Shopping for an HVAC systems was harder than it should have been. There are so many providers that offer too many options and many times I felt like people were quoting me what they wanted me to buy rather than what I needed for my house. There also isn't a lot of reliable info on which systems are better on the Internet. I gather some of it comes down to quality of installation. So, I actually ended up getting quotes from 6 companies, most off of Angie's list but also included Home Depot and Costco. I saw prices for Lennox, Trane, Carrier and Rheem. All were between $8000-11,000 depending on Seer and models. I figure that this competitive market keeps prices in check and it'll come down to who you would like to work with and which model you think is best for your house when you buy. To be clear, the unit priced at $11k was a higher end model than the one I got at $9k. So, it was not apples to apples to base the decision on price alone. I chose a single stage compressor with variable speed air handler. Didn't think it was necessary to spend more for a two stage compressor. Newcomb was the last one I contacted because I saw their van on the way to work and had remembered a neighbor had used them once for a new system - not to mention that I couldn't seem to make up my mind on the others that had quoted. They had good reviews on Angie's List and Jeff was very responsive, matter of fact and made it easy. I don't know that he said anything that I hadn't heard from the other 5 people, but he sent me his load calculation and price in a timely manner, described the work, helped us improve comfort in a couple rooms and was responsive to questions and follow up on final adjustments. Michael did great work. Install is very clean and professional looking. He made the old system install look like a weekend patch job by a avg homeowner. Also, he was very polite and respectful. We had a couple snafu's with scope of work communication between sales and service. One was a carrier issue (didn't include the filter cabinet) and another was missing instruction to replace two flex pipes. Neither were concerns and both were addressed without hesitation. It took a few weeks to get the two flex lines replaced, but it was dead of summer and the unit was working perfectly in the meantime. Still waiting on the rebate forms; but now that I'm paid up, I'll hopefully see them shortly. I am satisfied with my decision to go with Newcomb.

Our original 12 yr. old unit crashed about 5/12 when we had a couple days of 90F and more heat. Newcomb company brought out window air conditioners for us. They worked up estmates for both repair and total replacement. They put no pressure on us to buy the total, but many of our neighbors with the same equipment have had continuing problems. So we opted for total replacement. We were also leaving on vacation, so they discussed the situation with other customers who were in no rush to have their work done and were able to get the job done before we leftThey were very courteous and professiona l.

We woke up on a Saturday to have cold air blowing from our furnace vents. We checked recommended vendors on Angie's list , one we had used in the past, and one our son used , the latter of which was also on Angie's list. The one we had used before never called us back, the one which highly recommended on Angie's list did call back but could not come out until late evening and then we heard back from Newcomb's dispatcher quickly after we had contacted them and she indicated they would put us on the list but if we were on a service contract with them our wait would be shorter. We investigated what the service contract entailed and agreed to go this route. We are super pleased with every aspect of this company and feel they should be the highest rated heating and cooling company on Angie's list. They have been an established company in the Raleigh/Durham are for a long time and, on Saturday when we called and they became very busy because of the stretch of cold weather here, they called in extra repair personnel so they could complete all the service calls quicker. A very nice man named Chris came at 4 PM and quickly deduced the problem as he had seen it already that day. We had a frozen drain pipe going from our furnace which was the result of the unusual cold spell. He put in a temporary drain hose connected to the drain where our washer was and scheduled us for a return repair visit when the pipe thawed. By entering into an annual $741.00 service contact which includes an annual spring and summer check-up but also resulted in no charge for the return visit during which 2 employees were here over an hour repairing the burst pipe, removing the temporary drain, and checking that the repair was working correctly. The original charge was $274.00 which included the annual service contract. All the repairmen were courteous , helpful, knowledgable, friendly, considerate, and we can't speak more highly of this company. On second thought, don't put them at the top of the list - we don't want them getting too busy.

They were here on time and were very prompt. Their pricing is way better than what I used to get. The first time I had them out, it was the owner but on subsequent visits, it has been regular techs. A visit usually takes 2 hrs. I've already recommended them to several others. They're always clean - they never track up the house. They also promptly ID'd themselves when they arrived.
Description of Work: We have an annual contract with them - they come out twice a year, setting up the A/C before the summer hits and setting up the furnace in the fall.

The provider sent a representative to my home to review options for replacement of my old Apollo heating system. This system was not performing well. They discussed options, discount and tax rebates with me. After the visit they provide a written estimate of 3 options depending on the level of efficiency that I desired. The written offer included a form to return picking the desired option which I returned by email. The equipment was order and when they had notification of its delivery schedule, they created an appointment for installation. The worker arrived on-time and removed the old system and made the new installation the same day. The inspection was the next day. I was happy with the professionalism of the staff and quality of the work. I did choose to purchase the extended warranty. The new system significantly decreased dust in the house and well as providing superior comfort. The new programmable thermostat was easy to understand and they trained me on it as part of the installation.

The worst company ever! Technicians are extremely incompetent and rude. We have been complaining for years about inadequate heating and cooling in our office park. For years, NewCombe would come twice a year to do the maintenance and they would find nothing wrong. Finally, I called a different HVAC company for independent third opinion and they found the problem in 30 seconds: ducts were not even attached, so all these years we have been heating and cooling attic, not the living space!! Because NewComb has a contract, they came back to fix the ducts and technician accused the other company pulling the ducts to mess things up! Unbelievable! I fired NewComb doing any HVAC work for my house few years back because of their technical incompetence and I plan to do the same for my other locations. Unprofessionalism that technicians display is galling and insulting to the customer.

Jeremy came to our home and provided an estimate for a total system replacement with Carrier equipment for the first level of our residence. The quote was in line with the company we had been using to service our HVAC units (upstairs and down) which surprised me, as I felt that our "incumbent" would give us the best quote. The incumbent had previously replace the A/C unit on the downstairs system, and when it failed after just 6 years use, I felt like they would (or should) offer a discount on the replacement unit. I went to Newcomb on the recommendation of a neighbor, but really was only doing so for a second opinion. After receiving the quote from Newcomb, I went back to the incumbent, but they would not budge on their price. I talked to Jeremy about the situation and although he was unable to come down in price, he did include a full year contract on both the new (downstairs) unit as well as the aged (20 years) unit (upstairs). Newcomb did a fantastic job on the installation of the new unit, and they were very thorough in their clean up during the work. They arrived when they said they would, completed the job when they said they would, and we have had great success with the new unit, with much lower power bills. Let's face it, nobody wants to spend the better part of $10K on something that nobody ever sees. But if you have to do it, like we did, you can count on Jeremy and the team at Newcomb to do it right the first time. When the upstairs unit blows, and it will blow sooner than later, we will go right back to Newcomb for our replacement.

The technician arrived on schedule and went right to work. The checkup covered two units and went well. The tech communicated his experience well. He pointed out some possible leakage around an exhaust picker where it exited through the roof. No attempts to sell me expensive filter system or additional products was a refreshing improvement over my previous service provider. I feel like our systems are in good hands with Newcombe, and have confidence that any breakdowns that may occur will be handled with speed and professionalism.

The original plan was for the work was to take 3-4 days, replacing 1 system per day so I would continue to have heat in the home. The install was in early January so this was a real concern of mine. The day before the install was scheduled to start, I received a call and they asked if they could send extra crews to my house and try to do 2 systems at once. I agreed. When they showed up promptly at 8am the next day, I was stunned at the number of people they sent. There were 8+ people working in, under, and outside my house at any time. Every single one of them from the guys hanging ducting under the house to the senior install tech who came in at the end to inspect the wiring and fire the systems up was a complete professional and very respectful of the house. They worked so quickly and efficiently it was obvious they were shooting to do all 3 systems and ducting in 1 day. I really didn't think it was possible but they did it. All 3 systems were successfully replaced and fired up, new ducting was run, and the one issue they did run into was identified and fixed, and they left late that night with the whole job completed. They laid down plastic and cardboard everywhere and were respectful of the house and not making a mess. They cleaned up after themselves and even vacuumed around the areas they did go into. Their office handled all the paperwork, assisted me with getting maximum energy credits (cash back!) from Progress Energy, and handled the Wake county inspection. When issues came up that added small costs to the job, such as cutting an access hatch and adding panel repair, they handled it within the original estimate price and did not add any costs. When an issue came up where they were unable to install a piece of equipment I had asked for due to space limitations, they removed the full cost of that equipment and install from the final bill. I could go on with all the little things they did right, as they worked for 1 very long day around a house with a family inside it including a baby, a dog, and a cat, and did their very best to make minimal disruptions to our lives. Everything was 'yes sir, no sir' and polite. I was so nervous about such a big job and their aggressive push to get it done in 1 day but they really nailed it and I am left with the feeling they were absolutely the perfect company for the job. Review written 3 months after services performed and 0 issues have been encountered since.
Description of Work: I hired Newcomb & Co to replace 3 aging, ailing heat pump systems in a 1987 built house. Rather than continue to throw money at the old systems every year, we made the decision to replace all 3 at once with new high efficiency systems. In addition to the new systems I wanted new ducting to replace the old ducting in the crawlspace and accessible areas, and zone control systems to be installed on 2 of the 3 new systems. I contacted 6 Raleigh area HVAC providers and 4 of them provided quotes that I considered complete enough to potentially earn the business. At first quote, Newcomb was the second most expensive, but critical review showed their quote to be the most complete and utilizing the highest quality Carrier equipment, where other providers quoted lower models of equipment for nearly the same price. After follow up calls and change requests, they were able to adjust their estimated price and were now offering a competitive price with better equipment. Reviews on Angieslist and a check with the BBB allowed me to select them to do the work.

Mike Cox came out and worked up the quote for me. He was very responsive, both to phone calls and email, and I never felt like I was getting a sales pitch. I asked a lot of questions and his answers were straight and supported by the other research I was doing. The job included repositioning some duct work. That was missed during the installation, it just didn't get included on the work order. They were quick to correct that but it did mean they had to send someone out again and they arrive later than I expected. That is the only reason I didn't rate them all A's. I am happy with their service and I will use them again.

Things started out will with Newcomb but did not end well at all. The estimator, Reggie, was very punctual. I am an educated customer and understand the exact needs of what I want put in my home. The first estimate I received from Newcomb was several thousand dollars higher than any other company in the area. When I communicated this back to the company and indicated I wanted a different brand of equipment, Reggie got verbally hostile in his email communications and said he would not have anything to do with me any more and that his company knew what they were doing and did lots of research. He was offended that I questioned him. I indicated I was just trying to have a professional conversation about my needs. No other contractor has treated me this way. When I asked why the recommended brand of heat pump air handler had an optional tin plated copper coil, he could not answer the question and never did. I did my own research and it is because most of the HVAC brands have had leaking evaporator coils the last few years due to what this brand said was indoor air contaminates. Most brands switched to all aluminum coils and warranty them for 10 years. The brand Newcomb pushes was only giving a 5 year warranty on the coils unless you pay for the upgraded tin plated copper coil which carries a 10 year warranty. I feel the dealer should be able to tell me this information. I had to research the answers on my own. What I disdain is a company who gets offended and even angry when I ask questions. As a Masters Degree educated person, I know how to do research and dig for answers. If a company cannot answer questions and gets offended by someone asking them politely, then I feel that they are not being honest. This purchase is about MY NEEDS, not the needs of the company. There are many other HVAC companies in the Raleigh Durham greater triangle area that do not get offended when you ask questions. Apparently this estimator and company is not one of them. I will not be using them nor would I recommend them after this unprofessional behavior.

I've used Newcomb for years - they installed my last A/C-heat pump and have serviced it 2x per year under a maintenance contract. I've always liked their professionalism, but they went above & beyond when my unit died in the middle of last month's heat wave. They came out within an hour of my calling them, tried for 2 hours to fix the unit (unsuccessfully), and brought me a window air conditioner to use until they could get a new unit installed for me. The crew that installed the new unit volunteered to work overtime--in the heat-- to get it done too. I've gone from kinda liking Newcomb & Co to being a big fan!

We called on Monday (9-July-12) morning. The unit had quit working on Sunday evening. They said they would try to get to us by late Monday or definitely by Tuesday. They got here about 5pm on Tues. They were slowed down due to difficulty with thunderstorms in area. Considering the the problems with the extreme heat we are having, I thought this was pretty good service. The other repair service (original installer) we called early Monday morning could not get to us before Thursday. We signed up for service agreement with them. The $285.00 is cost of service agreement for a year and included the discounted cost of the part replaced. Courteous technician. Explained what he was doing and why. I did not rate the price since it was not just for a repair. Not sure how to compare.

Our AC was no longer blowing cold air, but was still blowing air. We were able to call and get them to come out the same day. They called and gave me 30 minutes warning so I could get home in time to meet them. They came on time. They were able to solve the issue with our AC (a blown capacitor) in around 30 minutes. We have had really high temperatures lately and we were grateful they not only were able to come out the same day, but fix the issue quickly and not have it cost an arm and a leg.
