It went great! he was very responsive to our questions and respectful of the process of getting multiple bids and trying to be fair as possible. We were impressed with his thorough estimate and recommendations on how to avoid ice damns in the future. We had him repair 4 ceilings and 3 other areas that needed drywall and trim. He does quality work and really took the time to make sure our house clean each time before he left. We plan on using him for some other upcoming projects too. It is nice to find a solid, trustworthy carpenter that actually calls you back these days!

All carpentry work was done very skillfully. The work area was cleaned up every day, at the completion of work. We had some frustration with scheduling communication. Some cracks appeared in the caulked seams, a couple of months later, but he sent someone to repair them. We asked for an estimate for an additional project, but he hasn't gotten back with us.

Contacted Daniel after reading some of the reviews for Focalpoint Renovations on Angie's List. We had already talked to a few contractors before checking out Angie's List that was recommended by a friend. So Glad we did! Daniel made us feel very comfortable in our choice of Focalpoint Renovations. Redoing our kitchen was a huge undertaking and something that we had been contemplating for some time. Through the whole process (which was about 12 weeks) we were able to live in our house while the crew worked around us without much disruption to our busy lives. The work was completed ahead of time and right on budget (although I do believe that there probably should have been some additional fees). Daniel and his crew were on time, on budget and very professional. He is a true master of his craft! I wish there was some way to post pictures of this job; that is the only way to fully appreciate the attention to detail. THANK YOU AGAIN ANGIE'S LIST!!!!! Everything started well, Daniel came early with help, worked all day and the pricing seemed OK. However after a week, there were some issues with the weather, then he didn't show up and gave an excuse that his son was sick for a week. After that, he would show up sporadically and by himself, saying he had to make up other projects also. He would give excuses of the rain even though it didn't rain and the forcast called for a 30% chance of rain in the afternoon. He would then show up for half a day once or twice a week. One week, he did not show and said he was on vacation. After 2 1/2 months, he finally finished the deck after we had to threaten to finish the job ourselves and not pay him for the completion of the job. It was initially supposed to take 2 weeks, and although there has been a lot of rain, he has made no special effort to make the work up. Additionally, we have called him numerous times and he has never answered or responded. He will respond to emails, usually giving excuses. Also, there was no trim included in the estimate, so this was not done. He said he left it off because of the additional cost, though I have yet to see a composite deck without the trim. I decided to give him a second chance and scheduled him to finish the trim. After another couple of weeks, he came by with a contract and said it would only take half a day, and he may even stop by on Sunday to work on it. 4 weeks later, and several more excuses including his staff being sick, and a day he had to take to get his cell phone fixed (supposedly the day he was scheduled to stop by), he still did not show up. Finally, I had to cancel the contract and finish this myself. The work that was done was done well, but taking 4 months to finish a deck (and not even finishing it) that was supposed to take 2 weeks was ridiculous, and I cannot recommend him for any other jobs.
Description of Work: Installed back deck with patio underneath.

Response from Focalpoint Renovations
At Focalpoint Renovations, we strive to give the best quality product in a timely fashion. With regards to (removed member name) project, he had us re-write the initial estimate 4 times incorporating different ways of budgeting the materials until he was presented with a line-by-line estimate that met his approval, something we were more than happy to do for him. (removed member name) asked us to remove all of the demolition aspects from his estimate informing us he would remove and dispose of the existing deck himself to keep his costs as low as possible. The day we started, we were met with a new issue. Hidden behind the siding, the entire lower side of his house that the original deck was attached to was completely rotted away from years of moisture getting behind the flashing of the previous deck. (removed member name) discovered this during his demolition and asked us to address this problem. Upon opening the damaged area, it was also discovered that mold had been growing and carpenter ants had completely infested the interiors of his walls. All of this had to be removed, abated, repaired, re-framed, re-insulated, treated with pesticides and made weather-tight before our contracted work could even start. His project also included a sunken patio underneath the deck which required removing 12" of topsoil to give him the headroom he desired. What we found once we broke ground was that his entire back yard was comprised of ledge stone that had been blasted and left as back-fill. Most of the stones ranged from the size of a football to the size of an office desk. All of this required excavation far above and beyond anything we had specified in our contract. We brought in multiple machines, dug as deep as 6 feet over an area much larger than the deck itself and trucked out over 25 tons of stone from his backyard. We also added drainage swales at no cost in order to give (removed member name) patio much better chances of surviving the heavy roof run-off that had created much of the damage and rot to his home. All of these additional items added time onto the project. We were hindered even more as the weather turned sour and days of rain forced us to make decisions daily if we could even put men and equipment on his project without being rained out. We kept in constant touch with (removed member name) along the way while handling these issues. The untimely hospitalization of my 7 year old son was scary for me personally and set many of our projects back that week as I informed all of our customers of my absence due to medical emergency. I'm surprised that this and the weather seem to be the only memories (removed member name) has of the obstacles we overcame in order to complete his project. (removed member name) also didn't mention that we included removing multiple roof-mounted satellite dishes & wiring, sealing roof perforations, and repairing damaged siding at no cost. Additionally, all of the rotted framing, sheathing, insulation, excavation and stone removal extras were billed exactly at my cost saving (removed member name) what could have been crippling additional expenses, all as a sign of good faith and a desire to keep his project and budget on track. Our contracts are complete in every detail and we review each line carefully with our customers before signing. (removed member name) never requested Azek trim, nor was it included in the itemized contract, on his deck until the project was completed. He requested an additional estimate only after his project was completed and subsequently signed a new work order which he then cancelled via email when we couldn't schedule the additional work in immediately. We apologized for not being able to get his new work order into our schedule in a time frame that worked for him, voided his new work order as he requested and sent him our best regards. We're happy that (removed member name) acknowledges the quality of our work (if not the numerous extras) and we know having work done on a home can be stressful at best. We sincerely apologize for any delays his project was met with regardless of whether we could control them or not.

Daniel is extremely knowledgeable, a gentleman, and a consummate professional... His crew was equally professional, courteous, and did outstanding work. I will not only recommend Focalpoint Renovations to ANYONE who needs work done on their home or business, but I am planning on having additional work done on my home and can't imagine going to anyone else to get it done. Their quality of work is impeccable and they performed a 5 day job in just 3 days... They took pictures throughout the process do document the existing damage they were repairing / replacing, AND explained their quote to my insurance adjuster nearly doubling the amount that my insurance company would agree to cover (in the terms of thousands of dollars)... Thank you so much, Daniel! I'm looking forward to the next project!
Description of Work: We had severe roof damage due to an improper roof installation done roughly 5 years ago... The damage consisted of extensive water damage, mold, and ceiling damage, requiring the complete replacement of all roof materials (including plywood and treating the studs and joists for mold...

Our complete kitchen renovation was stalled after the cabinets were installed the granite countertop and all other work complete except for the back splash. Since we were expecting guests staying with us over the July 4th week, we wanted the job completed before they arrived. We had the tile and was waiting for our original contractor who informed us on Wed. June 20th, that he would not be able to install it until later in July. On Friday, June 22nd I turned to Angies List and found Daniel at FOCALPOINT RENOVATIONS. After explaining our problem, he agreed to look at the job on Sunday morning at 9AM. On Sunday morning at exactly 9AM, Daniel arrived, gave us a very reasonable price and agreed to meet our deadline. He would start the job on Wednesday and finish up on Thursday. At 8AM on Wednesday he arrived along with a helper, prepared the area in a very professional manner, proctecting the carpet etc. and began the job. From the outset it was obvious that Daniel was a true professional at what he does, the quality of his work was exceptional. They returned the following morning and finished up the job, did a really great job of cleaning up, honored the original price as quoted and finished to our tight time schedule. Everything about this experience was as good as it gets. I would definately recommend FOCALPOINT RENOVATIONS to all.
