When the exterior painting job and the additional items were completed and my wife and I inspected we were disappointed with the finish. As the house had been covered with about 3 coats of paint before being sanded down to the bare wood we were unprepared that it wouldn't look so smooth, and the grain of the wood would be visible in both the siding and trim. In addition, there were numerous circular marks on the siding from the paint shavers. George Mihalis the owner, wanted us to be happy with the work performed and asked us to make a punch list of anything else we weren't happy with when we inspected. The foreman then returned and filled all the circular marks and the grainy areas on the siding and trim with filler, sanded the surfaces until they were smooth and applied another coat of paint. It was a big job and he had to come numerous times. He also completed all the items on our punch list. George then had us inspect everything again until he had our assurance that we were happy with the work completed. For that reason I've rated Gikas with an A for responsiveness.
Not long after everything was completed the sunporch roof and gutter and the gutters and leaders at the back of the house suffered damage from falling tree branches during Super Storm Sandy. Gikas was quick to respond to make temporary repairs to the sunporch roof and siding, and to give me an estimate for fixing the damage and replacing the gutters and leaders that I could submit to my insurance company. They also honored the warranty from the original paint job and returned this September to fix a few areas where the paint had bubbled.
I would hire Gikas again for future works.
"We were to paint the small room upstairs that costumer said it had tested for lead and it came back positive and a small part of hallway downstairs that had new sheetrock and therefore no lead. There was a very small area(aproximately 1-2 square feet) at the corner of the room ceiling that the worker found some paint falling apart. We had covered the entire room including any furniture with plastic tarps, we had the Hepa vaccuum. We know we werent even suppossed to follow any regulations of EPA since we were to only paint(encapsulate) that room without disturbing the paint. The ceiling was aproximately 80 square feet. There was absolutely no sanding done on the walls or trims. The worker found the paint failing in that area which is definitely several times smaller than 6 square feet which is the number where EPA regulations are trigered and he used the hose of the Hepa vaccuums to collect any dust or chips that resulted from disturbing that small area. Should l had not addressed that area the paint would be falling apart anyway exposing costumer's family to further problems;it wasnt only about appearance. I was actually there in less than an hour if costumer remembers. I have a full documentation including pictures that shows we had covered everything. We cleaned and vaccuumed thoroughly after the work was done. We take the lead issue seriously ; we are certified by EPA and the workers are trained to follow all protocols. In this case we had taken all precautious meassures (covering,Hepa vaccuums etc) even if such a process wasnt warranted by the squarage of area that we ended up disturbing. [member name removed]; Why should l get C for the price? I think that $600 was a very good price to paint one room and one hallway. It was a neighbor's price. Why should l get F for the quality? We have professional painters that have painted so many houses.I dont pick them from the corner at Home Depot. After all think about the relativity of the quality when you want me to paint a room without preparation/sanding. Why should l get F for responsiveness as l was there myself within an hour after you placed the complaint call.I live only 100 yards away from you(right around the corner) so how can l be not responsive? Any way;i am here if you need me for any other projects or just for advise for any home improvement that you want to make.Just feel free to ask me.At least we can still be good neighbors."
"I sent our roofer to check and put together a quote for relining the yankee gutter around the porch. . I sent the quote on 9/19. I am still committed to replace those extra boards that carpenter found to be rotten on the porch floor free of charge.Just let me know when is good to do that."
They provided at no extra charge a color consultant who was very helpful with choosing colors that worked with our home. The paint crew was fantastic and everything they did met all of my expectations. If I thought something needed to be addressed all I had to do was email George and in short order it was taken care of. They even went above and beyond to replace or repair something that wasn't discussed in the original price.
It was also nice having George and Gikas visit during the course of the job to see how things were going. They were great at making recommendations on things I didn't think about or things I was unsure of. For instance, I was going to replace my original garage door with a steel door from Home Depot. Thankfully, George recommended keeping the original door and having them repair it. There is a downside with the original door not having insulation but I didn't care because I prefer keeping the original look and it saved me in up front money. One of their carpenters repaired (at a reasonable cost) the garage door which had wood damage from weather. They also replaced weather damaged garage door jambs, and installed a new entry door that I had previously purchased. They are great with cleaning up the mess as they go and taking away any debris related to the job.
All in all a great job! I would definitely use them again and I already am on my next project. They started today!
Thank you, Gikas!
The cost was somewhat more than other estimates, but one of the Gikas owners who did the estimate, pointed out needed work that other estimators missed (e.g., feather sanding of shingles and replacing of damaged drip caps over windows). We are very satisfied with the result and have had complements from our neighbors.
There were 2 resources dedicated to the job (and no changes in workers during it). The more senior of the two presented with me with options for our railing, and, based on my feedback, came up with a design that involved beveling the top and bottom sides - we wanted a particularly wide one for folks to be able to sit on, as the deck isn't too large, so no pre-cut railings were available. They carefully handled the removal of our furniture and umbrella from the deck, cleaned up entirely at the end of every day, performed all of the work as promised, and were professional in all respects. On top of that they were cordial - the cordiality, professionalism and design sensibility keep us going back to Gikas.
We will definitely use them in the future, and recommend them highly - as noted, this was the most recent of several jobs, certain of which were much bigger (painting interior of this house, exterior of our old one and railing design and construction).
