After seeing the good reviews here I called the company and was told I would get a call back to set up an estimate.  After about five days with no call back, I called again and was told again that I would get a call back to set up an estimate, making sure they had my correct phone number.  It has been about a month with no call back.  It seems very unprofessional for such a highly-rated business.

I found Gargas on Angie's List and chose them due to their rating, competitive price, and the feeling I got speaking with Mark, the president of the company. It was a pleasure dealing with Mark who is nice, understanding and very professional. He was usually available within a day or so of calling the office. When the crew arrived, they worked quickly and effieciently. The job supervisor, however, didn't want to listen to my concerns and resisted in allievating the issue. While stripping the old shingles down, they inadvertently pulled of on of the cedar shakes on the dormer leaving a hole where water could enter the house. I requested that he repair it and he refused saying that the "caulking" pulled of the shake when the shingles came off and there was nothing he could do. After discussing the issue with him for 5 minutes, I realized that he wasn't going to budge. At the end of the day when they had almost finished, Mark arrived to inspect the job. I showed him the issue and he agreed with me and the supervisor "fixed" the hole with a piece of aluminum he cut to fit the space, then secured it with nails and caulked around it. I also noticed that on the ridge of the roof, they had left the end shingle hanging over further than all of the other edge shingles and asked then to trim it to be the same length, the supervisor ignored my requested at first but then went up and trimmed it himself. Also while stripping the shingles, they threw the old shingles down on the ground which ended up flattening some flowers we had in a flower box. The supervisor said I had to speak with Mark. Mark told me to take $50 off of the price to replace the flowers, fair enough. After they cleaned up the nails, I found literally hundreds more and with two little kids running around, that can't happen. I just cleaned those up on my own. Upon completion, I paid them in full minus the $50 for the flowers. A couple days later, something about the roof bothered me and I couldn't pinpoint what it was. Then it dawned on me, the overhang was too long (the amount the shingle hangs over the edge so water doesn't get under the roof. Why is this bad? It voids the shingle manufacture's wind warranty since too much over hang lets wind catch it and can rip it up more easily. Mark insisted this is the way they have been installing the shingles for years and they were an approved installer for ELK-GAF shingles, and that it was OK because I have a warranty with Gargas (for labor, not cost of shingles). Well, to make a long story shorter, I called GAF and explained my issue. They indicated that it this wasn't fixed, the warranty for wind would be voided. I had Mark over to inspect the job, and we both called GAF and he was informed that a 1 1/2" over hang is too much that it shold be 1/4" to 3/8". Mark agreed to trim the excess and did. The trim job leaves something to be desired but at lease I have a warranty for the shingles too. One final thing, I had asked the office for a receipt for the job and all they sent was one for the house not the garage. I called them twice after that and they said they would send one out both times, I'm still waiting 4 months later. Mark was a great representative for his company, attentive, understanding, supportive, and eager to help where he could, overall. The supervisor, I do know his name but don't want to name him here, left me with the impression that he hated his job and didn't really want to A. hear anything from customers and B. have to do any "extra" work, even if it was their fault. Gargas rectified most of the issues and for that I am grateful but they should have never been issues in the first place. I would use them again, BUT ONLY if a different supervisor performed the job!

Gargas provided the lowest estimate. They were flexible with the material list, and used the particular ridge vent that I requested at no additional cost. Prior to the installation, I called twice to inquire about the additional cost of copper flashing. For some reason, they never responded and I had to call while the workers were at my house. By this time it was too late. They arrived on time and efficiently finished the roof job in one day, as was planned. When I returned home from work I discovered that they screwed 4 X 16 inch vents to the soffits as was discussed, but only cut three 1.5 inch holes per vent with a hole saw. This is much less intake than is required by the manufacturer specs on the ridge vent and much less than is recommended by the roofing community. I did a lot of research on this and was glad I did. You are supposed to have 60% of your attic ventilation coming in the sofffit and 40% going out the ridge to create a vacuum effect. I also noticed that one of the ridge vent panels was installed off center. I asked Mark to come and look at my issues and he promptly did so. To his credit, they returned the next day to address all of my concerns. I got the feeling that Mark did not agree with my assessment that more intake ventilation was needed. This concerns me a little, and I would do my homework before asking Gargas to balance the ventilation in my attic space. Regardless, Mark did everything needed to satisfy our concerns - he was very professional (even if the crew was a little sloppy) and made sure we were happy at the end of the day.

I CANCELLED THE CONTRACT PRIOR TO THE JOB DUE TO LACK OF COMMUNICATION BY GARGAS TO PROVIDE ME WITH A DATE FOR THE NEW ROOF AFTER NOT HEARING BACK FROM GARGAS AFTER 2 WEEKS.
Response from Gargas Roofing and Construction Inc

"Response from Gargas Roofing Inc We regret that the member was not satisfied with our office service. We strive to provide excellent service and highly value our customers. We also believe that we communicated with the member and answered her questions diligently. When Mark provided an estimate to the member, he explained that it takes between 2-3 weeks for the roof installation. Our company received signed proposal on June 24, 2010. After we received proposal Mark spoke to the member on the phone and answered additional questions she had. Member's husband called again during the week of July 5 to ask about process of obtaining the permit for roof installation. Office secretary explained that permit will be taking by our company and that it takes 1-2 days for Twp of Wayne to issue this type of permit. We explain to our customers that due to the nature of our business we are unable to provide exact future day for roof installation. Our work schedule heavily depends on the weather. Therefore we tell our customers that we will call them 1-2 days before we plan to install their roof or tell them to feel free to call at anytime to find out the approximate date. Since June 24th, we had small delays because of 4th of July holiday weekend, followed by extremely high temperatures (over 100 degrees) and period of heavy rains that halted our work for couple of days. Even with these disruptions we intended to do the roof installation for the member the week of July 12, which would be the 3rd week after she signed the proposals. Unfortunately, we are unable to make statement in regards to the final phone conversation between the member as our secretary Kathy was the only person in the office at that time. As the result of this conflict Kathy is no longer working for our company. Sincerely Mark Gargas"

Mark Gargas and his men were very professional and helpful from start to finish. Mark provided all necessary information such as his insurance and many references in a booklet at our first meeting. Compared to the other estimates I received the price was reasonable. I have a steep roof with several dormers and they completed the job in two days. The men were pleasant and helpful and were careful about using tarps to cover everything. When the job was finished they went all around the property to make sure that it was completely free of debris. I have recommended Gargas Roofing to all of my friends.

Once date for roof replacement was finalized, workers arrived early in day, as promised, worked through late afternoon; cleaned-up thoroughly; owner personally inspected work same day including picking up any remaining material fragments, and drove the truck that picked up the dumpsterr. While I hope never to have to use their services again, for this house, I would not hesitate to do so.

Mark and company was very good from start to finish. His estimate was done promptly and in detail. He was easily reachable by phone and returns calls if you leave him a message; very kind and honest in person as well. He honored the angieslist discount coupon upon payment. I was very pleased overall with Gargas Roofing and would definitely hire them again in the future if need be. Highly recommended!

Mark the owner answered the call on Sunday following a high wind and rain storm, where there was a great deal of damage to many houses. upon hearing that we had a leak in the attic , he said he would be there at 8:AM on Monday morning. He arrived on time gave an efficient and quick estimate and sent his skilled office supervisor over with the correct matching shingles 2 hours later. He did his job and then checked the rest of the roof , hammering down nails on many other sections of the roof. Very efficient. Very professional.

After pushing a 15 year old roof as far as it could go, I called a number of roofers for quotes on a complete tear-off and replacement. I called Gargas and they had someone out to do an estimate based on my availability. They gave me a detailed quote which was about in the middle of the other quotes I had received. However, with the Angie's list coupon it came in less. They scheduled me for about 2 weeks out based on their work schedule and the weather. We had to reschedule a couple of times due to weather. On the day they came it was cloudy and looked like rain, but they said they would be able to do it in a few hours and should be done before the rain came. They completely draped the house in tarps and began taking off the old shingles quickly and efficiently. Overall, they were done in about 4-5 hours and I had a brand new roof. So far, the roof has been fine and while I had multiple leaks previously, I do not have any, anymore. They also replaced a few pieces of the wood decking underneath which were badly damaged by previous leaking. They also allow you to pay by credit card (which I wanted to do for miles), however, they don't tell you upfront that they charge you the fee by the credit card companies to do so. While I understand this, I would have appreciated this candor upfront, as it appeared to me that I would not have been charged for it when I asked what type of payments they accepted. They also came out to answer a few questions I had on the final job after the fact. Overall I am satisfied with the job. Just hoping it lasts 25 years+ as they claim it will. They do guarantee labor for 10-15 years I believe, so that at least covers me somewhat. The shingles were rated for 25 years.

They were fine. There was a small repair on the roof. The flashing was missing. While they repaired that, they cleaned my gutters. That was nice. The work was simple and they did it quickly. The people did not know what they were supposed to do when they got here. They were close to leaving when I came. Once I got here, everything was fine. They did not come when they were supposed to come. It was better because they came when I was here. I was lucky to be here.

Mark Gargas was very flexible in planning the project. He changed his original thinking about the type of roofing nails to use and the placement of the SmartVents when presented with facts and figures. Another contractor stated that it was New Jersey State law that a roofing project must be accompanied by installation of new gutters. Mark was comfortable with leaving the old functional gutters in place. The estimate was the lowest of 6. This was the only company that provided proof of insurance for general liability and workers' compensation. A crew of 3 roofers and 2 assistants worked from 8:30 to 4:00 and finished the same day. Landscaping was protected by tarps. Good cleanup with a magnetic sweep for loose nails. A dump truck, not a dumpster, was used for the debris. A common practice in the North East is for contractors to keep unused shingles which had been paid for by the homeowner. 3 bundles were requested and kept for future repairs. A portion of a corner gutter was damaged by the shingle transporter. The gutter was repaired the following morning. A shingle remained buckled and would not lie flat with the summer heat. The shingle was repaired last week after an email to Kathy, who is the office secretary.

I was very satissfied with the service. I was a little hesitant because their price was substantially less than the other quotes I received. I waited to submit this rating until I was totally sure the job was properly done. And I am. I was completely satisfied with the service and product Gargas provided. I particularly liked that they provided a list of customers and the type of roof they provided. I was able to drive around to see their work.
