We needed a new HVAC system installed. Cleworth had a good deal on Ameristar with a no interest payment plan, for under $5,000. The sales process should've been the first indication of trouble to come. We asked for an estimate and the salesman came with no information/literature. He gave us the price on the Ameristar Unit. We asked him if he could provide us with a written
estimate. He said he'd leave it for us the next day. That didn't happen. We got the estimate via email after I emailed him inquiring why it wasn't left for us. The estimate was vague and it was like pulling teeth to get solid answers on
what would be covered for the price. Finally, after much back and forth, we felt like we had our questions answered. The price was so good we decided to move forward.
The installation took place on a Friday and it seemed to go smoothly. The installation staff was friendly and quick. After they left, I noticed a really awful metallic/grinding noise when the heat came on. The installer was very good and came back on Saturday morning. He figured out we had a faulty part in the furnace that had to be ordered. On Sunday, I kept smelling gas near the
furnace. After debating what to do, I called PSE&G and, sure enough, the installers left us with a gas leak. Not cool at all. The installer picked up the faulty part on Monday and installed it promptly. We informed him about the gas leak. He was apologetic.
The HVAC system was installed at the end of January 2015 and we were just able to get it inspected by our township in mid-May. That's over 3 months! The worst part of the process (as if all of the other issues weren't bad enough) was submitting the township permit and paying for the permit. We had to show up, in-person, several times before the permit got filed (and call the township a couple of times to see if it had been filed yet- each time, it hadn?t). This took about 1 month to achieve. The permits were finally filed with the township, and we expected to wait the designated 20 days for them to process it. The township said that Cleworth was the contact on the permit application and that they?d get a call when it was done. A month and a half later, we haven?t heard from cleworth, so we called the township and they said they had contacted them weeks ago saying it was ready to be picked up. Cleworth never called us to let us know. Getting them to pick it up was a whole
other battle.
When we asked at the beginning of this process, we were told the permit would be paid for by Cleworth. We asked after we got the estimate, after we signed the contract, and during the long period in which we were waiting for the permits to get filed. Each time (though there was some confusion with the office staff at one point) we were reassured that the permits would be paid for by Cleworth. (Note: if they had said at the beginning that the permits were not included, that would have been fine with us. But they NEVER told us that we would be responsible. Each time we asked, they said they would be covered.) Finally, after 3 months, we were told we were responsible for the permit costs and picking it up from the township. After complaining in writing and sending emails we had from the beginning (proving that they told us the indicated permit would be covered by Cleworth), they finally paid and picked up the permit, and we were able to schedule the inspection.
Even at inspection, the AC unit was inadequately wired. We should have failed for this but luckily I was able to fix this myself while the inspector was still there and pass inspection.
Overall, horrendous customer service. The installers were nice, on time, quick? but they left a gas leak. I can't get over that. Stay away from Cleworth Conditioning.
