Our roof was fixed in early August and they told us they would start in two weeks and we would have to leave while they were doing mold remediation as it would be treated as a hazardous materials demolition. We could move back in after it was done. The back half of the house on the main level which was our daughter's bedroom, a bathroom, and our family room and the basement which included our master bedroom/bathroom, and the laundry room only needed drying out so we could live there while they were working. Two weeks came and went with no word from them. Whenever we called, we were told that it would be two more weeks. Finally, in mid- September, they started tearing out the house. They told us it would be 4 days so we moved into a hotel. We ended up staying in the hotel for 9 days while they tore everything out, down to the studs, ceiling, and floor joists. We were told it would be a few weeks before they would start re-building and to go pick out our kitchen cabinets, fixtures, etc, which we did. Again, weeks went by with no word from them. We would call and get the run-around or no one would call us back. They finally started rebuilding in February -- and finished in late May which means that we went over 9 months without a kitchen and there were 5 of us living in two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a living room. I had a coffee pot in the bathroom and an electric skillet and microwave in the living room and I washed dishes in the tub. During the remodeling, we kept finding items that were not included in the estimate and so were not paid for by the insurance company. One example was the hood over the stove. We specifically talked about it with the estimator and he said it had water running thru it so it had to be replaced but then when we went to put it in, they said it wasn't on the estimate so we had to buy it ourselves, which we did. Also, the estimate for the counters had no costs for sealing. They put the counters in and left a tiny gap between the wall and the counter. They said that wasn't on the estimate and so we would have to pay for that too. When they put in the dishwasher, they told the contractor the cost didn't include any pipes or fixtures under the sink. That wasn't in the quote so it was our cost. We fought on this one and said that it was their mistake and we weren't going to pay for any other missing items. They claimed all these items were missed by us on our review of the estimate and so not their problem. We are not contractors, why would we think of the sealing between the wall and the countertops or the pipes under the sink? That is what they were paid to do, come up with an estimate to put our house back together. We had lots of change orders due to us doing some of the work ourselves to help offset the cost of our portion of the bill. We told them this in the beginning but everytime we told them the parts that we were doing, they misunderstood or confused the issue. Change orders were incomplete or not followed through on. Phone calls were hardly ever returned and emails were ignored. Our house was 3 hours from their location but they didn't like having to come so far so they hired other (cheap) contractors to do the work. The drywallers were horrible, and left cracks and uneven sections. The painters were wonderful and tried to help fix the drywallers problems. The flooring contractor left the floors uneven and damaged some of the completed walls. When we complained, we were told that it was our problem as the house was too old to fix properly and it was too expensive to send someone out to fix the problems. At the end, they told us they wouldn't come back to fix what was not done as we were too far away and that they would write off the final $500 dollars we owed them in exchange for not completing the last few things.
Description of Work: We had water damage after a winter storm took off part of our roof. During the storm we had waterfalls down every wall in the house and hail had pounded holes into the roof. The storm happened in June but we were not able to get a roofer to replace the roof until early August due to the large number of roofs that were damaged in the area. During this time, we continued to have water run into the house during every rain in that very wet spring and then mold got into the walls. We hired Paul Davis on the recomendation of our insurance company to gut the front half of the house down the the studs; including the ceiling and floor. They then performed mold remediation and put the house back together. This included rooms on two levels; the main level included the kitchen, dining room, and living room while the upstairs included the staircase, a rec room, 1 full bedroom, and part of another bedroom, plus part of a bathroom.
