1. I was lead to believe that the contractor was going to take care of all the permitting and paperwork. He had done work in my development before which was one reason I selected them. However one the day that the work was being done I was visited by my Association who informed me that the permits for the work had not been issued. Everything was resolved without my incurring an fines, but this is one of the reasons that I did not give them an A.
2. The two gentlemen that came to do the actual work spoke virtually no english, which made communications difficult.
3. They did not clean up as well as I might have expected. There were lots of bits of debris on the furniture and floor in my living room. Had they simply did a quick sweep of the area it would have made me a lot happier. A bigger problem is that one of the workers left a very visible foot print on the white frame inside up by the skylight. While I was able to get things swept up myself (not easily since I am handicapped) I cannot wash down that footprint, and it bothers me every time I look up.
On the other hand, the new skylights are perfectly seated and have already been tested by some pretty substantial rains and there have been no leaks.
"Thank you for your business, and for leaving a review on Angie’s List. We take all of our ratings and reviews very seriously, they help us maintain our high quality standards. I’d like to address a few of the issues you raised. The first is regarding permitting, the job that we performed did not require a permit from your township, and therefore one was not obtained. The approval required by your home owners association is another matter. Virtually all of the residents in your community we have done work for have received this approval and are aware of the requirements of their homeowners association. In your community alone there are 10 different associations, it just isn’t feasible for us to know the requirements of each association. We did however provide to your association everything they required for your approval that same day via fax. I would like to apologize that you felt it was difficult to communicate with our staff. Several of our staff members are multilingual, speaking Polish, Russian and Spanish. They usually have no problem discussing any issues with our customers. Finally regarding the cleanup. If you have any problems with our services we hope that you will contact us immediately so we can correct them. As for the mark on the skylight I do hope that you will call us, we’ll be happy to come back and clean it for you. We have a reputation over the last 28 years of providing the highest level of customer service, and we are ready to do what it takes for your satisfaction. Sincerely, Andrew Ferrara CEO A-Top Construction Manalapan, NJ 07726 (732) 446 6341"
sales person very direct, knowledgeable, no gimmicks - very helpful working my insurance company, made phone calls together, told me what to expect during the process, a lot of hand holding. when replacing the roof the workers were very professional and cleaned up after very well
There was a bit of a discussion about replacing the two 4X8 OSB boards in the areas where I had leaks, but I was adamant as I had specified this in the contract, yet there were no replacements brought to the jobsite so someone had to go get them. I further pointed out another board that was at the roof peak and visibly swelled and and a slight bit mishapen, but was told it was fine. I don't know if it was replaced (I doubt it since they were papering that area no long after).
At one point several of the workers had to talk to this man, Robert, about putting the paper on before shingling. That had me worried. But I spoke with the workers and they were very conscientious about doing the job right. The crew was really great and professional in their work.
A man had to come back and hook up the exhaust vents a couple of days later as they did not have the vents with them the day the roof was completed. My biggest issue was the nails from the removal as I have a farm with horses. The owner of A-Top sent another man back to completely go over the areas around the house with a strong magnet to remove any leftover nails. I found only a few nails left trapped between the slats on my deck steps. They were extremely thorough knowing my concern for possible injury to my horses.
I do wish that they didn't have to throw out my gutter covers, I guess I was not aware that they would have to be removed.
Overall, they did a beautiful job, my roof looks fantastic and they left my place immaculate.
"Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Angie’s List and for the kind words. When I started A-Top almost 30 years ago I had 2 guiding principles. The first is to always do the best quality work possible and the second is to not sell anyone anything that they don’t need. I’m happy that you were able to get your ventilation issue resolved, and that the other contractor honored their commitment. If we can be of any assistance in the future please don’t hesitate to call. Sincerely, Andrew Ferrara CEO A-Top Construction Manalapan, NJ 07726 (732) 446 6341"
The day I signed with the other vendor and gave them a down payment I received an email from the salesman at A-top asking if he could come by to deliver the contract. Weird.
"Dear [member name removed], I would like to thank you for leaving a review and apologize to you. I’ve conducted some research to try and get a better grasp of what exactly happened here. I have to agree with your conclusion that this situation was weird, and not the way we generally conduct business. We did drop the ball on this one and we have put additional follow up procedures in place to ensure it doesn’t happen again. We work hard to try and gain your business and to lose it in such a ridiculous manner is not acceptable to us. Although we’re sorry that you went with a competitor we hope you are happy with the outcome of your project. If we can be of any assistance to you in the future please don’t hesitate to call. I assure you that any future experience with us will have a much better outcome. Sincerely, John Doherty Manager, Business Operations A-Top Construction (732) 446-6341"
Contacted A-Top for an estimate. They came in and gave us an estimate for $2,500. We had 2 other estimates for $2.750 and $2,200. A-Top where the first to respond (although we contacted all three same day). We felt comfortable with them doing the job.
They requested a $900 deposit to order the skylight, and asked that the balance be paid the day they come in for the installation. We felt that was fair. We placed the order in July, and we were notified that the skylight came in in October. They came in to install the skylight and everything went smooth. So far, they have earned a 5 Star rating. Whoever, Their back office paperwork needs to be addressed.
1. We asked them to mail the estimate to us, they mailed it to the wrong address. After repeated phone calls, they finally transferred the address on the estimate itself to the mailing label and we go the estimate 3 weeks later.
2. We mailed them the $900 deposit when we placed the order. The check cleared our bank account 60 days later. The check for the balance ($1,600) that we wrote in October, cleared our checking account in January. This tend to mess things up especially when it takes so long for checks to clear.
That being said, They did a good job with the skylight, and we will consider hiring them again in the future.
The section where the rotted wood was removed was replaced with an identical piece. This involved a piece of decorative plywood as part of an overhang, and the wood has horizontal slats facing down as part of the design. After installation, the replacement wood had identical slats that lined up perfectly with the original. All I need to do is paint it next spring and it will be perfect!
The section where the roof meets the siding is where the original wood rotted and water was collecting. After the wood was replaced, the workers placed a rubber bladder and replacement flashing to protect the underlying roof. Replacement shingles were an exact match even though they were replacing 10 year old shingles. The slope of the roof is now done in such a way that water will not collect against the house.
While the workers were engaged in the effort they noticed that there was also the need to replace a corner piece of siding that was cracked - I had known about this but never pursued it as I had tried to find the siding through internet research in the past. I thought it would be a challenge even to go near this, but they were able to provide a perfect color and great texture match "on the fly" during the job.
Some sheet metal flashing also needed to be replaced and the color matchiing was a bit more challenging, but they did a great job and I am more than happy that the main concern - water compromising the bones of the house - was alleviated.
The proof - as they say - is in the eating. The first time there was a significant rain after the work was completed, I noticed that the musty smell was gone when standing under the overhang. Problem solved.
The men arrived on the scheduled date at 8:00 a.m. and worked until about 8:30 that night. At that point the job was almost finished and only required a few hours a day later to finish up some trim work. Everything was done exactly as specified in the contract for the price originally agreed upon. All construction material was removed. I would use A-Top construction again and would highly recommend them.
