprofessional to not show or call when you make an appoint with someone. We understand that family emergencies occur, however at least have the common courtesy to let us know you won't make it. The fact that he texted me an hour and a half after the missed appointment also speaks to his unprofessionalism, a phone call would have been more appropriate. We don't want to take a gamble with our money and I don't think anyone else should either. This company just lost over $30000 worth of business.

If you are worried about your and your family's health and the health of the workers, DO NOT use Gikas.  I had done a lead test and found lead paint so I hired Gikas because they have EPA Lead Paint Certification.  I was clear that I did not want the area that tested positive to be sanded - safety was first, appearance second.  However, the worker that was here started to dry sand the lead paint, I asked him to stop but had trouble explaining my concerns as he did not speak English.  The worker was not wearing a mask, my heating vents were not covered and other than the HEPA vacuum, no proper lead paint precautions were taken.  I called the office but did not hear back for 1/2 hour.  When I called again, I was told not to worry, that it was only a small area that they were sanding.  They agreed to not sand at all, but just paint.  When they were finished I found each windowsill had drips & even small dried puddles of paint and the throw cloth had left dust all over the carpet and floors.  I was concerned about the dust containing lead.  Again, if you are worried about your and your family's health and the health of the workers, DO NOT use Gikas.  Even if you don't have lead paint in your house, you don't want them bringing it in your house on dusty drop clothes.
Response from Gikas Painting, Roofing and Restoration

"We were to paint the small room upstairs that costumer said it had tested for lead and it came back positive and a small part of hallway downstairs that had new sheetrock and therefore no lead. There was a very small area(aproximately 1-2 square feet) at the corner of the room ceiling that the worker found some paint falling apart. We had covered the entire room including any furniture with plastic tarps, we had the Hepa vaccuum. We know we werent even suppossed to follow any regulations of EPA since we were to only paint(encapsulate) that room without disturbing the paint. The ceiling was aproximately 80 square feet. There was absolutely no sanding done on the walls or trims. The worker found the paint failing in that area which is definitely several times smaller than 6 square feet which is the number where EPA regulations are trigered and he used the hose of the Hepa vaccuums to collect any dust or chips that resulted from disturbing that small area. Should l had not addressed that area the paint would be falling apart anyway exposing costumer's family to further problems;it wasnt only about appearance. I was actually there in less than an hour if costumer remembers. I have a full documentation including pictures that shows we had covered everything. We cleaned and vaccuumed thoroughly after the work was done. We take the lead issue seriously ; we are certified by EPA and the workers are trained to follow all protocols. In this case we had taken all precautious meassures (covering,Hepa vaccuums etc) even if such a process wasnt warranted by the squarage of area that we ended up disturbing. [member name removed]; Why should l get C for the price? I think that $600 was a very good price to paint one room and one hallway. It was a neighbor's price. Why should l get F for the quality? We have professional painters that have painted so many houses.I dont pick them from the corner at Home Depot. After all think about the relativity of the quality when you want me to paint a room without preparation/sanding. Why should l get F for responsiveness as l was there myself within an hour after you placed the complaint call.I live only 100 yards away from you(right around the corner) so how can l be not responsive? Any way;i am here if you need me for any other projects or just for advise for any home improvement that you want to make.Just feel free to ask me.At least we can still be good neighbors."

George, the owner, was quite pleasant to deal with in regards to discussing the project and what needed to be done. The crew was able to start quickly and did a good job. My biggest issue with the project was that I told George very explicitly that if the crew found any other rotten boards beyond the ones I initially identified to replace them without waiting to confirm with me and I would pay the difference. The painters started without waiting for his carpenter to arrive and painted over some wood I had specifically told George I wanted to be replaced. When the carpenter did arrive (he came 5 days into the project), he only replaced the 3 floor boards initially called out and broke tips off of others that were rotten without replacing them. The painting crew then came in and painted the broken boards. When I discussed this with George, he said he would replace the broken/rotted wood and repaint for free when the crew came to do some roof work I was planning. It's taken me 3 weeks to get an estimate for that work and when I asked for specifics about what it covered (he just emailed a number), I have gotten no response for 2 weeks. The paint job looks great and I was going to use Gikas again despite the issues, but there are obvious issues with communication within his team.
Response from Gikas Painting, Roofing and Restoration

"I sent our roofer to check and put together a quote for relining the yankee gutter around the porch. . I sent the quote on 9/19. I am still committed to replace those extra boards that carpenter found to be rotten on the porch floor free of charge.Just let me know when is good to do that."

Gikas did a great job painting my home. I got a few estimates and although Gikas was not the least expensive I felt most comfortable using them because of their track record around town. I also felt very comfortable working with George who was my first point of contact to get an estimate and the foreman for  the entire job.
They provided at no extra charge a color consultant who was very helpful with choosing colors that worked with our home. The paint crew was fantastic and everything they did met all of my expectations. If I thought something needed to be addressed all I had to do was email George and in short order it was taken care of. They even went above and beyond to replace or repair something that wasn't discussed in the original price.
It was also nice having George and Gikas visit during the course of the job to see how things were going. They were great at making recommendations on things I didn't think about or things I was unsure of. For instance, I was going to replace my original garage door with a steel door from Home Depot. Thankfully, George recommended keeping the original door and having them repair it. There is a downside with the original door not having insulation but I didn't care because I prefer keeping the original look and it saved me in up front money. One of their carpenters repaired  (at a reasonable cost) the garage door which had wood damage from weather. They also replaced weather damaged garage door jambs, and installed a new entry door that I had previously purchased. They are great with cleaning up the mess as they go and taking away any debris related to the job.
All in all a great job! I would definitely use them again and I already am on my next project. They started today!
Thank you, Gikas!

George's guys did a great job.  They were fast and professional.  I had a concern about the paint matching that was done, but George came out and rectified it.  Didn't ask for a dime until we were happy with the work.  I have already recommended them.

In preparing to sell my house, a lot of work had to be done, so believe me, I educated myself. I combed both Angie's list and Home Advisor looking for a contractor as well as individual electricians, painters, plasterers, etc. I interviewed several contractors and and got quite a few estimates. George of Gikas was exceptional in every way and in every realm of work. He wins hands down. His prices are excellent, he's reachable, quick to respond by text, and the work is excellent. Just to give you one concrete example--I had knob and tube wiring that had to be replaced. The best price I'd got was $15K (the highest was $4000 higher than that!) George said he thought he could find a licensed electrician who would offer an even better price, and he did for nearly a third less. Another example? My schedule for getting my house on the market speeded up and I let George know. For one task, I spoke to him at 8 AM and the workers were working in my house by mid day. In short, he's great!

The work was completed in less than a week. Even though the work was done during one of the hottest weeks of the summer, the sanding was done under a tarp to contain the dust. When the foreman was concerned that one final coat over the primer might not give sufficient coverage over the years, they added a second coat with no extra charge. Unneeded hardware on trim like old storm window brackets were removed. Current hardware on trim like window box supports, were removed and replaced. Cleanup was thorough each day and when work was completed.
The cost was somewhat more than other estimates, but one of the Gikas owners who did the estimate, pointed out needed work that other estimators missed (e.g., feather sanding of shingles and replacing of damaged drip caps over windows). We are very satisfied with the result and have had complements from our neighbors.

Gikas' key person George came to our house and went over what we needed, meeting with us in the evening at our convenience - at this point we're quite familiar with his easy going but professional style.  We showed him what we wanted to do - improve the appearance of deck, install a new railing to match in quality the one they installed at our last home, replace/paint window and door trim, and paint our front door and the panel next to it.  Together we agreed on what could be kept and what needed to be replaced, helping us keep down the cost while getting what we wanted.
There were 2 resources dedicated to the job (and no changes in workers during it).  The more senior of the two presented with me with options for our railing, and, based on my feedback, came up with a design that involved beveling the top and bottom sides - we wanted a particularly wide one for folks to be able to sit on, as the deck isn't too large, so no pre-cut railings were available.  They carefully handled the removal of our furniture and umbrella from the deck, cleaned up entirely at the end of every day, performed all of the work as promised, and were professional in all respects.  On top of that they were cordial - the cordiality, professionalism and design sensibility keep us going back to Gikas.
We will definitely use them in the future, and recommend them highly - as noted, this was the most recent of several jobs, certain of which were much bigger (painting interior of this house, exterior of our old one and railing design and construction).
