George and his sons started Hutchinson Engineering with their accumulated wealth – $35 in a cigar box – in rural Haddonfield, New Jersey. Serving all of South Jersey, Philadelphia, & Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset, & portions of Warren & Westchester Counties.

The cost was very competitive. They also got me set up on NJ Home Energy Performance Program, which provided a meaningful credit ($4000) and 7 year interest free loan.
The installation team was complete professionals. I hope I am not getting the names wrong, but we had a great team (Mike, Mike, Dave, and Dan). The entire project was done in two days. The work was high quality, and I am very happy with the finished project. It is clear that the company has a great culture and actually takes pride in its work (down to the Hutchinson blue plywood).
The insulation crew (I think it was Energy Service Group) was also great. We had old R-13 batts in the attic, which they upgraded with blown in fiberglass to R-44. The house has been much more comfortable. There was no mess, no smell, no dust at all.
I have been renovating a house over the last year and have dealt with many vendors. Hutchinson was a pleasure to deal with, and I would highly recommend the company.

When the tech arrived, he was in the basement about five minutes when he came upstairs and informed me that his examination found a cracked heat exchanger, and this condition was highly dangerous and he advised that we needed a new system immediately, and he had to turn off the electrical switch for safety reasons, and advised that a service salesman would come out that evening to advise us on an appropriate replacement. For his five minutes in the cellar I still had to pay the $84.95.
The tech was very emphatic that we were living with a dangerous condition if we put the heater on, a fire could occur at any time, or there was a real CO issue that could prove deadly. Needless to say I was frightened by what he was telling me. and agreed to immediately have their sales person come out asap.
Their salesman that came out went into a long pitch about the energy star program, that would provide a government subsidy if we signed up for insulation in the attic and a new HVAC system, and advised us of our dangerous living conditions as well. It was clear we were being encouraged to spend thousands of dollars right away.
Did some internet searches on cracked heat exchangers and read about it being a scam.
After talking to other experts we turned our heat on and are taking other estimates for work. The system is 20 yrs old, and we will probably have it replaced anyway, but not by Hutchinson.

Heater Check Up $64.95 Special – This is a 10 point check to make sure the equipment is operating properly. It does not include cleaning of the equipment. Most who have recently upgraded their comfort equipment prefer this option. b. Heater Tune Up $84.95 Special - This has 29 tasks that we perform which include cleaning of the heating components. Our customers with older equipment take this choice not only to make sure everything is checked but cleaned too. 2. When the technician arrives, they are trained on how to perform a proper heating inspection and they follow the same process on all calls. In the training they learn the area’s to look at on different manufactured equipment to make sure the heat exchanger has no leaks. If you have a bad heat exchanger, our policy is to shut down the unit to prevent CO from entering a home. Of course, you the homeowner can turn it back on and assume the risks. 3. We have procedures in place to make sure whenever we are leaving someone without heating or cooling to schedule a Home Comfort Specialist to the property to provide choices on replacing the defective equipment. We offer two types of installations for the customer to choose from. a. NJ Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Program – When New Jersey residents choose this route for upgrading their Home Comfort system, the State provides financial rewards and special financing. Just by meeting the State’s Energy savings and Health and Safety guidelines homeowners can receive: i. Up to a $4000 incentive ii. Up to $10,000, 0% 84 month financing b. Tradition, Non-Home Performance with ENERGY STAR – For these projects, we provide a best, better, good selections with a wide range of Comfort, Indoor Air Quality and Health and Safety product choices. I assure you we do not take our customers' Safety lightly. There are no scams but simply us doing our job finding problems and keeping our customers safe. We know it is expensive to upgrade and there is never a good time to find out that you are in need of replacing the equipment. If you would like to discuss this important matter further don’t hesitate to contact me. I would also like to send out my Service Manager to check the heat exchanger.
