Based on his Angie's list reviews, I called John Asch and asked him to submit a quote for my new roof. In May his quote was accepted and we were told that it would be about 3 weeks before he could perform the work as he needed time to get town permits, schedule crews, and order the necessary supplies. We agreed that the roof would be installed on June 22 - give or take. In July I called John Asch to find out where my roof was and he told me about some problems he was having with overcomitted crews and backlogs due to the very hot weather and rain. I requested a Saturday for the installation so I wouldn't have to take a day off from work, but was told that his crew wasn't working many weekends and he couldn't promise it. Okay, I'm a reasonable guy....stuff happens? I told him that my roof could wait another week or 2 while he worked through his backlog. Now it's the middle of August and I still don't have my new roof so I drop them an email. I was told by his office that they would be coming this week to do my work but no exact date yet, "He'll call on Sunday to let you know." Guess what, Sunday comes and goes without a peep..... Now here's the kicker: My neighbor spoke to a contractor last Tuesday and had his roof installed Saturday! Yes, a Saturday, with a 4 day wait and the same pricing I received from John Asch. His work was done neatly and, to the untrained eye, very competently. Don't I feel like a horse's a**? My wife, who never gets invloved with this kind of stuff, and barely knows what a roof is, told me she didn't want to use John Asch anymore so I'm calling my neighbor's roofers...... Thanks for nothing John Asch!

Was very fortunate that I received an estimate shortly after calling. We were past the estimated work date, so I called and very shortly received a response with a new date. Can't say enough about the 6 -7 man crew who worked in 95 degree weather for 2 and a half days. These young men worked continuously and left the entire area clean. They were great representatives of the type of worker John hires. We did have a snafu with the town requiring a higher priced shingle which bumped up the price, but John split the cost with us. There was also an issue with the dumpster (I have pavers) but again John resolved this to our and hopefully his satisfaction. I was concerned re: the skylight replacement because the brand John gurarantees was smaller than the existing skylight. He had one of his "skylight specialists" come in for that portion of the work and it looks great on the inside - I don't think I am going to need the interior work that I was expecting. Unfortunately we haven't had any rain, so I don't know if anything leaks, but am optimistic that it won't. Would definitely recommend the company.

Called John Asch Contracting, Inc for an estimate to repair my porch roof which was leaking. Initial contact was positive. He came out, explained what needed to be done, gave me a clear cut estimate, and said to call with questions, etc. This was around the second week of April 2010. After reviewing the paperwork, I called back and left a message that I would like to hire the company, and sign a contract. I received a call back from someone different who thought I needed an estimate. I explained I have already had the estimate, am ready to hire the company to complete the work. This person came to my house the next to give me an estimate! I explained again that I already had an estimate would like to sign a contract, which of course he did not have. The original person, John, called me and apologized, stating there was a misunderstanding with his salesperson. I told him not a problem, set up a date and time to meet to sign the contract. Signed contract on April 26,2010, work to begin approximately on May 21, 2010, work would take less then one day. May 21 arrived, no one showed up. I called the company, left a message on May 21. Received a call back on May 25, they left a message that they would be at my home at the end of the week or early the next week. Well now it is June 14, needless to say no one has showed up or called. I am employed as a home care IV nurse, I understand about things not going as anticipated, taking more time, traffic, or difficulty reaching clients. I also understand it is the busiest time of year for contractors. But it does not excuse a company for not at least calling to reschedule or even just touch base. I am very disappointed, as the company came highly rated, and I thought I could get my leaking roof repaired so I could move on with other projects.

I was not impressed with him. He did not inspect the roof and only provided general ideas without any specifics. He seemd hurried and lacked interest in the job.

I sought out John Asch Roofing because of their good reviews here on Angie's List. I met with their sales representative/estimator on Apr 3rd. He agreed to provide me a quotation by mail by the end of the following week (Apr 9th). After not receiving a quote, I called their representative the following Monday, Apr 12th. He told me he had mailed it and was surprised that I had not received it. I questioned what address it had been sent to (remembering that he had initially miswritten my home address for his visit on Apr 3rd) and he was not sure. I provided him with my FAX number and he told me that he would have it sent that evening (Apr 12) or the next morning (Apr13th). By the end of Apr 13th after not receiving a FAX, I again called their representative. He explained that he had not got back to the office to send it, but would do so that evening. That evening, I e-mailed Mr. Asch the owner of the company to explain what had happened so he was aware how his company was being represented and to see if he could assist in resolving the matter. He wrote a sincere note explaining how his company was successful, did good quality work and was growing at a rapid rate (more work opportunities coming in than they can efficiently service), and was sorry that I could not use his service and he wished me luck. I immediately e-mailed him back to clarify that I was just interested in making him aware of my dissatisfaction with how he was being represented but would still welcome a quote ASAP. I have not heard back nor did I ever receive a quote. They may indeed be a fabulous roofer, but they did not provide me a quote as promised. I was reasonable and proactive customer, in that I followed up twice with the sales representative (phone) and twice with the owner (e-mail). All of the other roofing companies I met with seeking quotations, showed up on time, provided timely, detailed estimates and follow-up. It is my impression that John Asch Roofing are trying to manage as best they can through a growth mode (which may reflect the good quality of their work?) but are unreliable in providing a quotation. This is something to consider when deciding to ask them to bid or execute a job.

"John Asch Contracting Receives approximately 20 to 30 calls every day. After the 70 MPH storm we had in March that changed to approx. 80 to 100 calls per day. We are not able to handle that many calls nor do I want to. When that many calls come in we do the best we can working 16 hour days. Some times we miss some people or a few leads fall between the cracks. If we can't get you a price in time, get over it & just call some one else. We do the best work of any roofers out there with the clients we sign contracts with. I never said I can take on all the roofing jobs in NJ. JOHN ASCH......."

Pretty straight forward job and relatively cheap compared to other estimate I got. The 2 man worker crew was pretty thorough and appeared to spend some extra time making sure they covered all the problem areas so I fell pretty confident that the problem is solved. They seemed knowledgable and pointed out some other areas on the siding that I need to keep my eye on and I appreciated that. My only concern was that all they did was tar and caulk the area around the old metal flashing instead of removing shingles, wrapping with waterproof fiber and upgrading the flashing like the other company who i got an estimate from said needed to be done, but I guess you get what you pay for and who know's who was really right. It's only been a couple of weeks since the repair and only rained lightly once so I can't really speak to the long-term quality, but the leak appears to be fixed for now. I would use them again if the repair stands up over time.

It was a very bad experience and if I were the owner of that company, I would take serious issue with anyone who worked for me and gave customers that treatment.

"I go out on approximately 6 estimates daily. As always I made an exact appointment. I even called ahead about 15 minutes before I got there to confirm. I arrived right on time. I was greeted at the door & was told to wait there. After about 10 minutes of waiting, with no one showing up, I left. I wasted about 90 minutes of my time going to there house. 95 % of my clients are great. Every once in a while you get a turkey."

The best experiance with a contractor I've ever had. On time, did what was expected, no problems. Very professional service. It's a shame thier work is limited to only roof work. I wish I could use them for everything else I need done around the house.

Very well. The company returned phone calls and showed up for estimates when they said they would. The day of actual work was very close to the estimated date and the team showed up on that day on time to do the work. The new roof looks nice and the workmanship seems to be excellent. We had one small glitch that the owner expeditiously addressed, so we were very happy about the "customer service" component of this project. The owner also connected us with another home repair company who we had a very positive experience with.

Our home was built in 1897 ad most repairs are complicated and are filled with problems. We located three (3) contractors through Angieโ€™s and two (2) from friends. We received estimates from all five (5). John Asch was the lowest bid and we had excellent reports from otherโ€™s who he had done work for. Mr. Asch was professional and on time for all appointments. More importantly, he was on time for the start of the job and the completion of the job. Mr. Aschโ€™s estimate was well written and well explained โ€“ it also covered any contingencies. There were some problems on the job, that were not expected, but Mr. Asch explained them clearly and what our options were. We were very happy with the quality of the work and the value we received.

John came out and gave me an estimate to seal the area where the chimney met the roof. This cost $450 and they used a material covered with tar. Before they did this, we had water coming in around the flashing which was never done correctly. I had other estimates in the thousands where they wanted to rip up the surrounding roof (only 10 years old). Since having this done, we have had plenty of rainstorms, but no more leaks. We were finally able to finish our attic. Also it looks better than before. The worker also put a new roof on a small shed where we supplied the material. Labor cost was $200 and was a very professional job. This company saved me money and did a great job. Overall it took 1/2 a day.

The owner has been responsive, but I think the job could have been better. When they pulled up the old roof, they damaged the siding and they did not repair it.
Response from JOHN ASCH CONTRACTING INC. / ASCHROOFING.COM

"On approx. Feb. 2009, My company did a roof for this member, located in Franklin Park, NJ. The contract called for removing two layers of roofing. The old roofing had latex caulking adhered to the edge of the roof & the siding above the roof. We put back one layer of roofing & never use caulk on top of a new roof. Manufacturer of roofing materials does not call for caulk along siding, ever. Upon completion of the job, our one layer of new roofing is lower then the previous two layers & caulk. So now for the first time in many years the bottom edge of the siding is exposed. It is no longer hidden behind the old roof & caulk. This siding is the brittle type. 2 foot wide pieces similar to asbestos siding. It has many small bits missing & cracked. Where the siding is missing or irregular you now can see the aluminum step flashing for the first time. The home owner is upset that it shows. He wants it not to show. I said to him no problem. He would have to hire my company or another company to remove the siding, buy new product, cut & install it lower to sit fully right down to the roof. Then paint it all to match. Or he can also do it himself. He doesn't like that idea. He says it is my problem & wants it fixed for free.( I am enclosing a copy of the contract & photos.) I was never hired to do siding work. Nor does it come up in the contract job description. In the 55 years we have been doing roofing, this is the first time a homeowner asked for free siding repairs after doing a roof. I invite any person to look closely at our roof job. It is perfect as always. Nothing is missing. It does not leak. JOHN.........."

Mr. Asch responded promptly after I left a voice mail. He kept me informed of what to expect from the repair and kept me up to date of any updates from the crew that did the work. The work done looks just great. Also, they cleaned gutters during visit for additional fee. Overall very pleased with the work that was performed. Would recommend to any and all.

Mr. Asch returned 1 phone call. We set up for him to look at our roof and give us an estimate. On the scheduled date, he called, saying he had a flat tire, but would get back to us the next day. He did not. We tried twice in the next 2 days to contact him, leaving messages each time. Mr.Asch never called us back.
Response from JOHN ASCH CONTRACTING INC. / ASCHROOFING.COM

"I am amazed that a home owner would take the time to complain about the fact that I got a flat tire, called to say I am sorry and could not make the appointment I guess it would have been better If I just didn't show up with out calling??"

The entire process was painless and everyone we interacted with was professional and courteous, they called back when they said they would, arrived on time, and completed the job on time within the estimate. We have an odd color of gray on our townhouse, after the estimate, they sent a person over with the color swatches for the flashing so we could pick an appropriate color. It was a pleasure dealing with this company and their representatives.

Owner was brusque at first and listed his good qualities and why I should hire him. His sales person, Bernice, explained his behavior. They were able to come earlier than planned. Did excellent work and explained to me what they had done. The workmen are very professional. I would strongly recommend this company and they are experts in dealing with slate roofs.
