From the time Sam first came to scope the project to the completion of the work, was just over 5 weeks and the total work time was about a day and a half. From my first meeting with Sam, I had a feeling he would do a good job...and he surpassed my expectations. He was punctual to appointments, clear in expectations in terms of what needed to be done and the timing of when he would be there, and the quality of his work speaks volumes. Unbeknownst to me until the end of the job, Sam went to 5 different brickyards to find the best brick match for my home. That's the level of quality he makes sure goes into his work, and it absolutely paid off. His work is not the cheapest - he came in in the upper middle of the 3 estimates I received - but his work warrants the cost. Excellent quality and a great professional. Great recommendation all around - would hire him again in a minute!
Description of Work: As a result of the rough winter and some over salting, the bricks on our front porch we're crumbling. Sam sourced new brick with an unbelievable likeness to the existing 16 year old brick contained throughout the balance of the porch, installed about 20 feet of new brick and waterproofed the full area. He had to put in support beams to support the portico roof as bricks around the columns were crumbling as well. Fantastic workmanship - can barely tell the difference between the new area and old area! Thank you, Sam.

The cement at the top of our chimney had been wearing down over the years and I knew that if we didn't fix it, water would get in and cause issues when it freezes. Working with Sam and his team again was great. This was a much smaller repair project after our larger job the prior year but they were just as fast and professional with quality work in the end. They were there over 2 days and had everything cleaned up and looking fresh when they were done. I will continue to use Sam and his crew and refer them to others based on my experiences thus far.
Description of Work: Installed new cement cove around top of chimney. Cut out all of the bad mortar joints and re-cemented them (I think its called "pointing")

Don't be afraid of the job cost - our entry steps go up about 8 steps to get into the house and the concrete footings are about 5 feet below ground underneath the steps - outside of new construction, footings are not something people ever see much less need to have re-poured - we were the exception and Sam was the lifeline. We underwent a major excavation project that involved destroying our entry steps and footings and old concrete patio area. Sam was referred by a close friend we each had in common and we couldn't be more grateful. He was patient as it took us time to check around (yes, we got four other estimates) and pick out all of the new stone (a few times over). Sam and his team are high quality (with an eye for perfection) true qualified masons. Sam was not the lowest estimate - but when I realized the difference between pretty looking stone decor and true masonry work that looks and works great - we went with him. I've worked with three masons over the past 10 years and will only refer Sam moving forward. When my wife called to say she had the stone colors picked out finally, rather than take down three names on the phone, he insisted on coming over so we could make sure everything was on the same page and review all of the details. His team was here for about 4 weeks (which was pretty fast if you saw the work) and cleaned up regularly each day and at the very end. He did some very tricky work with a 60 year old house foundation and made some really nice recommendations that we really liked. Here are some bonus points: - Smaller jobs - They aren't just about projects this big - I'll post a positive recommendation for a smaller job under $1,000 that he did separately. - Service/Guarantee - Sam has come back a couple of times, one time was just to meet so I could ask more questions on annual maintenance, and advice on anything I needed to do moving forward. The second time, I had a question about a piece of stone and asked him to take a look. I come home to find that that he and his team, re-grouted a section of our steps and adjusted a drain because he didn't think they looked up to par (without me asking). The original stone is fine (but if something happens he call him).
Description of Work: Installed new Rear Steps (paver block) and Front Steps (Stone Veneer and Limestone Treads) which required pouring new concrete footings as we had undergone a major excavation previously that destroyed the old footings. Removed and re-built a new brick wall and two steps at driveway using stone veneer and large block. Installed new paver front walk, side walkway and large rear patio including a fire pit (all requiring new ground leveling/grading)

We knew our master bath needed to be redone when we bought in 2008. When built in 1965 the master bath was just a toilet & sink with a large pantry for linens & towels. At some point that large closet was turned into a stand-up shower. When we purchased the home the master bath had a badly cauked bath-fitter that needed to go as did the dated peach 4x4 tile on the floor and walls. Encouraged by the DIY movement I bit off a bit more than I expected. I did the demolition and it went great without a hitch but what lurked behind the walls was a nightmare. The shower pan was supported incorrectly by 2x4s, the framed wood wasn't the best - now splitting and warped unsquared. Also there were two rows of left over tile underneath the bathfitter so of course not laying flush mold was behind the wall-unit on top of the regular wall-dry-wall. The shower discharge was not only badly connected to the main line but they also sliced 4" out of the joists under the floor to accomodate the pipe! I didn't know who to call to do the job right but the This Old House crew. Our house has great bones and was built well and I most certainly did not want the kind of workmanship that I've seen during the housing bubble coming in, besides, I was trying to fix the shoddy install of the intial bad tile job left behind the shoddy bath-fitter surround I took out. Seeing portions of the shiny wall-paper of the 70's was the only clue when who did what when. We took a year to decide what we wanted (comparing older homes in the neighborhood and past issues of 1965-1975 design magazines) and to complete due dillegence of contractors. We decided on white hex floor tile and 3x6 subway with white grout. With Sam's help we decided on a shelf, a single inset vs. stick-out shelves. After our intial consultation with him and from viewing his past work we were ready to start. We had seen him doing work on other houses at random driving by during commutes or grocery shopping, and noticed a clear attention to detail on outside work and how clean the job sites were before, after, and during. After a few other misses with other interviews during other estimates we called the number on his truck.
Description of Work: Sam created the master shower our home always deserved and it was done correctly, finally, after so many past owners had mucked it up. First, Sam came for an intial estimate. He actively listened to our concerns about tile type dating the era vs being timeless and gave great feedback on our thoughts regarding shelf-type/size in the shower. He touched upon every point we had done in our own due dillegence without us prompting or leading the discussion and also pointed out additional thoughts for us to consider for the project. After all supplies like tile, grout, faucet and the wall shelf unit were in, the project began. Next the demo started, our floors were protected, he took great care of avoiding dings to walls, he treated the entire process as it were his own home. At the end of each day everything was cleaned up so we could go about as normal. We have 3 cats and there was never any concern of them stepping in dust or debris in the evenings. After demo was the prep where Sam corrected the wrongs of past construction: squaring walls, supporting the floor properly so the shower pan didn't bounce, to include reinforcing the floor joists that had been sawed out in the basement to accomodate a pipe patched in badly to the main. He put up a high grade (fiberglass or poly-something?) backer board that has more give to it than the concrete kind which can easily pop your tiles or crack grout lines. The space was impressive and dress-right-dress professional without any tiles even! Finally was the magic step of tiling and grouting. There's not much to say because it went so smoothly. I worked at home some days to answer any questions during the initial phase but mostly he just did his thing and I did mine at the laptop. A few days we left him with the house key while we went to work and came back to only see amazing amounts of progress done. The only tough part to completion was waiting for the grout to cure properly which is like letting a cookie cool after it comes out of the oven. An amazing job.
